** David Madsen is a downplayed case in comparison to the other two as he's not a villain, but the fans (mostly the ones who have a bone to pick with Chloe) tend to understate the fact that he was a bit of a bastard he was through much of the story. While he is ultimately right that something far more sinister is going on, [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter his original conclusions are so completely and totally wrong, it borders on complete incompetence]] [[note]]More specifically, he takes the viral video of Kate at face value and believes she's in on whatever the Vortex Club is doing (she's not and has in fact been asking the teachers for help to stop the bullying she has been receiving from them) and when she begins to breakdown from his harassment, he believes she is the one selling drugs at the school. While he's obviously not as responsible Nathan or [[spoiler:Jefferson]], his vicious bullying of Kate (even more so than any of the other students) was defiantly a leading cause for [[spoiler:Kate's attempted suicide]]. On the other hand, he takes Nathan's word (the one actually selling drugs at school mind you) over Kate's and potentially Max's despite the fact that episode 4 confirms he saw Nathan attack Max and Warren back in episode one.[[/note]]. Also, while Chole is admittedly very far from an ideal stepdaughter, the fact that he hits Chole if Max doesn't come out and take the blame for the weed shows that she's right about him being an AbusiveParent (though in fairness, [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone he is immediately horrified that he did that and takes it as a wake call that he needs therapy]]). While he truly does love Chole and at his core means well, with his [[spoiler:[[BigDamnHeroes rescue of Max in episode 5]]]] serving as a redemptive moment, his "investigation" does as much and possibly more harm than good.

** While Warren can be uncomfortably awkward and is rather [[DoggedNiceGuy persistent regarding his crush on Max]], he's a good person overall and [[UndyingLoyalty will always be good friend to Max]] [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy even if the player decides to have Max pursue Chloe.]] This doesn't always apply in fanfics, where he's often ignored or vilified, with some even going so far as to make him [[spoiler:one of Mr. Jefferson's accomplices]].

* EsotericHappyEnding: While both endings are bittersweet to varying degrees, the ending in which Max chooses to allow Chloe to die to stop the storm from destroying the town seems to be intended as the "better" of the two and is definitely the one the developers put more effort into. Players on the other hand often have a great deal of criticisms of it, pointing out what while more characters explicitly survive in this ending and Jefferson and Nathan are busted, as far as anyone can tell, Arcadia Bay is still a DyingTown run like a fiefdom by Nathan's amoral real estate mogul father, Chloe dies alone and unloved at her absolute lowest point (with the last words she ever hears being "Nobody would miss your punk ass!"), and Max has lost the love of her life and/or best friend, may be traumatized for years, if not for life, and has essentially learned the heartwarming message that going on her adventure in the first place made everything worse.

** The reason why Chloe is such a BaseBreakingCharacter lies with this issue. Her life understandably sucks, but there's only so much a FreudianExcuse can justify before you roll around into {{Wangst}} territory. Chloe repeatedly takes advantage of Max, instigates most of the arguments between her and David, and her abandonment issues cause her to guilt trip nearly everyone around her without being self-aware or really developing. As a result, rather than being a nuanced character, to detractors, she's a borderline HateSink who the game pushes heavily as a "complex character".

* UnintentionallySympathetic: The ending of the game sends an incredibly harsh message; that a queer poor girl who has been abandoned, neglected and abused ultimately finds out that [[spoiler: the universe itself thinks the world is better off without her.]] Considering how many kids like Chloe really do get harsh treatment and neglect in real life, it's hard for people who identify with her not to feel like the ending is a gut punch. And it doesn't help that the game heavily implies that [[spoiler:Max is selfish for just wanting to be with the person she loves.]]
