** Considered this for the franchise as a whole as this was when the series truly started telling serialized, season-long storytelling instead of just episodic plots with some isolated mini-arcs. Both heroes and villains started gaining more complex characterization, with villains (not BrainwashedAndCrazy) that have the capacity [[HeelFaceTurn for redemption]] and heroes that have flaws that are more than a CompressedVice lasting a single episode and resolved with AnAesop.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: ''Series/PowerRangersTurbo'' featured Lieutenant Stone taking over for Ernie as the manager of the Juice Bar ([[SerendipityWritesThePlot due to Ernie's actor leaving the show due to health issues]]) after losing his job at the police department. This idea was generally received poorly, striking many people as [[StatusQuoIsGod a nonsensical excuse to keep both Stone and the Juice Bar in the show]]. ''In Space'' quietly drops that idea, giving the Rangers a new hangout spot called "The Surf Spot" run by a new character named Adelle--who has a fully fleshed-out personality of her own.

His crimes in the series include using the same bug creatures to infect the Rangers; forcibly fusing with his rival Ecliptor and using him a shield; and attacking the survivors of KO-35 with a monster that turns victims into coral whilst framing the Rangers for it. When Astronema learned the truth and Ecliptor refused to betray her, Darkonda turns him into a cyborg so that he can't betray him. When they recapture Karone, Darkonda [[UnwillingRoboticisation forcefully grafts cybernetic implants into her]]. In [[Recap/PowerRangersInSpaceS1E42CountdownToDestructionPart1 part 1]] of the finale, he makes [[TheStarscream his last bid for power]] by directly attacking [[GreaterScopeVillain Dark Specter]] with two torpedoes capable of destroying a planet. A power-hungry, gleeful psychopath who endangers all around him, Darkonda is the vilest villain from the "Zordon Era".

* JerkassWoobie: Astronema/Karone. After being kidnapped by Darkonda, she was raised by Ecliptor into being evil. However, despite her evil ways, when she founds out that she is actually Andros' sister, she begins to have a breakdown about who she is before confronting Ecliptor about it. Unfortunately, when she tried to become genuinely good, especially after the rangers finally accepted her, a recently brainwashed Ecliptor forced her back into evil via mind control and she became the main villain for the rest of the season.

* {{Glurge}}: [[spoiler: Zordon's]] HeroicSacrifice becomes this when a bit of FridgeLogic is applied. Namely: if he could have created a WorldHealingWave and magically fixed everything all along just by dying, why didn't he [[HeroicSuicide have someone kill him]] six seasons ago?

** The [[Series/NinjaTurtlesTheNextMutation Ninja Turtle]] costumes look a lot worse than they do on their series, with Michelangelo's shell even coming apart from his back near the end of "Shell-Shocked".

** Dark Specter, despite being (ostensibly) the series' GreaterScopeVillain, does very little throughout the season and ends up being killed by TheStarscream early in the GrandFinale. He never even once has a real fight with the Rangers.

Tasked by Dark Specter to destroy the Space Rangers, Astronema would fight many battles with them before finding out her identity as Andros' [[LongLostRelative long lost sister Karone]], leading to her defection to the Rangers. Upon being kidnapped by a reprogrammed Ecliptor and installed with neural implants to keep her on the side of evil, Astronema decides to kill both the Space Rangers and Dark Specter in order to [[TheStarscream usurp the latter's position as Grand Monarch of Evil]] through the creation of the [[ThePsychoRangers Psycho Rangers]], who beat the Rangers within an inch of their lives in their earlier encounters and drained Dark Specter's life force for power. Despite their eventual defeat, Astronema would continue to inflict significant damage on the Rangers, successfully luring them into a trap that saw the destruction of the Delta Megazord by [[TheDragon Ecliptor]], and destroying the Mega Voyager using [[ActionBomb Tankenstein]] in the subsequent episode. Never suffering any significant VillainDecay throughout the series, Astronema would be regarded as one of the most iconic villains in Power Rangers.
