[[folder: Film]]
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Perhaps Sonja's sword training acted as a catharsis for her to deal with the TraumaCongaLine she suffered, since exercise in a controlled environment and the full knowledge that she would be learning the skills to prevent anyone from violating her again might have helped her power through.
* AngstWhatAngst: Sonja is extremely well adjusted for someone who was gang raped, had her entire family murdered and her village burned down. She does remind Gedren of her crimes when they're reunited and is out for revenge, but she spends most of the journey quite happy-go-lucky. You even forget that her sister dies early on.
* AudienceAlienatingPremise: With the horrifying slaughter (and [[DisposableWoman cheap disposal]]) of would-be action girls early on (and Sonja herself needing to be helped by men), it is too misogynistic to be a FeministFantasy. Yet, Creator/ArnoldSchwarzenegger has a rather limited and subdued appearance, so the audience looking for a more ''Conan''-styled work would also be alienated. Furthermore, despite the appearance of a KidHero (and his bumbling sidekick), the violence and the random dancing topless girl would alienate families as well (it's rated PG-13) The fact it was put up against ''Film/BackToTheFuture1'' in the box office didn't help either. Is it any surprise that the work was a BoxOfficeBomb, and [[GenreKiller killed off the sword-and-sorcery genre]]?
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: For all of its faults, the film has a great score courtesy of Music/EnnioMorricone.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** The identity of ExpositionFairy at the beginning is never explained. It is likely that she was hastily added in during post-production, after the originally filmed introduction scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.
** The random dancing topless girl in Gedren's scrying pool. In-universe it's treated like he forgot to re-tune it after his, er, "private entertainment".
* CompleteMonster: [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Queen Gedren]] is an evil tyrant who opens the film by [[PsychoLesbian vamping on to Sonja herself.]] When Sonja resists her advances, Gedren has her family butchered and has Sonja gang raped by Gedren's soldiers. She later massacres a temple of peaceful priestesses to get her hands on an ArtifactOfDoom that will allow her to TakeOverTheWorld and shows no hesitation exterminating any country that resists her. When Sonja herself confronts Gedren later, Gedren says the lives of Sonja's family mean nothing next to [[ItsAllAboutMe a scar Sonja dealt her.]]
* CriticalBacklash: Despite being marked in history as a GenreKiller of the SwordAndSorcery B-movie genre, it's become increasingly common among modern audiences to see ''Red Sonja'' as merely "bad". While it's still marred by crummy acting and some low production values, and hasn't received [[CultClassic cult vindication]] as a SoBadItsGood camp-fest, it's got a handful of creative set pieces, designs and story ideas that results in a mediocre, but ultimately pretty harmless watch whose flaws were drastically exaggerated by its unfortunate timing.
* FairForItsDay: The film does feature an ActionGirl needing to be helped by a strong man (and can only fight because of a goddess's blessing, which she will lose if she falls for a man that does not [[BestHerToBedHer beat her in a fair fight]]), and having to learn to let go of her DoesNotLikeMen nature (even if the reason she doesn't like or trust them is because she was brutally gang raped). However, Red Sonja is repeatedly touted as the best swordsperson in the land. Anyone who challenges that notion is [[TooDumbToLive swiftly dealt with]] and, while Kalidor does save her a couple of times, they work together as a BattleCouple and Sonja is the one who has to save the day - defeating Queen Gedren and destroying the Talisman. Not to mention that, despite Sonja's vow involving BestHerToBedHer, Kalidor never actually beats her in a fight; it's entirely even when they have their duel.
* MisBlamed: The film was lauded as "[[GenreKiller the end of sword-and-sorcery fantasy B-movies]]" due to its wooden acting, weird premise, silly set pieces and bumbling stock characters. Aka ''the hallmarks of the genre''. Not only was sword-and-sorcery doing just about fine for the next few years, but the fiasco of the movie had more to do with extensive ExecutiveMeddling - and the execs then did their very best to blame it on everyone else, even citing "genre fatigue". In the end, the only real fault ''Red Sonja'' had was being a bad movie with a surprisingly high budget that bombed at the box office.
