* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: The main villain, [[spoiler:Mr. Joker]], is supposed to be a fantastic manipulator and strategist, yet he seems to be doing all he can to turn the characters against him. In fact, a lot of his actions only make sense if you assume he wanted to be stopped. For example, why would he [[spoiler:tell Yomiko he plans to sacrifice Nancy's child and then follow that up by showing her some unknown horror inflicted on her missing boyfriend, knowing the kind of power she has and her unlikelihood to take his side]]? Following that, why would he always ask for [[spoiler:Yomiko to surrender, never attempting to kill her]]? Why would he [[spoiler:try to turn Nenene over to Dokusensha on their first meeting, when he knows they are now powerless and are soon to be absorbed by the British library? Keep in mind that she had just been rescued from them recently by the Paper Sisters, and they had barely escaped with their lives. It's a masterful stroke for getting four people he has never met to instantly unite against him at any cost.]] It applies to his dealings with other characters as well. Why choose [[spoiler:Wendy]] to do the dirty work, repeatedly calling it dirty work and promising to give her dirtier and dirtier work in the future? Wouldn't it make more sense to pick someone a bit more emotionally dead inside rather than [[spoiler:the bright-eyed office worker from the OVAs who saw to it that no one was lacking for tea]]? And finally, why would he [[spoiler:gather all of his biggest threats in the one place where they could do the most damage to his plans and to the British library in the last episode]]? If his goal was to make sure the grand evil scheme was unsuccessful without making it obvious to his colleagues, then all the pieces start to fit together.

* LesYay: The subtext implied between Yomiko and Nenene pops up quite a few times, and an old friend of Nenene once assumed Yomiko was her girlfriend; even Anita is a bit suspicious of the situation. Anita and her classmate Hisami are also very close. Hisami even tells a boy interested in her that she cannot date him because she is seeing Anita. And the "Carry me or I'll be forced to kiss you!" scene with Nenene and Maggie. Yomiko's bond with Nancy, which was quite intense in the original series, is further developed here, coming across as something deeply romantic. When Nenene finally catches up with the two of them, the situation could easily be interpreted as a love triangle, with [[spoiler: [[FirstGirlWins Nenene victorious in the end]]]].
** It's just not an ROD series without LesYay all over the place.

* ToyShip: Anita/Hisami and Anita/Junior. Also Anita/Okahara when Natsume pointed what looks like their SlapSlapKiss moments.
* WhatAnIdiot: Joker pressed every one of Yomiko's buttons when she came to demand the return of Nenene's child, culminating in him showing her the presumably grisly fate of her lover. He did all of this to a papermaster while inside his organization's base, a ''massive library''. The resulting devastation when Yomiko went on a rampage not only crippled the Library but also allowed the book {{MacGuffin}}s to be lost.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic: The shot of a statue of the Virgin Mary during [[spoiler:the destruction of Hong Kong]]. Also, John Woo (the pigeon) shows up at the end of the episode in a manner evocative of the story of Noah's Ark.

* MoeMoe: Yomiko-chan. Maggie is an interesting example, her personality is quite moe, and clashes with her distinctly un-moe appearance to make her so adorably awkward.

* CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming: The story of how the Paper Sisters met. [[spoiler: Averted when we learn the whole story is a lie; [[{{Reconstructed Trope}} Reconstructed]] when the ending shows that their meeting did happen; it was what was before that that was constructed.]]

* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:Joker]], who regularly and casually [[KickTheDog kicks the dog]] and has no redeeming characteristics whatsoever. He even admits it. His reasoning is if his plan succeeds, [[spoiler:his existence as Joker will be ''gone'', completely rewritten by the Gentleman along with everyone else]].
** He's a rather interesting mix of Complete Monster with {{Affably Evil}} and {{Knight Templar}}. Though he does horrible things, he still believes that everything he does is for the good of mankind, and his underlings are almost all written as hard working professionals who also believe they are doing good.
** Wendy also enters into this territory after Operation Fahrenheit 451, and the final revelation that [[spoiler: she has no feelings for Junior other than as a tool, and never did]]
** TheDragon Sonny Wong is a genuine CompleteMonster who kills people in cold blood and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. At least [[spoiler: Joker]] is AffablyEvil. Also, hope and pray he keeps those sunglasses on...
