** Beyond the HongKongDub the series is known for when it comes to non-Japanese vocal tracks, the most notable thing that was criticized at release was when Naruto and Sasuke [[AnArmAndALeg blow off an arm from each other in the ending]]. The resulting wounds are really just their arms blackened to try to fit in with the blood stain, but not only are the outlines of their fingers still faintly visible, there's scenes thereafter that show the blackened arms in full view. The only reason this likely happened was due to CERO ratings getting more and more tight about violence in recent years.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: After even the PC version was locked to 30 FPS (which, to many a PC gamer, is unacceptable), the Road to Boruto DLC coincided with a 60 FPS patch.

* ScrappyMechanic: Dash Cut supports. A controversial mechanic often criticised for making players very difficult to close in on and incentivising a passive, defensive playstyle. Since ninja dashes and chakra dashes are blocked by these supports, there's almost nothing stopping the opponent from gaining an early life lead and running away for the rest of the round. Many players have created entire guides purely dedicated to tips on circumventing Dash Cut.
* SequelDifficultyDrop: While the ''Storm'' series has never been particularly known for its difficulty, ''Storm 4'' takes this to another level.
** Losing a battle in story mode will offer you a choice between "continue fighting with your health fully restored and a damage buff" or "continue fighting with your health fully restored and a defence buff". There is no option to restart the battle from the beginning, unless the player pauses the game and does so manually. While ''Storm 3'' offered the option to restart with full health, it only did so in multi-stage boss battles, only after losing repeatedly, and would still set you back to a checkpoint instead of letting you continue from where you left off. It also didn't give the player any additional buffs.
** Failing [=QTEs=] no longer has any negative consequences. Missed [=QTEs=] in ''Storm 2'' and ''3'' would play a "failure" animation and deal a decent amount of damage to your health. In Storm 4, the same "successful" animation plays regardless of if the button was pressed or not; the only purpose of hitting [=QTEs=] is getting a higher score and unlocking the brief secret factor cutscene at the end of boss battles.

* PowerCreep: While some legacy characters like Neji, Pain, Nagato and Danzo remain competitively viable and see frequent play, a lot of fighters returning from previous ''Storm'' games tend to have rather underpowered toolkits compared to newcomers.
** ''The Last'' Naruto and Sasuke brought with them the Inferno Fireball and Rasengan Super Barrage respectively. The former can be used in the air, has a large hitbox and enormous priority, destroying almost all other projectiles in its path. The latter sends out two fast-moving clones or, when charged, four clones, which are amazing for pressure and lock your opponent out of doing much besides blocking or jumping to avoid the attack.
** Kaguya can transport you to a lava dimension where all the attacks of her grounded combo become unblockable. She was immediately banned from tournaments.
** Tayuya's unique mechanic allows her to use her Dokis to deal damage at various ranges, but also as meat shields to tank attacks and block dashes. Dokis have infinite health and get staggered for only a moment when hit, making them much more reliable than other remote-controlled characters such as puppets or Akamaru. Unsurprisingly, Tauyua is also banned in tournaments.
** Many tilt attacks from ''Storm Revolution'' onwards have interesting properties and much better utility. While the tilts of characters like Rock Lee, Jiraya, Suigtetsu, Sai and many others amount to little more than slow, mid-ranged attacks which knock down or push away the enemy, Rampaging Obito's tilt makes him run across half the stage at great speed while completely invulnerable and can be instantly cancelled into his combo at any time. Other highlights include Sarada's tilt - a trap which, when stepped into, staggers for a good second and leaves the opponent standing, making it easy to follow up with a combo or Secret Technique.
** Rinne Sharingan Sasuke's grab has a generous vertical hitbox and an insane amount of active frames. It lasts so long, that instead of trying to hit the opponent, many players activate it preemptively and wait for their enemy to run into it. While its horizontal range is only decent, no other grab in the series can compare in terms of duration.
** Six Paths Madara's awakening gives him access to four Limbo clones which can be made to throw spears or charge at the enemy. These attacks have no cooldown and let Madara move freely as they happen. Defending against or dodging this is nearly impossible, as hitting Madara will not interrupt the attacks of his clones. You guessed it, entering this awakening is also banned in tournaments.

