It's a myth that using nuclear weapons against Japan was to save lives. That particular interpretation was fabricated out of whole cloth after the war ended.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: [=MacDuff=] is the villain of the episode, but we don't get any information about his background. For all we know, he was honest in his belief that destroying the Lysian base would save lives on both sides of the conflict, much like how the United States justified dropping nuclear weapons as an alternative to an extended invasion. We also don't know whether he was acting as an agent of his government or if he was some lone inventor taking matters into his own hands with his own technology.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: We learn almost as little about the Satarrans as we do about the Lysians, but if their [[PlanetOfHats hat]] is GettingSmiliesPaintedOnYourSoul or something similar they might well have effective cross-species memory-wiping capability but be only barely warp-capable with no significant offensive capacity. Their memory-wiping weapon grants an amazing force multiplier to one man in one shuttle.

Not really a reveal, since the red shirt is given a rank that we know is occupied by someone else. If he'd just been a random ensign, it could have been treated as a reveal.

* CaptainObviousReveal: It should not come as any surprise that a RedShirt who had never appeared before and was suddenly and inexplicably listed as First Officer instead of Riker is in some way connected to what's happened to the crew.

I removed the “what an idiot” example. There were a whole bunch of justifying edits and debate. Not only is this not ideal for a trope page, it calls in to question the relevance of the trope if a lot of people doubt the behaviour actually is stupid. If most people would look at the character’s actions and think, “what an idiot” then the trope clearly applies. If one person looks at their actions and thinks, “that’s a dumb thing to do” while another thinks “no, it’s not, that’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do if you actually think about it” then it becomes more ambiguous.

** [=MacDuff's=] plan is never fully revealed; he may have intended to get the ship destroyed and frame his enemies, or may have simply not understood the magnitude of his mistake until it was do or die.
** We also don't know for certain if [=MacDuff=] was officially sanctioned by his people or even if the technology he used was typical of the Satarrans; for all we know, he could be an impulsive patriotic bounty hunter who stumbled on the mind-wiping technology by chance and seized the opportunity to 'save' his people.
** In terms of [=MacDuff=] framing someone else after the fact, how would the Federation ever know what species was to blame in the first place? Even when [=MacDuff=]'s disguise was blown, the ''Enterprise'' crew weren't able to identify his species without the help of the Lysians that he was going to destroy.
*** Seems pretty straightforward. A Galaxy Class starship committing such a blatant and seemingly random violation of the prime directive would lead to a thorough investigation. The Lysians would have no choice (knowing that they are utterly outgunned) but to reluctantly agree to believe the Federation and collaborate with the inquiry, and eventually the fact that their Satarran foes possess a weapon capable of pulling such a stunt would emerge.
*** MacDuff had both the ability to wipe the minds of everyone on board the Enterprise and alter their computers. He could've simply wiped their memories like he did, convinced them to waste the Lysians, then just wiped their minds again and any record of the no doubt extremely brief Federation/Lysian war from the computers and sent them on their way none the wiser. The real problem is how utterly the Enterprise crushed the Lysian ship they encountered and thus quickly realized just how improbable the whole scenario they were being fed was.
