* InternetBackdraft: Darkrai, Scizor, Croagunk, and Empoleon being exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version despite their files being added to the Wii U version in a patch beforehand wasn't received well by a section of the fanbase.

So both of these are about vicious conflicts within a fanbase in which there is little to no middle ground, simply being angry about X isn't an example. Most of these also lean heavily towards one side or simply say that two sides exist without explaining on how the base is broken.

** Pikachu Libre, the successor to the Dark Pit fiasco. A way to anger fans who were hoping for Hawlucha or an interesting addition to the roster? On the other hand, with both Pikachu and Pikachu Libre on the roster as an aversion to the OneSteveLimit, some fans who were worried favorites like Greninja and Delphox couldn't be added due to their pre-evolutions Frogadier and Fennekin already being Support Characters now have new hope for their possible inclusion.

** On a similar note to Pikachu Libre, the reveal that both Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo are playable. Though some people (chiefly those who aren't fond of Shadow Mewtwo) are happy that the regular Mewtwo is playable alongside its Shadow counterpart, others consider one or the other's presence to be redundant.
** Braixen. A number of players are glad that a not-fully-evolved Pokémon was finally included on the roster to mix things up for variety, although many players seem to convey that the most probable rationale for Braixen's inclusion over its evolution, Delphox, being purely based off of "better aesthetics" the fact that its MagicalGirl vibe is pandering to the AndShotacon fanbase is also judged "creepy" by many and its prominence thanks to the XY season of the anime, with a secondary reason being attributed to Braixen's legs lending themselves towards better agility/movement during combat. Other players are dismayed with the inclusion, feeling that Braixen is out of place on the roster since it is not fully evolved, and that Delphox (who some players feel has a decent design) should have been included instead, on account of Delphox being the highest-evolved member of the Fennekin evolutionary Pokémon family/line.This stance may be due to the state of being "fully-evolved" generally being indicative of a Pokémon having access to its most powerful natural form (thus being suitable for Fighting Games, which typically emphasize strength). Additionally, most of the tougher challenges in the core series Pokémon video games consist solely of fully-evolved Pokémon. This is, to a lesser extent, similar to those regarding that Raichu should be in the roster instead of Pikachu Libre or just Pikachu.
** Chandelure, to an extent. Some individuals are overjoyed with its offbeat inclusion and that a Generation-5-debuting Pokémon is finally a Pokkén Tournament combatant; other people are simply going "WTF?" with the baffling news that an inanimate, object-based chandelier/lamp Pokémon has joined the roster, let alone the fact that Chandelure joined the roster before other seemingly viable candidates such as Hawlucha, Swampert, and Heracross. There's also the issue that Chandelure's reveal bumps the number of playable Fire-type Pokémon on the number to four, outnumbering all other Pokémon types (discounting Mega Evolution-based type changes), including Fighting, considered the game's signature type, with the Normal and Rock types not receiving any sort of playable representation yet.
** If the inclusion of fan-favorite Blaziken as a BruceLeeClone was overall well-received, some would have preferred a female one or at least the possibility to play as both.
* BrokenBase:
** When it comes to the fact that non-LAN local multiplayer runs at 30 FPS (as opposed to the standard 60 people expect from fighting games), do you not like it, or do you not care?
** The preferential treatment that the Japanese-only arcade game is getting when it comes to DLC, namely the release of Darkrai, Scizor, Croagunk, and Empoleon, which have been announced for the arcade version, but with absolutely no follow-up as for any console release. Some fans point out that new files have been added to the console version, so home players are bound to get access to the new characters "eventually", and are just happy the developers are making good on their promise to add more fighters after the game's release. Others are simply frustrated that since the arcade version is only readily available in Japan, anyone living outside that region is forced to wait months for the same content, not to mention calling conspiracy that the developers are purposely withholding content to generate hype, since that seems to be the exact same thing that happened when the game was first released in arcades and the makers were oddly tight-lipped about a console release.
*** The four characters finally were made available to consoles in 2017...but only on the UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch port. The playerbase outside Japan was happy to be able have access to these characters at last, but some were mad that they were never made available on the Wii U version.

