* AdaptationDisplacement: Not a lot of people know the novella the movie is based on, much less that [[CreatorsOddball it was written by]] Creator/StephenKing. Even more unfortunately, though popular, it had largely faded from public awareness by the time [[Film/TheShawshankRedemption another movie]] from the same book, ''Different Seasons'' (a collection of four novellas) had debuted. What's more is that both movies downplayed that they were based on Stephen King works, so the audience wouldn't mistake them for horror films.

* CrossesTheLineTwice: Lots of people puking is normally gross, but Lard Ass Hogan sequence goes so over the top with the vomiting it loops back around from being disgusting into hilarity.

** In the book, Gordie mentions a trip to NYC in the late 1970s/early 1980s. He mentions touring the Empire State Building, and says "Fuck the World Trade Center, the building King Kong climbed will always be the tallest to me." Fast forward two decades...

** Seeing as it's a StoryWithinAStory, and it's [[FridgeBrilliance not exactly a realistic story,]] it still works.

* HilariousInHindsight
** Creator/RobReiner directs this film which depicts the always-troubling image of children smoking, as it appeared in the book and is (unfortunately) historically accurate. Reiner would eventually become one of the biggest anti-smoking advocates in America, enough to be parodied for it on ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark''.
** During the campfire scene, Gordie says "''Series/WagonTrain'' is a cool show and all, but they never get anywhere. They just keep...[[ShapedLikeItself wagon-training]]." The next year Creator/WilWheaton would, of course, become a cast member on ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration''. ''Franchise/StarTrek'' was described (and pitched) by Creator/GeneRoddenberry as "WagonTrainToTheStars." In addition, Creator/JerryOConnell would voice Commander Ransom in ''WesternAnimation/StarTrekLowerDecks''.
** Gordie becomes a writer. Creator/WilWheaton would grow up to author a half dozen books himself.
** Creator/KieferSutherland looks quite [[Series/TwentyFour Jack Bauer-esque]] while winning a chicken game with a lumber truck.
** Vern mentions Franchise/{{Superman}}. Creator/JerryOConnell, would later go on to voice Superman in multiple animated films.

** Like his character, Creator/RiverPhoenix would end up dying an untimely death. At the end of the film it is said that Chris dies trying to stop a fight, while the others went on with their lives. Phoenix actually did end up dying from an overdose in 1993, while the other actors are still pursuing their careers.

** Similarly, Creator/CoreyFeldman was abused by his parents like Teddy, to the point where he would eventually become emancipated. The actor had anger issues like Teddy, accordingly; and he would later have his own legal issues due to his drug addiction.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Much of the movie's soundtrack, but especially the titular theme song "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTCfQ6Bb8QE Stand by Me]]" by Music/BenEKing.
