* FirstInstallmentWins[=/=]{{Sequelitis}}: ''The Chronicles of Riddick'' was not very well received by critics or many fans of ''Pitch Black''.

*** More the Disney-fication compared to the original. Which was more for the PG-13 rating instead of the shift.

* HumanoidAbomination: The Lord Marshal of the Necromongers, perchance?

* InvincibleHero: This trope is only present in ''The Chronicles of Riddick''. Riddick is practically omniscient in his plans, is never even touched in battle, and is never in any sort of danger until the BigBad fights him. This has been one of the criticisms of the movie. Every other entry in the series depict Riddick as more human and killable: ''Pitch Black'', the animated movie, the videogames, even a little flash short created for the ''Pitch Black'' website.

* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: Masterfully averted; ''Butcher Bay'' is in fact regarded as one of the finest games to come up at the time and many went as far as saying that it was better than the movie it was supposed to tie in. ''Dark Athena'', while not as great, isn't half bad either.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: Riddick and Fry, the kind that overlaps with FoeYay, and [[YourMileageMayVary arguably]], Riddick and Kyra.

** [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] as the role was designed ''specifically for her'' by Vin Diesel and David Twohy. WordOfGod on either the DVD commentary or the "extras" subtitle track.

* MoralEventHorizon: Johns has two in ''Pitch Black''. The first is when he steals the morfine from the crashes spaceship, so Fry's friend has to die in screaming agony. The second is when he suggests he and Riddick kill Jack and use her as bait for the creatures.

* TearJerker: In ''PitchBlack'', [[spoiler: Riddick crying over Carolyn's HeroicSacrifice, yelling, "Not for ''me! '' Not for ''ME! ''" Carolyn had told him earlier that she would die for any of her charges. Riddick, who in ''Pitch Black '' hated ''himself,'' was shocked and dismayed that she meant him, too.]]
** Even more so. [[spoiler: Seconds before being taken, Carolyn says "I said I'd die for them, not you! Let's move!" Obviously meant to motivate him. The look on her face in the moment says it all.]]
** It hits twice as hard after [[spoiler: Jack asks him what they should say when they get picked up and he tells her to say that Riddick died back on that planet. It's a bit of FridgeBrilliance when you realize that he means Carolyn represented the last of his humanity and that part of him died with her.]]
*** Well, actually, if you [[FanonDiscontinuity don't take "Chronicles of Riddick" into account]], it can also be seen as [[spoiler: him saying that the Riddick that everyone knew before (the killer) was what died on the planet, and he has changed.]]
** Seeing Imam's grief as [[spoiler: his innocent young students get themselves eaten alive]] can be this, too.

* FetishFuel: Riddick; big, well-built guy with a baritone who really, really likes knives. Kyra; female Riddick-lite. Let's not even start on the Necromongers'...[[IfYouKnowWhatIMean interesting]] views on pain.
** And Riddick's tendency to get tied up in ways reminiscent of bondage (...and escape).
** That entire scene between Lyn and Riddick when he corners her in the ship's pilot bay, speaking softly and yet threateningly right into her ear while staying just out of touching range.
** Dame Vaako's slinky manner and really, ''really'' tight dresses. Those must've been painted onto Thandie Newton.

** The odd part is, in ''Pitch Black'', it's revealed that his night vision makes his eyes sensitive to light so he [[TheGogglesDoSomething needs the goggles]]. In the sequel, this weakness is apparently gone since he whips them off every other scene, including one in which he gazes as explosions.

** When Jack asks him to to get eyes like his and he gives her his disturbing little story, Carolyn makes [[spoiler: her]] go back up to the planet's surface. Riddick glances at Carolyn with a smile and says, "Cute kid." The look on Carolyn's face is priceless.

*** I always thought Riddick [[spoiler: let her be taken when he was told he was still considered expendable after everything he had done for the group. He would've been able to see the bug behind her.]]

** That entire scene between Lyn and Riddick when he corners her in the ship's pilot bay, speaking softly and yet threateningly right into her ear while staying just out of touching range...yeah, [[{{Firefly}} I'll be in my bunk.]]

* CharacterAlignment: If anything, using the alignment system of [[DungeonsAndDragons the game that the actor is a fan of]], everyone seems to think of him as ChaoticEvil. In actuality, he seems more NeutralNeutral, with a little leaning towards ChaoticNeutral. It's not that he hates the law, he just doesn't *care* about it; similarly he'll happily kill someone, but only in self defense, or if they're in his way and pose any sort of real threat. To top it all off, he seems to have some major excuses for feeling this way: see the conversation quoted in HollywoodAtheist below.