* HypeBacklash: When Masuda teased a huge announcement at the 2015 World Championships, everyone was anticipating the reveal of a new main series game due to the unknown Pokémon showcased in the September edition of [=CoroCoro=] and TheStinger of Hoopa and the Clash of Ages. Instead it was just the reveal that Pokkén would be ported to UsefulNotes/WiiU and that Pikachu Libre would be a playable character, which was viewed as nothing really exciting across most of the fanbase due to the existing expectation of the game getting a console release anyway. Every now and then during the live announcement they'd pause during their speeches to allow the crowd to applause... which hardly anybody did.

* FriendlyFandoms: Developed near-instantly with VideoGame/SuperSmashBros on its announcement, as both series are Fighting Games involving characters from Nintendo-owned franchises. Several well-known competitive Smash players have even announced their intent to get into Pokkén, and popular website Website/SmashBoards has an entire section on Pokkén in spite of it otherwise not being related to Smash. It also helps that the game has a simple control scheme similar to that of Smash, which further appeals to those who aren't a fan of the more button-heavy fighters.

** The tutorials only tell you the controls for playing on the Wii U gamepad, even if you've selected a different controller setup. Like the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination, where the buttons for the gamepad don't come anywhere close to properly corresponding. Considering Nia's speech isn't even very specific towards the buttons ("To use a grab attack, press these buttons!"), you wouldn't expect it to be too much to ask for the game to display a different diagram based on the controller setup you chose at the start.

** Given the focus on Pokémon from Generation 4 and earlier, Braixen's reveal was a pleasant surprise. This is doubly unexpected due to the fact Braixen is the un-evolved form of Delphox, when most fighters so far are fully evolved (Pikachu is also in the same boat, but it is generally considered to get a free pass for being the SeriesMascot of Franchise/Pokemon).

Though it might have to do with the fact that Braixen is Serena's signature Pokemon.

** Croagunk came as a bit of a shock because not only was there reason to expect other Pokémon besides it and, like Braixen, is not the final form of a Pokémon (Toxicroak in this case), but it was already in the game as a support Pokémon! ** Of all the Legendary Pokémon, who would have thought the the first one shown would be the quadrupedal Suicune? Suicune's role as the mascot of Pokémon Crystal might've helped a bit, though.
** Machamp is another one; although in hindsight, it makes sense, what with Machamp being one of the most iconic Fighting-types of the original Pokémon generation, Machamp's serious lack of love and spotlight over the years made its inclusion an unexpected, but welcomed surprise.
** Weavile as well. Being a relatively popular Pokémon, but one that hasn't received much attention from Creator/GameFreak over the years, definitely made its entrance into Pokkén Tournament a very pleasant surprise.
** Pikachu Libre wasn't expected because there was already a Pikachu on the roster and the MaskedLuchador theme was done by Hawlucha first.
** Who else was expecting Mewtwo, let alone "Shadow Mewtwo" to appear as both a boss and a playable character?
** Given the focus on Pokémon from Generation 4 and earlier, Braixen's reveal was a pleasant surprise. There's also the issue that Chandelure's reveal bumps the number of playable Fire-type Pokémon on the number to four, outnumbering all other Pokémon types (discounting Mega Evolution-based type changes), including Fighting, considered the game's signature type, with the Bug, Normal, and Rock types not receiving any sort of playable representation yet.

** Dragonite, now that it has been revealed to have been relegated to an AssistCharacter as opposed to a playable part of the roster. Some fans are calling the pseudo-legendary's inclusion as support a case of TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter, while others are happy Dragonite made it beyond a background Pokémon at all (and, of course, some fans don't care either way). Similar debates also exist for other popular Pokémon turned into support characters, such as Mismagius, Ninetales, and Sylveon.

This changed when Croagunk was PromotedToPlayable despite itself being an assist character, meaning that Dragonite and any other support Pokémon still have a chance.
