** Happy's talked up by the commentary as being on Shooter's level for the final tournament during the preamble. The viewers know why that is, given the special training he received. However, as far as the common in-universe person knows Happy's claims to fame are his long drives and beat up with Bob Barker, but not necessarily a top performance at competitions. So why would he be being talked up now?

Added DiffLines:

** The main thing about the product placement is that it's mostly PlayedForLaughs, what with the, on purpose, stilted acting from Happy in the commercial on Sandler's part and blatantness of it coming off more as a parody of the situation. Plus the situation resulting in it made it a logical move in terms of the plot, making it a bit more natural than the in-your-face laziness that his later films would employ.

* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: When appropriate, the score switches to something like "Money (That's What I Want)" by Barrett Strong, enough to warrant a credit during the ending crawl.

** Shooter [=McGavin=]'s over-the-top [[SmugSnake smarminess]] has seen him become a pretty beloved comedy movie villain.

* GrowingTheBeard: For Adam Sandler. Although his first major lead movie, ''Film/BillyMadison'', was a modest hit, it was also a pretty thin movie that needed multiple [[BigLippedAlligatorMoment BLAMs]] just to fill its scant runtime, not to mention Sandler talking in a juvenile lisp. With this movie, he proved he could play a mostly-normal likeable guy (with a BerserkButton) that also did a pretty good job hitting the SportsStories beats and didn't just feel like an SNL sketch. Combining that persona with a traditional but successful formula plot would lay the groundwork for his more popular movies like ''Film/TheWeddingSinger'' and ''Film/BigDaddy''.

* VindicatedByHistory: The sharp downturn in quality of Creator/AdamSandler's latter-day films makes it much easier to appreciate this film by contrast as a bright, if perhaps unpolished, comic gem.

* GeniusBonus: For golf fans, there may be some extra laughter over a range having a 400' sign (which none would have, since who could reach it?) and Shooter firing his caddie, because a five-iron suggestion for that approach would deserve a pink slip.

* FranchiseOriginalSin: Several of the issues that would erupt into unwatchability in Sandler's later films show up here, but in muted form that makes them tolerable, most notably the blatant ProductPlacement for Subway.
