* FunnyAneurysmMoment: Nanachi's LethalChef tendencies are initially PlayedForLaughs especially in comparison to her otherwise vast survival skills, but it becomes a lot less funny after it's revealed [[spoiler:she's a mostly normal orphan no older than the main characters whose skillset is entirely what she came by fending for herself and Mitty in the deep layers of the abyss after escaping from Bondrewd, and she never had the instruction or opportunity to learn how to cook properly.]]

* CreepyAwesome: All White Whistles who have been introduced or named so far have also been portrayed starkly compared to the other whistles, with ominous silhouettes and epithets as well as dark concealing outfits. Besides Lyza, there is [[spoiler:[[SuperStrength Ozen the Immovable]], [[PlagueDoctor Srajo the Lord of Mystery]], [[TeleportersAndTransporters Wakuna the Lord of Guidance]], and of course [[MadScientist Bondrewd]] the Lord of [[ForScience Dawn]].]] Even Lyza, who is comparatively the brightest and most normal looking White Whistle, is sometimes portrayed in a creepy fashion befitting her violent epithet, with her aptly named pickaxe relic Blaze Reap invoking the scythe of the Grim Reaper.

** [[spoiler:Bondrewd putting all his children (Which he has dozens of) in horrifying experiments turning them all into an EldritchAbomination for the sake on exploring the Abyss takes him to this trope almost immediately]]. The elevator scene was pretty particular of this as he manipulates Mitty and Nanachi to take the strain of the Curse and because they're in an elevator Nanachi is pretty much ForcedToWatch their best friend suffer AFateWorseThanDeath.

* DracoInLeatherPants: Many people like to downplay the atrocities of [[spoiler:Bondrewd]] and slap him with a pair of these, claiming he's not ''that'' bad of a father and he truly does love his children. While it's true [[spoiler:Bondrewd]] is a morally-rounded character who truly does seem to love Nanachi if his parting words are anything to go by, people seem to forget he [[spoiler:put Nanachi and dozens of his other children through ''horrific'' experimentation to further his own ambitions on exploring the Abyss, stealing their humanity and reducing many of them to horrible monstrosities, and he shows not a shred of remorse for it.]] On the other hand, a lot of it tends to be done in a rather tongue-in-cheek way. This... creature ([[spoiler:he's not even really a human man anymore by the time the main characters meet him]]) is so reprehensible in his actions that [[spoiler:[[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Shou Tucker's]]]] sins pale in comparison. Both present themselves as loving father figures who put their dedication to science above their family and end up using their "children" as ingredients in awful experiments. The meme culture around Bondrewd and the CrossesTheLineTwice way the fandom treats his abhorrent acts is also extremely reminiscent of Shou's memetic status.
** Apart from Shou Tucker, Bondrewd is also frequently compared to [[Manga/{{GUNNM}} Desty Nova]], having the same cheerfully charismatic outlook, [[BlueAndOrangeMorality total lack of any semblance of (recognizable) morals]], crapload of cool abilities/artifacts, [[AwesomenessByAnalysis razor-sharp intellect]] and [[TheUnfettered complete absence of qualms]] in their quest ForScience.
** ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''. Grim subversion of a usually kid-friendly genre (complete with ArtStyleDissonance)? Check. What seems like a lifestyle of high-spirited adventure turns out to be ''much'' more dangerous? Check. [[spoiler:[[TheUnfettered Unfettered]] BlueAndOrangeMorality villain draws in down-on-their-luck children with promises of better things and (eventually) turns them into demented monsters for [[TheNeedsOfTheMany the greater good]]?]] CheckPlease. Taken even further in that [[spoiler:Mitty and Sayaka Miki]] were both played by Creator/EriKitamura. Topping it off, a squirrel-like creature in the opening video somewhat resembles Kyubey, and a race of birdlike creatures exists in the series called "Madokajacks".
