Added DiffLines:

* GatewaySeries: The show was one of the more popular anime shown on Syfy's Ani-Monday block back in 2008 and, along with ''Evangelion'' and ''Anime/CodeGeass'', it helped introduce many fans to the mecha genre.

* FreudWasRight: All those 'drills' 'penetrating' things, the shape of the good guys' airship, as well as the only female Gunmen having a [[VaginaDentata fanged talking crotch]].

** Real men [[FreudWasRight fire each other up, unite, and make comments about each other's drills.]].

Added DiffLines:

* CounterpartComparison: With ''Anime/GaoGaiGar''. For several reasons:
** The main power of the heroes (G-Stone/Spiral Energy) is powered by their hot blooded courage.
** The villain for the first half of each story has four generals.
** Two of the generals from each series are close friends. Thymilph/Adiane, Polonaise/Primada.
** After the DiscOneFinalBoss is defeated, new enemies from space appears.
** One of the villains from both series started as TheRival to the hero, after the first half, they perform a HeelFaceTurn and become one of the good guys.

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The show never made that big of an impact in Japan, where its big brother, ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', holds massive ubiquity. In America, where ''Evangelion'' doesn't hold as much influence as in its home country (even if it still remains a well-remembered classic in the anime community), ''Gurren Lagann'' has had much more success critically and commercially, and it's more debatable which of the two mecha anime is more popular and well-remembered.

* SpiritualAntithesis: This is essentially Studio Gainax's way of refuting everything they said in ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion''. This extends to the characters, where Simon and Yoko fulfill superficially similar roles to Shinji and Asuka, respectively (all members of their respective series' main {{Power Trio}}s) but develop in the opposite direction.

* UnfortunateImplications: Yoko is ''insanely'' sexualised despite being a fourteen-year-old. (Given that Asuka & Rei, two fourteen-year-olds, are heavily sexualised - more so in the merchandise than in the show - in ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', and the creepy sexual content involving Naota and Eri in ''Anime/{{FLCL}}'', who are ''twelve'', Creator/StudioGainax's track record in this regard is questionable.)

* MemeticLoser: Simon. While early-series Simon is trying to find his footing and hence is not as CrazyAwesome as Kamina, late in the series he surpasses his "Aniki" in spades and Kamina himself acknowledges it (if posthumously). Alas, the meme guys [[IncrediblyLamePun didn't get the memo]] and Simon pretty much remains a useless whiny little bitch in their eyes, and if they do acknowledge his late-show achievements, they get rather schizophrenic about it: Simon's not one guy who outgrew his problems and faced his fears and became a {{Badass}}--it's more like there's two men called 'Simon', one who is a whiny little bitch and one who is pure high-octane GAR with no in-betweens.
