* ItsEasySoItSucks: The NES version removes the high alert phases from the [=MSX2=] (which happens when two exclamation marks appears above an enemy's head instead of just one), making it easier to escape after being discovered by simply moving to the next screen. The Super Computer boss is also a lot easier than the Metal Gear, since the player aren't required to memorize where to place their plastic explosives.
** On the other hand, there's no MercyInvincibility in the NES version, and since many of the early areas (especially the Jungle and the first floor of Building No. 1) consists of really tight corridors, it's easy to be stampeded to death by watchdogs and enemy soldiers. Likewise, the NES version also feature instant shortcuts to later areas, so novices are bound to get lost if they take a transport truck without knowing where it leads.

It also removes the MercyInvincibility when Snake gets hit, allowing enemy soldiers to bull-rush Snake into an easy defeat. On the other hand, the high alert phase (which occurs when two exclamation marks appear over an enemy's head instead of just one) was removed from the NES version, making enemies easier to escape from by simply moving onto the next screen, while several bugs and glitches were also added that actually makes the game easier in some instances (such as the fact that the player can skip Super Computer room and go straight to the final boss).

However, all the thin walls in the game can be destroyed without it, making it a rather useless item. !! The first game:
* SequelDisplacement: Most players began the series with ''MetalGearSolid'' and the few people that played the actual original most likely played the NES port, unaware of its origin as an [=MSX2=] game.
* {{Woolseyism}}: The American manual for the NES version notably gives a completely different account towards the events of the story than what is actually shown in-game. This also acts as one of the few instances where fans actually hated the concept of Woosleyization.

* ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch: One of the most common claims by the {{Hatedom}} is that Hideo Kojima takes his world of carboard boxes, cyborg ninjas, and bisexual vampires "too seriously". This instantly marks them out as not having played any significant portion of any Metal Gear game, ever.

* CrowningMomentOfAwesome - So very many; in ''[=MGS4=]'' [[spoiler: Metal Gear REX vs. Metal Gear RAY. And it's PLAYABLE.]]
** ''[=MGS4=]'' actually had several, including [[spoiler:the Raiden/Vamp battle, the aforementioned HumongousMecha battle, and the final battle against Liquid]], which devolves awesomely from [[spoiler:two skilled and powerful fighters with incredibly fluid attacks]] to [[spoiler:two old men slugging each other because that's all they have left]]. Oh, and [[spoiler: the microwave hallway.]]
*** And one can't forget Raiden [[spoiler:fighting off a legion of Liquid Ocelot's elite troopers '''''after he lost both his arms'''''.]]
*** And the one where Johnny and Meryl [[spoiler:take turns proposing to each other and discuss their wedding plans.]] ''[[WackyMarriageProposal In the middle of a damn firefight.]]''
*** The motorcycle scene in Eastern Europe. Mixed with the voice acting and awesome music by Harry Gregson-Williams, it gives me chills every time.
** From the first game, Fox's fight with Rex, Snake rappelling down a tower to escape the Hind, Vulcan Raven, etc. Seriously, the series has a roughly one-to-one ratio between [=CMOAs=] and [[MindScrew mindscrews]].
* CrowningMomentOfFunny: The codec calls can yield alot of this, especially in Snake Eater. Also, the cardboard boxes are this as well - see CrazyAwesome above. The enemies are incredibly stupid for never getting suspicious over a cardboard box that appears out of nowhere for absolutely no reason!!
* CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming: [[spoiler:Big Boss's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5qV4GRpNdM CQC hug]] with Snake towards the end of ''[=MGS4=]''.]] The rest of the scene qualifies as both this and a decent TearJerker.
** [[spoiler: Additionally, plays with WellDoneSonGuy, by having Big Boss tell Snake point-blank that he never considered him his son, but held him in high regard as a soldier. [[ItMakesSenseInContext In the context of the series]], it is rather touching.]]
