By endgame, physical attackers can do much more damage compared to the time it takes for mages' spells to take effect (especially in 1 and 2 where spells completely stopped the flow of battle) while also having better defensive stats and movement speed. Mages specializing in healing tend to have it better, however, since physical attackers by themselves typically don't have access to reliable healing.
