** Casting Music/{{Rihanna}} has drawn skepticism from many people, due to having been previously in ''Film/{{Battleship}}'', a film in which Rihanna's acting was among its criticisms. This died down a bit after the film was released.

* MagnificentBitch: [[PhantomThief Deborah "Debbie" Ocean]] is [[Film/OceansEleven Danny]]'s younger sister who ended up in jail for five years after her partner and boyfriend Claude Becker turned on her to save himself when they were caught pulling scams. Falsely convincing the parole board she'll turn over a new leaf, Debbie celebrates her freedom by [[ConMan hustling]] a store out of beauty products and a hotel out of a room. Debbie concocts a heist with her friend Lou Miller and five other women in which they'll infiltrate the Met Gala after arranging for actress Daphne Kluger to be wearing the expensive diamond Toussaint necklace and then steal it while switching it out with a counterfeit, with each woman getting an equal share. The heist is successful, though Debbie deals Daphne in when she catches on to things and Debbie is also able to [[BestServedCold get revenge on Claude]] by framing him for the theft. Debbie also makes arrangements with Lou to have the royal jewels stolen at the same time so as to exponentially increase each of the eight shares between the women, with Debbie taking pleasure knowing full well that her brother would've been proud of her success.

* HilariousInHindsight: Music/{{Rihanna}} was the most important guest at the 2018 Met Gala in RealLife, and she plays a thief who participates in a heist at the same gala in the film.

* DancingBear: Some detractors have said this of the all-female main cast; dismissing it as an attention-grabbing gimmick to prop up an otherwise [[SoOkayItsAverage unremarkable]] heist film.

** Much like with ''Film/PeterRabbit'', James Corden's playing a serious, StraightMan investigator received this response as well, with many viewers feeling that [[{{Narm}} his performance took them completely out of the film]].

* LGBTFanbase: Oh, yes! This movie has a ''massive'' fanbase of sapphic women, which really isn't a surprise -- it features not one, not two, but ''eight'' [[MsFanservice extremely attractive leading ladies]], there's bucketloads of LesYay, there's no heterosexual romance outside of flashbacks (and the guy in said romance is the closest thing the film has to an antagonist, having framed the woman he was dating in the backstory, so that hardly counts), ''and'' it has Creator/CateBlanchett, who has been nicknamed "Queen of the Lesbians."

* AssPull: Daphne [[spoiler:figuring out the con and deciding to help them]] is done with little to no foreshadowing or anything implying that she's smart enough to do so or that she's [[spoiler:nice to decide to help them]]. The twist that [[spoiler:they stole the entire crown jewels exhibit also comes more or less out of nowhere, with the only foreshadowing being Lou grabbing the toy submarine.]]

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Daphne is perhaps the most love or hate figure in the main cast, mostly because [[spoiler: she spends three quarters of the movie as a bitchy celebrity bimbo antagonistic figure before abruptly revealed to have figured things out and then blackmailed her way into the group. Some viewers enjoyed Anne Hathaway's performance throughout while other's found her switch from basically a HateSink to one of the gang very jarring. A third group didn't mind the reveal that Daphne had HiddenDepths but felt having her accepted and forgiven essentially instantly [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot wasted the possibility of Daphne being a cunning and dangerous opponent to Debbie's gang.]]]]

* FanPreferredCouple: Debbie/Lou became the biggest ship in the fandom literally overnight.

* IdiotPlot: The necklace being so famous means it would be impossible to fence, and even selling the diamonds individually wouldn't get the team anywhere close to the $150 million the whole thing is worth. [[spoiler: Which is why they steal more than one necklace.]]

* LesYay: Lou and Debbie are practically flirting for most of the movie. After Debbie gets out of jail, Lou greets her with a kiss, and at one point jokingly asks Debbie if she's proposing. To which Debbie says no... because she doesn't have a ring yet.

* HesJustHiding: Even ''Debbie'' casts doubts on the fact that Danny Ocean is dead.

* ActorShipping: In conjunction with the FanPreferredCouple below, shipping Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock themselves together has become at least as popular as Debbie and Lou, thanks to their flirty, sarcastic banter in interviews, frequent physical closeness, and Cate's bad habit of [[ThatCameOutWrong accidentally making]] [[AccidentalInnuendo innuendos]]. Cate/Sarah Paulson is probably the next-most popular, followed shortly after by, well, [[LauncherOfAThousandShips Cate and]] any of the other women.

* OvershadowedByControversy: The announcement that Matt Damon had a cameo in such a female-centric film got pretty questionable after his remarks on the "Me Too" movement, and a petition was even started to cut his cameo. This died down when his cameo was confirmed to be cut, though two other members of the original cast make cameos, too.

** The team's success relies heavily on everyone responsible for the Toussaint being inexplicably lax on security, incompetent, or very short sighted. [[They hired a security team to watch over the necklace all night at the gala, but Constance was able to get the necklace off of Daphne in the bathroom, where security couldn't enter, because nobody thought to hire any female security staff in the eventuality that Daphne would need to use the bathroom.]]
** [spoiler: When the security team thinks the Toussaint fell off in the water, nobody immediately checks the necklace's locking mechanism to make sure it's still working properly. The also didn't think to have someone check the necklace's authenticity before they retrieved it from Daphne's possession.
