** [[BrokenBase Which season was better, the first or the second one?]] It seems that there are fans who believe that the second half of the novels/second season of the anime is not as good as the first. The first managed to strike a reasonable balance between comedy and seriousness, but the second [[CerebusSyndrome dove full-on into relationship drama]], making for an incredibly heavy and depressing series. On the other hand, there are those who argue that the first season followed a largely episodic format with little story progression, something the second season ditches in favour of an overarching plotline, as well as giving Hachiman some much-needed CharacterDevelopment after he had spent the entirety of the first season as a blatant StaticCharacter, invoked or not. Fans of the second season also often cite Hachiman's [[TearJerker/MyYouthRomanticComedyIsWrongAsIExpected famous scene in S2 episode 8]] is ''the'' primary reason why it's better than the first season. One thing just about everyone can agree on, however, is that between seasons 1 and 2, [[ArtEvolution the art and animation drastically improved]].

* {{Applicability}}: Considering that [[spoiler: Hachiman's main character arc is learning how twisted his worldview is and that he really does wish to have genuine bonds with others]], one could easily argue that the series' ultimate message is that pessimism never did and never will help anyone, and you can't let yourself be defined by the worst parts of your life. In a story that's usually so dark and cynical, this comes off as especially potent.

** The ShowDontTell approach is also rather divisive. Some like the fact that the characters' personalities and beliefs aren't in your face and the series encourages you to figure things out for yourself, which is seen as crucial given that [[UnreliableNarrator Hachiman is clearly shown to be biased in many of his views]]. Others, however, feel that it takes the approach too far to the point of being [[ViewersAreGeniuses excessively vague]] and that such an approach just doesn't work in a romantic drama. Detractors further point out that good relationships are based on clear communication between others and relationships that don't have that can hardly be called "genuine".

** [[BrokenBase Which season was better, the first or the second one?]] It seems that there are fans who have admitted that the second half of the novels/second season of the anime is not as good as the first. The first managed to strike a reasonable balance between comedy and seriousness, but the second [[CerebusSyndrome dove full-on into relationship drama]], making for an incredibly heavy and depressing series. On the other hand, there are also a lot of fans who ''loved'' the second season/second half of the novels for leaning heavily on the dramatic side (though the cutting of the comedy is still a point of contention), stating that ''Oregairu. Zoku!'' is one of the most well-written, and neatly done high school dramas in anime ever, often citing Hachiman's [[TearJerker/MyYouthRomanticComedyIsWrongAsIExpected famous scene in S2 episode 8]] as ''the'' primary proof of why that's so. One thing just about everyone can agree on, however, is that between seasons 1 and 2, [[ArtEvolution the art and animation drastically improved]].

If you're going to say a work broke an aesop, at least clarify what aesop it broke.

** Is Hachiman someone whose Zen-like mentality is something to be inspired by, or is he a petty, narcissistic person who is out of touch with reality? Is he really in search of something genuine as he putright states, or is he just an insecure ClassicalAntiHero who tries to be a sigma male at any cost?

** Yui is either TheTeamNormal who is invaluable in her ability to connect Hachiman and Yukino, or an idiot who lets her feelings take control of her way too easily.

* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Hachiman, ironically enough. Besides his main ships with [[DefrostingIceQueen Yukino]], [[GenkiGirl Yui]], and [[SenpaiKohai Iroha]] (all three of whom are the biggest ones), there're people who ship him with [[HugeSchoolgirl Saki]], (especially for the light novel readers) [[TeacherStudentRomance Hiratsuka-sensei]], [[FoeYayShipping Hayama]], [[GayOption Totsuka]], Yukino's sister [[TheGadfly Haruno]], [[YaoiFangirl Ebina]], [[AlphaBitch Yumiko]], heck, even '''Yui's mom'''.

No playing with YMMV tropes. This is a bunch of contradictions for the example.

* EscapistCharacter: Averted for the male protagonist so far in a harem sense. Somewhat unusual given the genre.
** He is still an escapist character in a Zen way: he gives no damn about the world and calmly lives his existence unhindered by and unhindering nobody. And he makes a strong point to others about his way of life.
** Though the escapism in that is still tampered by the realistic bouts of loneliness he faces due to being something of a social pariah by following his own philosophy (he even lampshades it once or twice). Bouts that come along as often as not (though perhaps it's more frequent in the anime).
** Subverted with Hayato as well. At first, he seems like the ideal EscapistCharacter. He's popular, the ladies love him, talented in sports and academics, and he's a NiceGuy to top it off. But he's actually a BrokenAce and is more flawed than people think.

** Yukino. Is she a MessianicArchetype whose [[AllLovingHero willingness to help people despite the way she is treated by them]] is to be commended? Or is she a hypocrite with an inflated sense of self-worth who sees faults in everyone but herself and often treats them just as poorly, especially in Hachiman's case?

Strangely enough, while most people think more that she's the former, detractors still exists and think she's just a hypocritical, arrogant and self-righteous jerk.
