* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation - Emily is either a heterosexual girl attracted to Ash but unable to go further in their relationship because [[GenderBender Ash is currently a girl]] OR a lesbian/bisexual in denial who simply doesn't want to accept that she's attracted to another girl. Which interpretation of her character you believe depends upon which side of the [[ShipToShipCombat shipping war]] you fall on.

* AntiClimaxBoss - Out of the racers Ash has faced so far, Sheldon seems to have been the easiest to beat. That could just be because of all the lead up though.
* {{Anvilicious}} - While Chris is usually pretty good about it, there are [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=129 a few strips]] that make it more than clear that Ash's character is supposed to be read as a [=FtM transsexual=], and that everything he goes through is supposed to drive home AnAesop about accepting transsexuals, except for the ones that are supposed to drive home AnAesop about accepting homosexuals.

* DesignatedMonkey: Rumisiel gets so much crap, sometimes it makes you forget his incompetence and negligence obliterated two people's identities.
** Cassiel, it's heavily suggested that she regularly gets the short end of the stick from ThePowersThatBe, possibly because of her uncle.
* DesignatedVillain - Heather, of TheResenter variety. Though later strips show she ''does'' have positive qualities as well, so it's kind of a {{Deconstruction}}.
* DieForOurShip - Some fans consider Missi TheScrappy depending on how much attention she's paying to Ash.
* DudeNotFunny - Cassiel's treatment of Heather at the pajama party split the fanbase with half declaring CrowningMomentOfFunny and the other half declaring this.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Kamikaze Kate.

* EvilIsSexy - The [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=290 traditional evil conscience female uniform]], Cassiel.
* FanonDiscontinuity - Subverted. Despite repeated WordOfGod to the contrary some readers insist that Ash was only convinced she was once male by the misfile because nothing contradicting this interpretation has ever appeared ''within the comic itself'' where it would undermine the fundamental premise underlying the story. Presumably the WordOfGod will be redeemed at the comic's conclusion but discontinuity cannot exist in the absence of continuity and dramatic integrity sometimes requires an author to leave sufficient room for misinterpretation.
* FunnyAneurysmMoment - Rumisiel's line from very early on, "Enjoy all the extra time you've got", takes on a whole new meaning once you learn that without the misfile, Emily would be DEAD.
* GameBreaker - Ash's Monster XR, which is so wickedly over-the-top for a high school street racer that it must remain parked, lest it suck all of the dramatic tension out of the storyline and threaten her underdog status.
* HarsherInHindsight - [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=417 In this strip]], after Emily's mother tried to persuade Emily that she shan't associate with Ash because he (or rather "[[GenderBender she]]", from Emily's mother's perspective) was sleeping around (having overheard parts of Emily's earlier conversation with Ash) with other men, Emily replied that Ash only did it once and was so off-put by it "she" wanted to never let another man touch her, and her mother voiced her concern about whether Ash's experience was rape and if she was okay. Just a moment of awesomeness for Emily for being able to put her overbearing mother down, right? Except not, as the story progresses further it becomes apparent that the misfile did leave Ash feeling violated and scared, and it is very likely that at that moment he really felt raped.
* HollywoodHomely - [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=875 Missi]] is supposed to be flat-chested. Of course if it were drawn too subtly, you couldn't see her breasts at all… which is apparently not the point.
** She wears padded bras most of the time
* MemeticBadass - Doris became popular on the forums after her first (and at the time of this writing, only) appearance.

* MisaimedFandom: Many fans can't understand why Ash would ever want to be male again.

* OT3 - The series is now having Ash, Emily, and Missi hanging together ''so'' much that this has begun to enter the minds of several followers.

* PeripheryDemographic - Misfile seems to attract readers who don't typically like GenderBender stories because it deconstructs or inverts the usual GenderBender tropes. Crosses over into MisaimedFandom with Christians attracted by the whole angel thing despite the heavy [[HoYay lesbian subtext.]]
* RecycledScript - One of the complaints about the series is that stories where Ash has to remember he is no longer a boy kept being re-used and none of the lessons he learns seem to [[AesopAmnesia take effect.]]

* ShipToShipCombat - How many comics have fans argue over the ''same pairing?'' (male Ash/Emily vs. female Ash/Emily)

* UnpopularPopularCharacter: Many fans feel that Rumisiel gets too much crap from the cast.
** Which is ironic, because the guy himself believes he deserves it - the flaws his brother and Dr. Upton point out are quite evidently there. More importantly, it's Ash and Emily who gave him the most crap because he upturned their lives (especially Ash, who's understandably having an IdentityCrisis thanks to the misfile). Additionally, later books have shown Ash and Rumisiel are reaching a kind of understanding, anyway.
* {{Wangst}} - Much of the comic finely treads the line, but so far it hasn't really stepped over.
* {{The Woobie}} - Rumisiel and Ash take turns; Emily, when she's fighting with her mother. Aiden to some. And Missi has recently had even the haters wanting a plushie to hug and comfort.

* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnFemale - Missi molesting Ash is usually played for laughs, although the party in book 15 points out the hypocrisy by juxtaposing it with Colin hitting on Heather.

In other words, discontinuity cannot exist in the absence of continuity, and there can be little doubt that this is intentional because the author has deliberately passed up every opportunity to explicitly refute this theory within the story itself. Doing so would undermine the fundamental premise of cosmic RetCon underlying the entire comic. Maintaining dramatic integrity sometimes requires authors to leave space for some EpilepticTrees

* FanonDiscontinuity - Despite WordOfGod [[http://www.napalmluck.com/index.php?showtopic=5082&st=0&p=223659&#entry223659 saying otherwise,]] many readers insist that Ash was always female and the Misfile has confused her into thinking she used to be male.

* ArbitrarySkepticism: Angels? Okay. Ghosts? Why not? People's lives affected by changes in files? I'll give you that one. But a guy who can talk to cars? Get outta here…
** To be fair the guy looks normal and cars talking back isn't exactly related to ghosts or angels.

**** You're misremembering. The guy that talks to cars is Aiden, and the guy that can see angels is Logan. They're both pretty minor characters though, so it's an easy mistake to make.

* UnfortunateImplications: Interestingly ''not'' relevant to the comic now, but the early stages of the comic were nonetheless prone to ocassional humor at Ash's expense, mocking transsexuals' actual angst at some superficially trivial issues. The problem arises in that the ads for the series still echo back to this era, so trying to convince someone outside the series that the comic is actually respectful to transsexuals is difficult.

* CompletelyMissingThePoint - Many fans can't understand why Ash would ever want to be male again.
** Missi badgers Ash into answering why Ash prefers to be around Emily and gets her answer in that Missi is overly aggressive sexually and Ash hates that. Missi takes this to mean she needs to continue this behaviour so Ash can be the same way.
** A recent story looked like it would finally resolve the Ash and Emily romance when it the subject was suddenly dropped and the scene changed. The fans got enraged at how poorly this scene was resolved and how stagnant the series was becoming, so Chris decided to write a post commenting that... we shouldn't be so upset that Ash and Emily didn't get together in that moment.

* EvilIsSexy - The [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=290 traditional evil conscience female uniform]], Cassiel.
* FillerArc - Book 13. It doesn't contribute to anything over all and Ash learns a lesson he learnt back in book four.

* InformedAttractiveness: Ash's mom is supposed to be a supermodel, but just looks like [[OnlySixFaces every single other woman in the series]].

* StatusQuoIsGod: A frequent recent complaint among long time followers of the comic is how slow and ponderous the story has become, and how reluctant it is to take any risks. It hints frequently as a larger background plot, despite this though, it has been rooted in mundane issues for several volumes now.
