* CrowningMomentofAwesome: So many in just one game...
** Taking down Metal Gears is always awesome, [[spoiler: but taking down Metal Gear Zeke to Koi no Yokushiryoku, instead of the typical electronic music was pretty damned sweet.]]
** [[spoiler: The "Head to the Control Tower" mission, blasting though a army of Elite Soliders and Kidnappers, a 3 part Tunnel section, all ending in a full on fight with more Soldiers and a Helicopter. This is the best part of the mission though, as while you fighting the Soliders + Helicopter, [[CrowningMusicOfAwesome Heaven's Divide]] starts to play, and you know with that playing, you feel more pumped to win this battle.]]
*** [[spoiler: The real kicker is going outside at the start, even though Miller says it's suicide, and getting on the mounted machine gun. ''YOU CAN'T GET HIT USING IT''. Time to go {{Rambo}}.]]
*** And to make it even better, [[spoiler:the mission ends with things getting tight for Snake, up 'til when the Sanadistas arrive, gunning down all the enemies in one of the best BigDamnHeroes moments in the whole series. Cue to Amanda finally being recognized as "Comandante", and after she hugs Big Boss, everyone starts cheering for him.]] It's '''''such''''' a moment of glory.
** Mixed with CrowningMusicOfAwesome, the background music while you fight [[spoiler:Peace Walker is also another one that really pumps you and fills you with determination to win the freaking battle. Though you'd better have some friends to do it, or [[MarathonBoss it'll take a good half-hour to beat]].]]
** The QTE at the end of Infiltrate the Underground Base. The prompts are so fast it's borderline impossible to avoid losing (and continuing to the next mission), but Big Boss' CQC FoeTossingCharge is totally worth it.
* CrowningMomentOfFunny - Chico often irritates Snake. Then he asks him to talk like Trenya, the talking cat.
---> "Uh... Meow...? Meow... Meow meow meow..."
---> "Wow... I have no idea what you're talking about!"
** Quite a few of the briefing files are like this. Highlights include Snake and Miller talking about cardboard boxes, Snake talking to Huey about NORAD, and any time Miller's trying to get Cecile's attention.
*** '''BIG BOSS BELIEVES SANTA IS REAL.''' Huey laughs at him and mocks him for it. Unfortunately, a lot of the soldiers also believe Santa is real.
**** Maybe because [[MerryGearSolid Santa was his brother?]]
** Kaz is flabbergastered at Snake thinking a cardboard tank that actually works is practical. Paz... ''loves it.'' Mostly because it's eco-friendly.
** If you Fulton up soldiers when Mother Base is at its population limit, Kaz calls you surrounded by crowded soldiers. "Hey, stop pushing!"
** Paz's Diary, Entry Six. See MemeticMolester below.
** If you're fighting a MonsterHunter boss, call Cecile: "Here, let me try and talk to it. -ahem- RAWR! RAAWWWRR!"
** Losing Extra Ops 67 - Date With Paz. [[spoiler:"Creep!" -stamps away- "Paz, wait! I'M SORRY! I DIDN'T MEAN TO- Paz! PAAAAAAZ!!!!!!!!"]] Rarely, various characters will sing the game over theme if you lose the mission in your underwear.
** The Railgun. Just.. the Railgun.
** Formula for Funny: Start a level wearing Swim Trunks. Spam your radio. Watch Miller freak out and Amanda lecture you.
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: Wouldn't be a Metal Gear game without them. Examples include the Main Theme "Heaven's Divide" and Koi no Yokushiryoku (Love Deterrence, Paz's theme). What makes them more awesome is that, like in past games, they play as certain parts in the game, Heaven's Divide is played in the mentioned part above, while Koi no Yokushiryoku is played [[spoiler: as Paz's battle theme when she hijacks ZEKE]]. This is a different change of music from past games, [[spoiler:seeing as how you are fighting a friend (or at least someone with second thoughts), and not a enemy. What's make it special is that this was what she was supposed to sing during the annual MSF day of peace.]]
** The quiet piano version of "Snake Eater" also qualifies. It's a good callback to the [[MetalGearSolid3 game of the same name]], the part of the game where the flashback scenes tend to take place (it plays "Snake Eater" if you take too long), and in general has sort of a wistful, flashbacky feel to it.
* CrazyAwesome: You can take over entire enemy bases in a ''swimsuit'' and armed only with a [[WithThisHerring banana.]]
** Then you can beat up angry dinosaurs with World War Two/Cold War guns.
** And THEN you and your buddy can hop into a cardboard box ''tank'' and start running around shooting up enemies with the cardboard cannon.
** And on top of that, you can hurl ALLIES at tanks with the human slingshot, destroying the target in a peace symbol firecracker storm.

