Since his chief nemesis is also a man with a distorted voice and mask, uninitiated audiences may briefly think that Immortan Joe is Max himself after a TimeSkip.

He has a similar role in ''Beyond Thunderdome'' with the politics of Bartartown taking center stage while he is a SupportingProtagonist throughout it all.

Discussion.

* BrokenBase: In spite of the critical acclaim and approval from audiences, there's a debate on whether or not the title character got enough screentime and/or CharacterDevelopment compared to Furiosa and the Wives, who are seen by some as a SpotlightStealingSquad. The group who feels that Max was cheated out of screentime can get [[InternetBackdraft pretty volatile]].