** Losing a battle in story mode will offer you a choice between "continue fighting with your health fully restored and a damage buff" or "continue fighting with your health fully restored and a defence buff". There is no option to restart the battle from the beginning, unless the player pauses the game and does so manually. While ''Storm 3'' offered the option to restart with full health, it only did so in multi-stage boss battles, only after losing repeatedly, and choosing this would lower your final battle rating. It also didn't give the player any additional buffs.

* BrokenBase: Some aren't happy the game is for 8th gen consoles only.
** The initial lack of trailers and Free battle/VS. mode gameplay in the game's coverage made a few fans wary of the game's quality, many making calls of InvisibleAdvertising against Creator/BandaiNamcoEntertainment. However, subsequent trailers and footage have rectified this specific avenue of complaint.
** Some are complaining of the majority of cutscenes between battle being rendered in stills. Some say that this is lazy on Bandai Namco's part, while defenders argue that the SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome in the battles themselves more than makes up for it (for example, 26 GB of the 37 GB size of the game is for the story battles alone, and that without counting the inclusion of English, Japanese and ''Spanish'' voice acting). This is rectified by everything after the fight with Six Paths Obito having more in game renders.
** The fact that some cutscenes are blocked from being recorded and streamed, which is especially a pain for Let's Players. Except if you play on PC, of course.
** For Spaniard players, the inclusion of Mexican Spanish voice acting even in the European version of the PC version. Mostly due to the infamous rivalry between Spaniard dubs and Latin American dubs. This stings specially because, historically, Spain has received video game dubs much more consistently than Latin America[[note]][[https://newzoo.com/insights/rankings/top-100-countries-by-game-revenues/ As shown here]], Spain is the biggest Spanish speaking video game market by revenue, being Mexico the only other Spanish speaking country that comes close. The rest are pretty far behind[[/note]]. Plus, the Spaniard dub for the anime was interrupted on 2010, and some Spaniard fans saw the Mexican dub as a sign that Spain would get a dub too, and have the opportunity to listen to the Spaniard voice actors in their roles once again.

* ThatOneAchievement: Getting the achievement for S ranking a story mission is incredibly tedious because of how the ranking system works. Instead it being based off factors like how many specials you used, how many of the optional tasks you can perform in the fight, or other factors like that, it is based almost entirely on how much HP you had left at the end. If you are below roughly 95% percent total HP, then congrats, you aren't getting an S rank even if you only got hit once or twice from a decently powerful attack. Since many story missions have gimmicks to them, it can take a long time of trial and error just to get an S rank.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The removal of the The Ultimate Decision mechanic from ''3'' was criticized by fans of the third game because said mechanic helped make the fights more unique, as it allowed the player to chose an easier or harder mode for the fight, with rewards that appeared for both. Instead there isn't anything of the sort, causing all the fights to be locked to one difficulty.

** After Sasuke arrived on the battlefield in the source material, the Konoha Twelve had a moment where they teamed up and fought their way through the monsters made by the Ten Tails. In game this moment is just skipped over, despite it being a great moment to include from a gameplay perspective, as it could easily have been a level where you fight through hordes of enemies while the other teams jump in and assist, or you play as them. Instead it goes right into Team Seven using their summons.

** Many fans weren't happy when Creator/CyberConnect2 announced that the incarnations of Hinata and Sakura from the {{canon}} movie ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie'' were going to be costumes, instead of new characters like Naruto and Sasuke. This is particularly JustForFun/{{egregious}} because in that film, Hinata was the main female lead and Sakura was an important supporting character, while Sasuke only had a cameo. Toneri, the BigBad in that film, having been confirmed ''not'' to be in the initial game just worsens the blow for some.
