** The Gmod fandom managed to get one with UsefulNotes/{{Nintendo}}, of all things, thanks to the April 2024 events that essentially purged all Nintendo-related addons from the Garry's Mod Steam Workshop, which not only consist of direct ports of Nintendo-related models and maps, but also derivative works like MARIO_KART_V3 map or made-from-scratch models like the two brothers from their [[Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow Super Show rendition]]. Naturally, players went furious with the whole fiasco and submitted numerous addons basically condemning to insulting Nintendo for what they did, and some others decided to rebel and reuploading the deleted addons several times even if it means getting banned off the platform.

** The decision made by the Facepunch to purge all things Nintendo-related submission in the Garry's Mod Steam Workshop after an alleged DMCA takedown by the latter ended up instilling chaos among the playerbase. Detractors disliked this action because not only Garry and co. not only essentially erases 20 years worth of history and contributions from the passionate community, but also criticizes Garry for essentially caving in to an alleged DMCA takedown that originated from an infamous DMCA abuser and repeat offender that was responsible of falsely taking down Nintendo-related addons in the Steam Workshop several times prior. Defenders argued that Garry only did the thing because everything came all of the sudden and he didn't want to instill even bigger fire to the whole fiasco that could've risked not just Gmod Workshop, but also Garry's Mod and the modding scene as a whole, considering Nintendo's own near-invincible track record at cracking on individuals or groups who uses their intellectual property in their projects without permission. [[TakeAThirdOption A third faction]] argued that while the Facepunch team did their best to resolve the situation considering what an uphill battle they had to face if Nintendo does end up taking things to court, they also criticizes their immediate action without thinking twice about it, as not only the purge essentially removes anything Nintendo-related up to that point, but it also affects derivative works that either create things from scratch or simply paying homage to Nintendo, like the legendary MARIO_KART_V3 of the WebAnimation/TeamFabulous2 fame. The only thing that all sides both agreed with is that they really hated Aaron Peters for basically instigating the whole thing and Nintendo for forcing the whole situation to the modder's throat, with only few (vocal) minority of Nintendo fanboys that openly supported Nintendo's action and exercising their rights to defend their intellectual property.

** Similarly, [=SCars=] used to be the "king of vehicle addons" because of providing an alternative to the clunky and heavily outdated driving system from the original VideoGame/HalfLife2 and giving user the ability to customize the vehicle's handling which allows them to perform driving techniques that was impossible in the base game, on top of several features that give [=SCars=] some variety over others, like A.I. Driving and a simple lap racing system. As the time goes, people start finding the implementation of [=SCars=] to be rather clunky and did not age well [[labelnote:examples include]]car is very slippery regardless of handling to the point you have easier time trying to drift in the game than driving normally, the camera is just as jittery if not worse, the A.I. drivers are counterintuitive at best and borderline braindead at worse, the racing feature is very limited that you better roleplay it with your friends and the A.I. is not that suitable for it, very cumbersome to use serverside and some more[[/labelnote]] that people would argue whether [=SCars=] was worth it or just stick to the regular car addons. Then came the [=VCMod=], an addon that significantly improves the basegame vehicle handling by adding the ability to customize almost every inch of the vehicle to your hearts content while also making sure that the driving experience is just as comfortable if not better than the vanilla system. Most importantly? It's compatible with almost every vehicle addons in the Workshop. It's only downside is that the addon is locked behind a paywall that's quite steep. Years later the Simfphys LUA Vehicles was released on the Steam Workshop, providing almost the same amount of feature of [=VCMod=] has to offer while also being free for charge. Both immediately blow [=SCars=] out of proportion and now it's seen as outdated in comparison and only pops out because it's nowhere as resource extensive like [=VCMod=] and Simfphys and performs better on weaker hardware, or the nostalgia trip to some players who were fond of it.

Both immediately blow [=SCars=] out of proportion and now it's seen as outdated in comparison and only pops out because it's nowhere as resource extensive like [=VCMod=] and Simfphys and performs better on weaker hardware, or the nostalgia trip to some players who were fond of it.

** The removal of the toybox in place of the new workshop support. Garry did his best to get players used to it saying that it was not a bad thing. It isn't helped by the fact that downloading larger addons can cause not only the game itself to crash but ''UsefulNotes/{{Steam}} as well''.

** For ''[=GMod=]'' 13, Garry removed the restrictions on facial muscle animation, and added some more ways of manipulating bones. This essentially allows the player to make any kind of HumanoidAbomination they'd like out of the [=NPCs=] they have installed. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBsdWW7MOew Hoo]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiuDiygINKo boy]], are the results genuinely terrifying.
** When a Nextbot isn't some 2D picture of a meme or {{Narm}}y creepypasta character, it can be scary to know that you are in the same map as a predatory NPC that always knows where you are, is faster than you, is actively trying to murder you, and the only way you could defend yourself is by trying to lose it in labyrinths, [[SuperPersistentPredator and even that's not guaranteed to save you]].

** The [[BlatantLies Harmless]] Companion Cube. At first, it seems to be a regular Companion Cube from ''VideoGame/{{Portal}}''...but when you turn around, you'll notice ''[[CantMoveWhileBeingWatched it's moved closer]]''. Look away for too long, and it'll creep up on you, before pulling out a knife and ''stabbing you to death''. It's even worse if you've lost it.
*** Alternatively, there's mods that offer [[Series/DoctorWho the weeping angels]] and [[Website/SCPFoundation SCP-173]].

** The classic map gm_shambles is a good example of a paranoia inducing map. It is an old abandoned British neighbourhood at night with a [[OminousFog faint bit of fog.]] It has only a few enterable houses and [[NothingIsScarier they are all missing their furniture, and all of their doors are either missing or knocked down.]] Some windows are boarded up, some houses have only a few lights on, some houses have been damaged and ''[[NightmareFuel some houses even have splatters of]]'' '''''[[NightmareFuel blood.]]''''' There is also a creepy ambience throughout that sounds like a very faint drone and sometimes, church bells may ring... [[NothingisScarier It leaves little to no evidence of]] [[ApocalypseHow what kind of apocalypse had actually happened here,]] but the only clue of ''"what"'' may have happened is a small newspaper left on the floor of one of the living rooms of a house. There are also some disturbing [[EasterEgg Easter Eggs]] around the map, with an example [[spoiler: being a well that has a gnome in a middle of a pentagram at the bottom.]] all of this results in a map so creepy that sometimes ''some players are not even able to explore the map very far'' '''''without becoming too tensed up.'''''

** At one time when it came to aircraft mods in Gmod, typically WAC was one of the most popular choices among players especially for vehicles related to either modern day or various franchises. Though WAC largely fell to the wayside when LFS began hitting the scene which quickly became the primary base many creators used going forward and what many servers began to use in part due to being easier for players to learn and handle (with the exception of helicopters which still require some skill to master) as well as allowing the vehicles to be controlled with AI. Nowadays, while WAC still definitely has it's fans, it's mainly remembered for its high difficulty curve when trying to use them.

* SignatureScene: More of a signature ''map'', but ''gm_construct'' is well remembered due to it's sandbox-friendly design, being one of the only maps to come with [=GMod=], and therefore a map just about every player has played on. It's also well known for the unintentionally creepy dark room.

** The physgun will be this in any Sandbox server that allows PvP, but does not regulate its use among players. A favorite tool for {{Griefer}}s, it is nauseatingly easy to OneHitKill any player just by spawning heavy props and flinging them at players with a flick of the mouse wheel.
