Her popularity grew further after OMOCAT released [[https://twitter.com/_omocat/status/1441606537412112389 artwork of her]], which also revealed that she was a favorite among the developers as well. It's common to joke (not unreasonably) about her being Basil's [[ParentalSubstitute real mom]], if not a parental figure for the ''entire main cast'' considering their own familial issues.

** There's people out there who consider [[spoiler:Basil]] to be an obsessive, possesive {{Yandere}} who [[spoiler:chose the suicide cover up just to have Sunny for himself]], just because he begs Sunny not to leave him alone again, choosing to ignore that [[spoiler:he was as traumatized and shocked as Sunny, possibly mentally unwell long before the accident, and definetely being so afterwards; he chose to distance himself from Sunny after his shutting in, to the point of {{not knowing he was moving away until Kel told him'', and that he was under heavy stress and grief after his grandma's implied death and it all culminated in his breaking down.]]

* MoralEventHorizon: Sweetheart seems to be vain and narcissistic, but she doesn't seem bad. That is, until it's revealed that she sentences anyone who crosses her to starve in her dungeons, and the Hikkikomori route shows skeletons. A person can do something as small as refuse to date her. As a result, a player is practically cheering when [[spoiler:either Humphrey eats her, or Perfectheart turns Sweetheart into her personal servant]].

** "Squizzard Exterminator" falls under the same category of "not hard, but extremely tedious" in that it requires you to kill 100 Squizzards. However, unlike the bunny killing sidequest, there's only one variety of Squizzard and encounters will only have two of them at most.
** "Universally Loved", which is the achievement for [[spoiler:getting all the possible flowers on the good ending. The difficulty of this achievement is because it's a huge GuideDangIt, as much of the sidequests are off the beaten path and easy to miss, and unlike the Headspace sidequests, you have to keep track of the Faraway Town sidequests on your own]].

** Halfway through the Slime Girls' health, they "do their thing" by swapping the party's Heart and Juice before throwing a bottle that hits everyone. If you've been very liberal with your skills, this can easily Toast multiple party members at once.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: The game has some colorful worldbuilding and a cute, {{Animesque}} art style, so it ''looks'' decent for the kids to play. However, it deals with mental illness, isolation, self-hatred, and the consequences thereof -- secretly [[RealismInducedHorror in a setting more mundane]] than most of the RPG's ilk -- thus being the single darkest work Omocat made.

* IncestYayShipping: Sunny is sometimes shipped with his sister Mari, because of the latter's kindly demeanor and sense of humor playing to his quietness and their time joined at the hip, which fleshes out their bond more than Mari's with Hero.

* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Sunny. While Basil and Aubrey are his most popular parings, he's been shipped with pretty much every other character in his age group, namely Kel, Mincy, The Maverick, and Cris.

* CrackPairing: Any ship that ships a character with [[spoiler:Something]]. Especially Hero and Basil.

* RatedMForMoney: The console port is rated M for violence, blood, and strong language, with the latter being secluded to a rare quote, yet enough to contribute to the rating. Furthermore, the game was originally released for the PC and uses PsychologicalHorror as its main selling point, despite such being a small fraction of the actual content.

Mari's death still hit him hard, and an optional scene reveals that he felt isolated and alone when the gang drifted apart and had to endure his brother falling into months of depression. That’s not even getting into his parents taking Hero’s side when Hero lashed out at Kel for trying to comfort him.]]

* AlternateAesopInterpretation: [[spoiler:Because of the GoldenEnding's ambiguity, the final message has been interpreted on varying spots on the SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism, from "accept that your old friends might never bear to wrap you up in their arms again" to "part of loving yourself is to trust that those who truly love you, whether others or yourself, will be there for you in spite of your mistakes".]]

