** While A.J., Dash and Rarity are certainly to blame for not listening to their sisters and taking over the competition, it's arguable if they can really be held responsible for ruining the race for everyone else. The reason they all crashed was because someone had the bright idea of holding the race at a track having multiple roads all intersect at one point. Really, a crash like that could have occurred at any time, regardless of the main characters' actions. Furthermore, there was no other roadway visible.

** Cheerilee, the Crusaders, and their three sister figures each made a significant misfire that caused the wheels to fall off the wagon for the entire derby. Cheerilee's technobabble explanation of the lesson opened the floodgates to a lot of interpretation of the rules. Without missing a beat, the Crusaders headed straight to their respective relations to work on the cart, not thinking about the possibility that they'd do better to work with the pony specializing in their chosen category. And, of course, we've already covered Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack. Taken all together, and factoring in the design of the derby course, the end result was a disaster for all of the racers, even the completely innocent ones.

*** Basically, this episode wouldn't have happened if Rarity, Dash, and AJ acted like themselves. Not to mention they shouldn't have even been allowed to drive the carts as adults, on top of the fact that Rarity's design allowed for blatant cheating. It seems strange that for a race hyped up as so important, Cheerilee and the other ponies in charge didn't care about the rules.

Not YMMV, and Natter.

* BrokenAesop / LostAesop: The moral of the episode was so shoehorned and rushed in at the end that it's kinda hard to figure out what was intended. Adults should listen to kids more often? Adults shouldn't get involved in kids' activities? The events of the episode don't really support either one, since the problem lied less in adults ignoring kids and more in the three spotlighted adults being uncharacteristically mean.

* IdiotBall: Whereas the CMC tend to cause problems in their episodes out of stupidity, it's the adults here who each holds the Ball with a death grip that refuses to let go.

*** Though the CMC brought up their ideas and desires as suggestions before the race and easily backed down when contradicted by the older three. And Rainbow Dash mentions during the lesson scene that she, Applejack, and Rarity could've listened better.
*** Not quite. The way in which each of the CMC went about asking their counterparts varied in odd ways. Scootaloo didn't make her wishes clear at first, and indeed she didn't say much to counter Dash's unwarranted self-indulging. Apple Bloom was decidedly less ambiguous about what she wanted the cart to be like with AJ, who in return pretty much threatened Bloom into letting her do what she wanted with complete disregard for Bloom's input. Then there's Sweetie Belle, who of all ponies was the most outspoken about what she wanted her cart to be like, and yet Rarity seemed to deliberately shove her opinions to the wayside so that she could make her ideal cart.

* IdiotPlot: To avoid every problems, Applebloom could've asked Rainbow Dash to help build her kart (fastest design), Scootaloo could've asked Rarity to build her kart (most creative design), and Sweetie Belle could've asked Applejack to build her kart (most traditional design).
** A major problem was that Applejack, Rainbow, and Rarity were taking over the projects and wouldn't listen to the Crusaders. So, even if Scootaloo, Applebloom, and Sweetie did get the Karts they wanted, all the credit and ideas would have still been from the older siblings. Can you see Scootaloo being happy with the swanmobile Rarity built? Not to mention, they still most likely would have been forced into the passenger seat anyway.
** On the other hoof, the Crusaders might have found more attentive ears had they chosen the most appropriate partners rather than their own big sisters, but how would the writers have arrived at the desired aesop without the older mares falling victim to ItsAllAboutMe?
