* FranchiseOriginalSin: Everything that made the second film so reviled had its roots in this film in some fashion or another. This one had just enough redeeming qualities to avoid being completely awful, while the sequel removes those qualities almost entirely.

* AngstWhatAngst: In Zartog Strikes Back, Titan isn't concerned at all when he reports to the group that Zartog has returned and just vaporised the Senator. He even claims it's hilarious.
* FanonDiscontinuity: The original may not be anything special, but even its fans wish that the sequel never came to be.
* FirstInstallmentWins: Compared to the sequel, it has a higher quality voice cast and storyline.

* IdiotPlot: Just about everything regarding the conflict of Zartog Strikes Back revolves around this.
** The new model of the space ship is entirely voice activated, meaning that Rocket casually saying "light this candle" prompts it to immediately take off, not allowing Rocket to abort the order or even asking him for confirmation. The computer rejects his attempt to abort the take-off due to him not having clearance or the password, but for some reason didn't ask for these things when he accidentally told it to take off in the first place.
** Despite having years of experience working at mission control, Houston's old age demands that he doesn't know how to work a computer, meaning he can't communicate with Rocket after the latter takes off.
** The first film clearly indicates that Titan is merely buying time for himself, Troll and intentionally tormenting Zartog, when "helping" the latter to master the Rover. The sequel seems to have completely forgetten this aspect of their previous interactions, with Titan greeting Zartog like an old friend and casually giving him access to classified information.
** Hamm uses an old magic trick from the circus to take the de-particlizer from Zartog. Instead of giving it back to the scientists or Luna, Hamm decides to overdo his theatrics and keeps the trick going, to the point where the de-particlizer somehow ends up back in Zartog's hand.

* Narm: The second film's MacGuffin, the "de-particlizer", is an incredibly advanced and dangerous weapon capable of vaporising its victims. And it looks exactly like a Wii remote.
* Sequelitis: The sequel pretty much cranked up the first film's faults while doing away with its redeeming points.
* SoOkayItsAverage:
** The first film is considered mediocre by those who don't hate it; there are certainly worse films out there, but a lot of better movies were being released even at the time. The CGI in the first movie isn't honestly "bad" per se, but there's a noticeably MinimalistCast when it comes to the humans and the design of Zartog's race is pretty bland. To put things in perspective, consider that the film came out in 2008, one month after audiences were given WesternAnimation/WallE, and just compare those two.It's also worth pointing out that WALL•E had a much higher budget than this little indie film ($180,000,000 as opposed to the chimps' $40,000,000)
** The second movie, given its straight to DVD status, plays this much more straight. It is also something of an OldShame to the animation company behind that film. Up to, and including, not even mentioning it on their own website.

That's not fridgey.

* FridgeHorror: They need a nose cone for their spaceship for re-entry. [[spoiler:So they use the frozen, but still blinking, Zartog. Though he arguably deserved it.]]
