* AngstAversion: The film was severely disliked by some women viewers due to [[spoiler:Maggie's paralysis and death]], as the film's pre-release publicity gave no hint of the tragic ending and made it look like an inspiring women's sport movie.

* TrueArtIsAngsty: Andrew Sarris of the ''New York Observer'' said that "...no movie in my memory has depressed me more than Million Dollar Baby." The movie won 4 Oscars including Best Picture.

* {{Narm}}: Maggie's family are such over-the-top redneck stereotypes that it can be hard to take them seriously.

* TearJerker: One of the most depressing and heartwrenching Clint Eastwood stories.
** And the icing on the tearjerking cake is [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9nmW-WL-Zrg is this piece of music that plays during the end credits.]]

Cleanup. Scrappy must be unintentionally hated. This is all intentional.

* TheScrappy: Billie the '''''friggin'''''' Blue Bear. Oh, brother. She was being unnecessarily rough towards Maggie during their match, and ends up [[spoiler:being the direct, albeit unintentional, cause of having Maggie crippled for the rest of the film.]] It is unknown what happened to Billie after that event, but ''such an action'' not only [[spoiler:disqualifies her from the match, possibly either for the rest of the season or ''permanently'', but that's a '''one-way ticket''' to anger-management therapy!]]

If it was successful/well-received, TBSC does not apply as audiences did like it despite.

* TooBleakStoppedCaring: The tone starts out dark and only gets bleaker as the movie goes on. Nearly everyone in this movie is horrible. Maggie’s mother is an [[EntitledBastard Entitled]] LazyBum who refuses to show an ounce of gratitude when Maggie buys her a ''house.'' The rest of her family is just as bad and shows no sympathy to her [[spoiler:being a quadriplegic]]. The boxing gym is filled with Jerkasses who find amusement in beating up a ''mentally disabled kid''. Maggie’s final opponent is a remorseless cheater who illegally punches Maggie after the round ends purely out of spite, [[spoiler:causing Maggie's paralysis (admittedly unintentionally). The paralysis itself is absolutely heartbreaking, with Maggie being unable to move anything below her neck, having to have a leg amputated due to bedsores, and kept under constant sedation after attempting suicide.]] It’s no wonder Andrew Sarris of the ''New York Observer'' said that “...no movie in my memory has depressed me more than Million Dollar Baby.”
* TrueArtIsAngsty: As mentioned on the main page, the movie won 4 Oscars including Best Picture.
* TheWoobie: Maggie. Oh, dear God.
** Also goes for poor ol' [[Creator/JayBaruchel Danger Barch]]; all he wanted to do was become a prize fighter...

* UnfortunateImplications: The film caught a lot of flak from advocacy groups for the disabled, who claimed that it condones [[spoiler: euthanizing paralyzed people]], and that its ultimate message is [[spoiler: "life with a physical disability isn't worth living"]]. A few reviewers [[http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/005/307qsmui.asp claimed that it would have been a better movie if it had ended with]] [[spoiler: Maggie learning to cope with her disability and getting an education]].
