* TearJerker: Camille breaking down in tears after having just witnessed her father being whisked away by the nightmarish essence. It really drives home just how badly Nemo has messed up. [[spoiler:Her grief comes back to bite her toward the end when she (almost) loses Nemo to his HeroicSacrifice and becomes saddened along with everyone else. Thankfully her father steps in and brings him BackFromTheDead.]]

* SoOkayItsAverage: The movie holds a special place for many of those who grew up with it, but the overall consensus is it's a mixed bag. Most of the criticism is directed at the SlowPacedBeginning that's overly childish and saccharine. It is often agreed the movie would have been a lot better if the conflict was introduced much earlier rather than halfway through, as its best moments are all after the Nightmare King is released and everyone enters Nightmareland. The animation and music however are both unanimously considered incredible, even during the lackluster first half.

* UglyCute: The Boomps, who are basically a weird combination of fur and blob monsters with faces that vaguely resemble that of old men, but are so friendly and endearing that one couldn't help but find them adorable, nonetheless. The exceptions are Oompo (the biggest Boomp, who resembles a BigFriendlyDog), and Oompy (the smallest, who simply looks like a cuddly teddy bear) since it's obvious they were deliberately designed to be seen as cute.

The rules of Fridge Horror do not allow statements such as "It would be scary if other stuff happened."

* FridgeHorror: What would happen if the scepter caused Nemo to die in his dream? Would he simply wake up, or would he die in real life too? Does this operate on Freddy Krueger logic?

Example relies on a superfluous reviewer reference and Weasel Words.

* NightmareRetardant: For some viewers, like the WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic, the Nightmare King's legitimately imposing and threatening design is undercut by his fairly unintimidating voice.

"Idiot Plot" is now Flame Bait.

* IdiotPlot: Hoo boy. This trope being present could be excused by the story (probably) taking place in a little boy's dreams, but if Nemo had kept his darn promise not to open one particular door, then he'd have saved the kingdom a lot of grief. Going backwards a step, King Morpheus could have been the one to save the kingdom some grief by not entrusting a little kid he just met with a key to the kingdom - or at the very least telling him why he shouldn't open the door. Taking things back even further, King Morpheus could have simply chosen his own daughter to hold the key, instead of recruiting some random boy from the real world.

* AllAnimationIsDisney: Given how TMS Entertainment has worked on several of Disney's 80s animated TV shows (such as WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfTheGummiBears, WesternAnimation/Ducktales and WesternAnimation/TheNewAdventuresOfWinnieThePooh) and thus gave the movie a lush Disneyesque feel to the animation, and how Music/TheShermanBrothers wrote the songs, this movie can somewhat be easily mistaken for a Disney production (though not as much as Creator/DonBluth's work or other American-made animated films of the time). This is especially notable since the Nightmare King (who did not exist in the comic strip and was created for the film) looks like a ReusedCharacterDesign of Chernabog from WesternAnimation/Fantasia with horns given to him.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Since no one in the real world comments on Icarus (a flying squirrel wearing airplane goggles that can almost speak English), but he plays a role in Nemo's dream, are we to believe he is a product of Nemo's overactive imagination? An ImaginaryFriend? Or is he a resident of Slumberland that can somehow travel between the dream realm and the real world, who only Nemo can see?

Moved to their own page.

* NightmareFuel: It would have done Tim Burton proud. It can be rather amusing in retrospect that Nightmare Land, where all nightmares come from, can be considered NightmareFuel. Or: A fictional world responsible for all nightmares in a fictional Earth is also responsible for nightmares in the real world.
** Nemo's nightmare of the train at the beginning most definitely is this in its rawest form.
** The nighmarish essence that Nemo accidentally lets loose when it kidnaps King Morpheus. It most definitely will keep your kids up at night.
** After Nemo's first time experiencing a Catapult Nightmare, he finds the Royal Scepter and starts hearing the almost ghostly sound of King Morpheus's voice coming from somewhere in his house. Going downstairs to find it, he sees a glow coming from the kitchen, where the note stating "Remember your promise" regarding his sneaking pies in the middle of the night changes to the symbol of the key he was given before flooding the house with water. It's a particularly chilling scene and can be reminiscent of dreams that sometimes leave you feeling your own home isn't safe either.
** The batlike creatures that kidnap Nemo's friends and carry them off into the night as he is totally helpless to defend them. It certainly brings the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz to mind.

* CrossCulturalKerfluffle: Having been produced in Japan, the filmmakers clearly were clueless that the character Flip looking just like a black-faced minstrel (even though faithful to Creator/WinsorMcCay's original work) would be extremely problematic for modern international audiences. Series/SiskelAndEbert even pointed this out in their review, as did WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic who refers to him as "the Franchise/Turtles MinstrelShow". They at least had the foresight not to include Imp, a much more blatant racial caricature from the comic, while Flip could at least be explained away as a clown or humanoid frog with his green skin.

** To be charitable, maybe they need someone from the "real"/waking world for one reason or another? It could be something that happens every few generations or so. Camille just ended up loosing out on the succession lottery. But they definitely should have been more cautious with the handing off of the key. THAT should have been given to the princess.