* GoddamnBats: Kidnappers, tiny flying robots that can shoot machine guns at you or, if close enough, latch onto your leg with a grippy claw on a cable. They're never a serious threat head-on, but they're ''just'' distracting enough that they make facing tougher opponents much more dangerous, because while you're hanging in the air trying to get down, everyone else is shooting you. They get extremely annoying during the infiltration of the Missile Base - chaffing or shooting down one causes a caution mode. And they're placed in areas where you can't really hide unless you've got a box... and even then, it's a wait. They're also much more mobile than previous [=UAVs=] in the series.
** Armored Peace Sentinel soldiers during custom vehicle battles. On their own, with just machine guns or assault rifles? Fine. But at higher difficulties? They start blowing you away with rapid succession rocket fire, practically playing hackey-sack with Snake's body using explosions.
** The damn Velociprey in most of the MonsterHunter missions. Not allowing you to reload? Getting in your way of firing potshots at the bosses? Leaping on you at the most inopportune times, knocking you down just as the boss is about to do something stupid? Just being an annoying part of the bosses? ''At least'' they let you cook up your rations. The funny thing is, they're faithful to their roles in MonsterHunter - being annoying pricks.

* RecycledPremise: The main character is called out allegedly to save a location from invading forces/a terrorist group, only for it to become apparent that there were ulterior motives from the people who sent the main character, to recreate a legendary hero to further control the populace, only for that to be revealed to actually be a front for a far more sinister objective involving human control? Oh, and the main villain for most of the plot up to a certain point also had a direct hand in manipulating one of the previous events in the series? Sounds a heck of a lot like MetalGearSolid2's plot.

* IKnewIt: [[spoiler: "So wait, at the "endgame" the question of the discrepancy between Cecile and Paz stories concerning their capture by the CIA and the origin of the tape Vlad used to assure Big Boss's involvement still hasn't been answered? One of them isn't telling the truth... now which one is the ''least'' likely to be a traitor...?"]]
* [[MemeticMolester Memetic Molestee]] - Paz's diary reveals Strangelove groped her under the guise of applying suntan. (Strangelove nearly fainted.) Then she gets a cold, and then Kaz tries to serenade her, and then exclaims that suppositories are good for colds... and then takes off his pants. And after that, Strangelove comes by with an "Indian remedy" that you rub on your chest.
* MoeMoe - Paz, the ''cutest'' girl in the franchise since Emma Emmerich. ImTakingHerHomeWithMe!!
* PlayerPunch: [[spoiler: In a cruel twist, The Boss's horse must be euthanised by the player while also shooting The Boss again in a flashback, ''one right after the other''.]]
** [[spoiler:Also, how you destroy the Mammal Pod. Basically you go inside her and pull out all the AI memory boards, listening to a progressively deteriorating voice of The Boss. To put this in human terms, you're going inside her brain and ripping chunks out of it until she's compleatly lobotomized. Yeesh...]]
* ParanoiaFuel: [[spoiler: In Paz/Pacifica Ocean's 10th audio diary, she mentions that there is a second Cipher agent undercover in Mother Base. She doesn't say who, and she also hints that even she doesn't even know who the second Cipher agent is. Happy guessing, fellow tropers!]]
** [[spoiler: It's hinted to be Miller in the aftermath of the Paz battle, and then confirmed in the final unlockable data file "The Phone Call". However, the accuracy of the term "agent" is debatable as he makes it clear in the call that he has no intention of actually siding with Cipher as much as simply work with them as a "business partner" with the intention of expanding MSF as long as they don't try to do anything that risks MSF's existence, something he also hinted to Snake in the ending.]]

However, Peace Walker builds on virtually every aspect of the game and pretty much blows Portable Ops out of the water.

If that wasn't enough, they also require a ''very'' '''LONG''' time to develop, too.
