* FunnyAneurysmMoment: Spike's take on Bill Cosby's "Chocolate Cake for Breakfast" routine becomes harder to watch after Cosby's numerous rape allegations.

** Peewee's offscreen departure. Some fans were upset at Spike keeping Peewee rather than returning him to his parents and thought this was an AuthorsSavingThrow. Fans who liked the idea of Spike having a pet though view it as TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter.

* UnintentionallySympathetic: Spike's treatment is supposed to be karma for pawning off his responsibilities on others and taking on more than he can handle. Unfortunately, the episode begins with him not being invited back to the Crystal Empire ''[[DudeWheresMyRespect which he helped save]]'', which makes it hard not to feel sorry for him, and led several fans to feel his ButtMonkey treatment was in poor taste. The next season revealing that [[CerebusRetcon he suffers from self-esteem issues]] didn't help.

* WhatAnIdiot: Spike's whole dilemma is essentially caused because he can't control himself when it comes to eating gems. Facepalms are a natural reaction to this.
* TheWoobie: Basically everything that happens to Spike this episode. Though some of his antics with the pets are funny and he eventually learned that he should have been caring for the pets like he promised instead of his cake, it wasn't a good day for the baby dragon. He was not invited to the Crystal Kingdom despite being one of it's saviors and he gets more sad as he has to quickly give up all the gems he got just to get him out of trouble.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Was Angel avoiding Spike because he wanted to see Fluttershy or was he afraid Owlowiscious [[FurryReminder might eat him]]?

* TheScrappy: Angel, who wavers as one to the fanbase, was more or less confirmed as an InUniverse example for the rest of the pets, who hate his bad attitude as much as Spike does..

* ShipTease:
** [[InterspeciesRomance Opal and Tank's]] interactions with each other.
** Cheerilee and Big Macintosh can be seen walking together, and apparently going for a picnic.
** Golden Harvest and Written Script are hugging on the station.

It doesn't help that [[SkewedPriorities she leaves Spike to handle the pets alone afterwards]], the problem he wanted her to help with in the first place.

* JerkassWoobie: Angel when his reason for going to the Crystal Empire is made clear: he just wants to see Fluttershy again. Spike denies him the opportunity by causing a distraction with his last gem. It's hard not to feel bad for Angel, although he gives Spike a hard time. Somewhat justified when Spike doesn't even remove the curls on his tail until after he learned his lesson.

** Fans are even divided on Zecora's role in this episode. Though this got a largely accepted AuthorsSavingThrow the following season, where it seems she wanted to keep the statue being built of him a surprise for when he actually came to the games, and we find out he's regarded as a LivingLegend in the Crystal Empire.

* TheScrappy:
** There have been some bronies that started disliking Cadence because Spike wasn't invited to the games (despite him being, more or less, the sole SpannerInTheWorks that causes Sombra's plan to fail).
** Angel, who wavers as one to the fanbase, was more or less confirmed as an InUniverse example for the rest of the pets, who hate his bad attitude as much as Spike does..
