** Which leads to the flip-side idea that some politically-minded people on the Left seem to have that the movie portrays the Occupy Wall Street are a bunch of violent lunatics trying to tear down Western civilization, or that the film is "Batman vs. the evil poor people". The trailers are more guilty of these UnfortunateImplications than the actual movie though, since most of the violence is committed either by Bane's mercenaries (sometimes posing as menial workers) or the convicted criminals busted out of prison, not by any poor or ordinary people (who are seen mostly shutting themselves in their homes while this insanity is going on, and thankful to finally be able to come out once it's over with.) And there are one or two {{Corrupt Corporate Executive}}s thrown in for good measure. Though there is a brief mention of Bane recruiting the disenfranchised and the poor, it's difficult to identify specific examples from his army of mooks.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: The film received a PG-13 rating in the US and a 12A in the United Kingdom, not to mention an M (suitable for 15 years and over) in Australia, owing to its brutal violence and dark themes - [[WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic you know, for kids!]] However, that didn't stop Mattel making a ''The Dark Knight Rises'' toy line.

Talia and Bane decapitate the city's leadership, stir up class warfare, and steal a fusion bomb so they can blackmail the U.S. government into giving them full control over Gotham, while having Bruce locked away in their former prison so he can be witness to Gotham's destruction. Their reign of terror lasts months, despite knowing full well that the bomb will eventually explode anyway, and when Batman returns to stop them, they only pause to rub their impending victory into his face and the extent to which they drew out their vengeance and deceived him.]]

* HeartwarmingInHindsight:
** Batman telling Gordon that anyone can be a hero, even someone doing something as simple as [[spoiler:putting a coat around a boy's arms and assuring him that it's not the end of the world]], became even more heartwarming after the tragic Colorado shootings, where Creator/ChristianBale himself went to visit the victims unannounced, on his own money and time.
** [[spoiler:In ''Film/BatmanBegins'', Ra's Al Ghul tells Bruce to pick out a rare blue flower as part of his quest to find what he was looking for in the first place. At the end of this film when Alfred sees Bruce with Selina in Italy, Selina is wearing a blue dress.]]

** More than one person has noted the similarity between the climax of this film and [[spoiler:Batman's troubles with disposing of a bomb]] in ''Film/BatmanTheMovie''. Both sequences even [[spoiler:ends with Batman appearing to get blown up only to appear unharmed later]].
** Bane's previous, much-criticised, appearance in a Batman film was in ''Film/BatmanAndRobin''. One reason fans complained was because [[spoiler:he was not a villain in his own right as in the comics, but was reduced to just been the mook of a female villain]]. At the end of this film, we find out he was [[spoiler: working with another female villain, though the film does not establish who is working for whom, or if they are a BigBadDuumvirate]].
** On a similar note, there's Selina Kyle. Like Bane, Catwoman's [[Film/Catwoman2004 previous film appearance]] was widely hated, in part because the lead, despite using the name "Comicbook/{{Catwoman}}", had little to do with the original character. Now, as noted under EnsembleDarkhorse above, Selina's character is widely praised for capturing the character's essence perfectly... but she never uses the name "Catwoman".
** In the beginning of the movie, Selina manages to steal Bruce's car by claiming she's his wife. [[spoiler: Ultimately, she's the one Bruce ends up with.]]
** A few years before ''The Dark Knight Rises'', Anne Hathaway was rumored to have been cast as the main villains in the unmade ''Spider-Man 4''. The villain in question? ''ComicBook/BlackCat'', a character who has a reputation for being a total rip-off of Catwoman.

* VocalMinority: While certainly not ''perfect'', the movie managed to score a Website/RottenTomatoes rating of 87% ("Certified Fresh") with an even higher Audience Rating of ''90%'', along with a respectable 78% on Metacritic, and an Website/{{iMDB}} user rating of 8.4--giving it a high-ranking spot on the site's Top 250 list. It also made over a billion at the box office. So then why might some people get the impression that audiences hated it? It helps that its detractors include Creator/DougWalker, the writers of WebVideo/ScreenJunkies' WebVideo/HonestTrailers, and several writers for ''Website/{{Cracked}}'', who take every opportunity to bash it whenever they bring it up.

** Bane has quite a number of similarities to a guy named [[Film/StarTrekNemesis Shinzon]] from another franchise.

* HesJustHiding:
** [[spoiler:What a good deal of people believe about Talia, as her death scene was rather unclear if she died from her injuries or just passed out, and people have survived much worse in these films before (the Joker, for instance, lives through his truck getting ''flipped over''.)]]
** [[spoiler:Some people also wonder if Bane really died or if he was just so damn powerful that he could live through Selina's missile attack.]]
** Because of the fact that we [[NeverFoundTheBody never saw a corpse]], and due to his [[MemeticBadass status as]] [[EnsembleDarkhorse "true" hero]] [[MemeticMutation of the movie]], some fans insist that CIA managed to survive the plane crash, and that there ''was'' a survivor. A particularly humorous argument for this comes from youtube commenter [=DSFARGEG00=].
---> CIA is asked why he would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane. Bane believes the throwing would be enough to kill someone and assumes CIA is lying. The truth, though, is that CIA does that because he thinks it's routine. Why would he think it's routine? Because CIA can survive a fall from that distance, so he thinks anyone could. CIA didn't die in the plane crash.

** Also, there are fans not too pleased with the fact that there is no reference made at all to the Joker, the antagonist of the previous film. Nolan and co said this was done out of respect to the late Heath Ledger, but most fans and even some casual members of the general audience came away feeling that it was odd or even disrespectful to Ledger after he gave such a dynamic and mesmerizing performance (others are just angry Joker fans feeling sour grapes that he couldn't be in the film for obvious reasons) to a character that was rather important to the plot.

* CantUnhearIt:
** Anne Hathaway ''is'' Selina Kyle. There’s no other way to say it.

* AlternativeJokeInterpretation: Not a joke, but a boast in this case. When a CIA agent asks what will happen if he pulls Bane's mask off, Bane replies: "It would be extremely painful." The agent then tells Bane "You're a big guy", to which Bane replies "For you". Many viewers were confused as to whether Bane meant "It would be extremely painful for you" or "I'm a big guy for you".
