Despite their cool design and some subtle yet tantalizing implications about their nature, they have no involvement in the plot at all; one can play through the game without ever even encountering them. This feels like a huge missed opportunity. It also extends to their territory at large - over a dozen planets hidden in the galaxy's deadliest region, with absolutely nothing on them.