* AdaptationDisplacement: Due to the game exploding in popularity, not many fans know that it is based on a Website/{{Tumblr}} webcomic by the artist and was originally going to be a graphic novel. The comic's physical version is out of print.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** The title character himself is likely the biggest example of this in the game. [[spoiler:Even as the game ends, it's not clear where Sunny ends and Omori begins, or if the latter’s existence is literal in the first place. Is he really just a figment of Sunny's imagination relaying his own suicidal thoughts back to himself, or has he become [[LiteralSplitPersonality something more]] ([[MaybeMagicMaybeMundane or already was]])? When Sunny vandalizes the Photo Album or pretends that certain doors don't exist, is it his repression happening in realtime, or is Omori influencing how Sunny perceives reality?]] There is also the bit that in the good ending, [[spoiler:Omori kills Sunny...but when Sunny persists anyway when you click "Yes" on given the option to continue, Omori gives him a CooldownHug, drops the knife, and fades away. Perhaps he wanted confirmation that Sunny no longer needed him]].
** There is also the question of [[spoiler:Omori's relationship with Dream Basil]]. Are they actually friends, or [[spoiler:does Omori actually hate the guy]]? The game lore reveals that [[spoiler:Omori has reset Headspace multiple times to keep Sunny from learning the truth and each reset reunites Basil with the friend group; in a case of irony, the real Basil helped cover up the Truth while Dream Basil keeps wanting to talk about it, having remembered that Mari died. The quest to find Dream Basil inevitably leads to the disturbing scenes in Black Space where spiders, an elevator, Omori, and his friends keep murdering different Basil sprites; Omori is revealed to be the ruler of Black Space, and he put Basil in there to keep him from revealing the Truth. The multiple deaths are beyond cruel and they hint that Omori keeping the group from finding Basil has more spite than fulfilling his purpose to hide The Truth, showing uncharacteristic anger]].
** Sunny's mother. Does she know about what shattered the friend circle and is implied to be known by her (former) husband? Is she a doting (if easily distracted) parent trying to take care of her son while understanding their need for space, or is she just neglectful and doing the bare minimum to make sure she [[spoiler:doesn't lose another child]]?
*** Sunny is sixteen, but his mother still refers to herself as "Mommy" in the voicemails that she leaves for her son. Most kids at that age say "Mom" or "Mother. Is it that his mother still thinks of him as a little boy, or is she aware that [[spoiler:Sunny is stuck in arrested development and his conscience is mentally displaced in time]]?
** Something also has a lot of potential for this, for similar reasons as Omori. [[spoiler:While it certainly is creepy and has no problem peppering Headspace with jumpscares, ultimately most of its interactions with Sunny and Omori are centered around the truth of Mari's death, something the former has to acknowledge to reach the good ending and something the latter deliberately obfuscates. If Omori represents harmful ignorance, Something could be considered a form of BrutalHonesty.]]
*** [[spoiler:This puts Something's status as the main BigBad into question — does it represent the trauma itself, or, rather, the ''need'' for the trauma to be addressed?]]
** Real Kel and Hero argue about this regarding [[spoiler:Aubrey. Kel believes that Aubrey has changed too much and no longer cares about her friends, given she nearly drowned Basil. Hero says she wouldn't forget about her childhood friends just because of a traumatic incident. We see some evidence that both are right, though Aubrey admits she attacked Basil because she mistakenly thought he had removed Mari's pictures from the photo album. It's a question of Aubrey caring either too much or too little]].
** The game does not elaborate on what [[spoiler:Mari and Sunny argued about the day that he smashed the expensive violin that his friends had bought for him. It could have been Mari being worried about Sunny's wellbeing, with Sunny lashing out in frustration. Mari could have also asked why the heck he smashed the gift from their friends, in an OOCIsSeriousBusiness moment]].
*** [[spoiler:The Truth Album Transcript found in the game's files tells the story of this: Sunny was so frustrated from playing the song over and over again, he felt like he was making more mistakes every time he attempted it, and his fingers hurt so bad, he threw the violin down the stairs in a fit of rage. Mari confronted Sunny at the top of the stairs about it afterwards. Sunny wanted to run away from the confrontation as he always does, but Mari stepped in front of him and said she wasn't done talking to him yet. He pushed her defensively to get away from her, just like Aubrey pushed Basil at the lake.]]
** Mari herself also invites this, given [[spoiler:she's a PosthumousCharacter. Everyone in her friend group goes for NeverSpeakIllOfTheDead, with everyone saying that she was a wonderful cook, generous with her time and things, and compassionate towards her loved ones. We also get a flashback of her saving Sunny from drowning, and tearfully hugging him afterward. There are hints that she was the favorite of their parents, however, and that she could have been a perfectionist, unintentionally pressuring Sunny to be the same]].
** The extra-text from datamining in the photos that [[spoiler:reveal how Mari really died showed that it wasn't Sunny's idea to make her death look like a suicide. He was in HeroicBSOD, and tried tucking her into bed to make her wake up. Basil took the initiative to hang up her body and asked for Sunny's help in bring the corpse outside and finding the jumprope. Even Basil seems to have no idea about why he did it, rather than calling 911. Was he also on autopilot? Did he worry how the others would turn on Sunny]]
** Real Basil [[spoiler:approaches Sunny with garden shears if you decide to save him on the last day, "reassuring" him, "This is for the best". From the sound of it, it seems to some that he intends a MurderSuicide in the middle of his breakdown... though he does say that he's going after Sunny's Something, which keeps Sunny from leaving the room]].

* EnjoyTheStorySkipTheGame: While OMORI’s gameplay is largely well-regarded, especially compared to many other contemporary RPG Maker games, there’s a section of players that are largely in it for the Faraway Town segments, where gameplay is the lightest; ironically, a lot of these fans are more accustomed to games that are closer to the more traditional use of this trope, like ‘’VideoGame/{{OFF}}’’.

** During the game's events, both Sunny and Basil exhibit symptoms of PTSD: increased emotional numbness, problems with sleeping, recurring distress due to vivid hallucinations, difficulty maintaining relationships, and repression and avoidance of the trauma of [[spoiler:Sunny's AccidentalMurder of his sister]].
