* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Many have assumed Amara may potentially be on the Autism spectrum - Given [[TheNineties the time this story takes place]], Amara being on the spectrum and being undiagnosed is ''completely'' understandable.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Amara. At the end we're supposed to sympathize with her, but after how rude she was to both Raina and everyone else, it's hard to take her seriously.

* ValuesDissonance: The fact that Raina and Amara were left alone ''in the desert'' on the side of the road would earn way ''way'' more than a simple MyGodWhatHaveIDone, along with the fact that their mother and Will literally ''hitchhiked''.

What An Idiot is now Flamebait

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** Amara herself. At the end we're supposed to sympathize with her, but after how rude she was to both Raina and everyone else, it's hard to take her seriously.
* WhatAnIdiot:
** The minivan breaks down in the desert. Because cell phones won't be invented for about 15 years, Sue decides to hitchhike to find some service workers.
*** '''You'd Expect:''' Her to take all three of her children with them. While it's likely that someone will break into the car, at least then Raina and Amara [[FridgeHorror won't be assaulted or robbed as well.]]
*** '''Instead:''' The girls' mother ''leaves the girls ALONE'' on the side of the road. [[DeliberateValuesDissonance This may have been in]] TheNineties [[DeliberateValuesDissonance and thus what was acceptable then won't be now]], but the girls could have suffered heat stroke.
** Another part was Raina excited to see her cousin Lindsay. She haven’t seen her since Raina was a little girl.
*** '''You’d Expect:''' Raina to know that since Lindsay is older, she's changed and doesn’t remember much about her and the things they did.
*** '''Instead:''' Raina honestly believes that Lindsay would remember her and be exactly the same when they were little kids. While Lindsay is thankfully friendly, she's fairly aloof and Raina wastes time trying to be her friend instead of embracing the sister she already has.

Splitting as series is no longer a duology

Added DiffLines:

* CrossesTheLineTwice: The chapter where the Telgemeiers' pets keep dying goes from funny to dark to gut-bustingly hilarious.
* EvenBetterSequel: Generally considered to be an improvement over ''Smile'' due to even prettier artwork and a more dramatic, heavy story. A more ambiguous and less {{Anvilicious}} ending is also a welcome improvement.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** Amara herself. At the end we're supposed to sympathize with her, but after how rude she was to both Raina and everyone else, it's hard to take her seriously.