* MoralEventHorizon: Queen Gedren crossed it when she murdered Sonja's family and then had her ''gang-raped'' by her soldiers. Why? [[DisproportionateRetribution Because Sonja rejected her.]]
* {{Narm}}:
** Creator/BrigitteNielsen's dubious acting skills provide many unintentionally hilarious moments.
--->'''''GEDREN!''''' (''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrhhvRwqXYY her eyes bug out to a ridiculous degree as she yells]]'') '''WHERE ''AAAAAAAAAAAARE YEEEEE''OOOOOOUUUU?!'''
** Ditto for the acting of the boy prince ("BOY? You call me BOY?!"). Though he's technically ''supposed'' to be a spoiled brat, still, he has a tendency to shout out his lines with a weirdly eager tone.
** The film opens with an ExpositionFairy telling Sonja about the killing of her family and her rape - traumatic events she just experienced.
** Kalidor ''slowly'' carrying Sonja's sister to safety as the frantic music is blaring loudly. ''Then'' there being no music as he fights some soldiers right after.
*** Him later telling Sonja her sister is dead... which she can very clearly tell.
** Gedren and her soldiers' awkwardly long walk from a hallway to her throne.
** Gedren's wizard using a spell to cut Sonja a couple of times... Then doing nothing as she realizes what he's doing and takes a couple of seconds to reach him. On that note, Gedren's jumpcut teleporting during her fight with Sonja.
* NarmCharm: The film is extremely silly to watch, but for some viewers that's part of the charm.
* NightmareFuel: The scenes of the priestesses guarding the Talisman being slaughtered, and the surviving prisoners getting thrown into the pit have been known for giving many an 80s child nightmares.
* QuestionableCasting: Creator/BrigitteNielsen had not acted before when she was cast in the lead role. Granted, in the 80s finding someone with the AmazonianBeauty necessary for the character who could also act was never going to be easy.
* SpecialEffectFailure:
** The CGI for the ExpositionFairy at the start is inconsistent and poorly animated, even for an 80s film.
** In the opening scene with Gedren's army attacking the nuns, we see the same nun being thrown into the pit twice.
** The sea monster looks so bad that they actually tried to cover it with a line that it's a machine, despite this being a ridiculous case of SchizoTech.
** The skeleton bridge over the lava is quite obviously a matte painting.
** The destruction of Gedren's palace includes some dirt being sprinkled directly in front of the camera lens.
* SpiritualSuccessor:
** To Arnold's ''Conan'' films. More precisely, it is a spiritual successor to ''Film/ConanTheDestroyer'', clearly trying to use its popularity and marketing despite ChannelHop to a different studio. As a result, it has a LighterAndSofter tone, being a run-of-the-mill 80s SwordAndSorcery production focusing on buff and half-naked people waving around practice swords and delivering cheesy one-liners. Schwarzenegger was even supposed to play Conan in a cameo, until a bunch of {{Executive Meddling}}s and WritingAroundTrademarks required to change the character's name - along with tricking Arnie into much bigger involvement in the production. Music/EnnioMorricone, who provided the soundtrack, was outright told to deliver something "similar to [[Music/BasilPoledouris Basil (Poledouris)]]" and the result could be even mistaken for music from ''Conan the Destroyer''.
** The story can also be considered one to the Western ''Film/HannieCaulder'': A red-haired woman is sexually assaulted and left for dead by the villains, who also slaughters her family. She then trains herself in weaponry and undergoes a quest for revenge with the aid of a male mercenary.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: It seems like an odd decision to cut the entire backstory scenes establishing what happened to Sonja in the opening; judging from the trailer, these scenes were filmed and could have made for a good opening (if a little on the bleak side). It's instead given via an ExpositionFairy to [[AsYouKnow Sonja herself]], and the final confrontation between her and Gedren is officially the first time they interact on screen.
* WTHCostumingDepartment: The Grandmaster's outfit looks like he has a flag coming out of each of his shoulders.
