Happily keeping rapists and murderers out of jail, Milton's firm also has ties to the arms trade and chemical weapons around the globe to spite his father God. Ultimately seeking to bring about the apocalypse, Milton fathers many children with unknowing women, intending for the "best" ones to breed together and give birth to TheAntichrist. When protagonist lawyer Kevin Lomax proves his most promising yet, Milton focuses on [[TheCorrupter corrupting him]], going behind Kevin's back to rape and mutilate the latter's beloved wife Mary Ann, eventually driving her insane and to suicide. When Kevin confronts Milton, he boastfully admits to his crimes before trying to have Kevin sleep with his demonic half-sister Christabella, burning her to death in a rage when Kevin shoots himself to defy Milton's plans.

* CompleteMonster: [[MeaningfulName John Milton]] (aka {{Satan}}) runs an OccultLawFirm staffed by his demons and humans he corrupted. He exploits the legal system to get as many violent criminals off the hook and spread corruption everywhere in the world, hoping that the Earth will become such a perversion that it will hurt Heaven and spite God. Having to work around the free will of humans, [[TheCorrupter he subtly manipulates them to give in to evil instead]]. He seduces multiple women over the years so he can find offspring good enough to mate with each other and further produce TheAntichrist. He drives [[spoiler:Kevin's wife Mary Ann]] to [[DrivenToMadness madness]] and [[DrivenToSuicide suicide]], and rapes her for half a day, leaving her with scratch and bite marks all over her body. He later taunts his son Kevin with this crime in an especially vile PostRapeTaunt. He brutally kills anyone within his company who tries to expose his corruption. When Kevin destroys his plan by killing himself, he [[OffingTheOffspring kills his daughter]] to vent his anger by turning her into a [[CruelAndUnusualDeath withered husk]].

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Music/TheRollingStones' "Paint It Black," played over the closing credits while ImpressivePyrotechnics light up the screen.

* AwesomeDearBoy: Creator/AlPacino was on-board to play Milton from the word go, with the director and screenwriters actively adapting and reworking the script to ''add lines'' for him to say at Pacino's suggestion (contrary to popular belief, Pacino [[ThrowItIn didn't ad-lib his monologues]], but he ''did'' make suggestions for their content and only really asked for one big speech at the end... to which Hackford responded by giving Pacino all the monologues he felt the script could support).
** For his part, Creator/KeanuReeves signed on for the project mainly for the chance to work with Pacino.

* JustForFun/XMeetsY: One of the most clearcut examples you will ever see. It's Film/TheFirm meets Film/RosemarysBaby. Kevin spends the movie living the plot of the former, and Mary Anne the latter.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: The idea that even the guilty should be competently defended? That's the ''Devil's work''. Criminal defense attorneys should only defend the innocent.
** On the other hand, one could say the Aesop is that competent legal defense shouldn't be [[SlobsVersusSnobs dependent on one's station]]. Milton's law firm is ridiculously expensive, so the only people who could possibly afford them are the richest of the rich - meaning the rest of society loses by default. After all, Milton's methods are ''entirely legal'' - see [[Analysis/AmoralAttorney Analysis / Amoral Attorney]].
