* TheWoobie: Basilio. The most 'innocent' of the students, at least according to one other character. [[spoiler: Yet he ends up being the one doing the most jail time for a political stir he had almost nothing to do with. He ends up not graduating from medical school, his benefactor Kapitan Tiago dies, and his fiancee Juli commits suicide after she tries to save him by asking the local parish priest to intervene---only to end up almost getting raped.]] Did anyone mention that he already has quite the backstory as detailed in the first book?

** Juli herself, selling herself into slavery in order to pay for her family deaths makes you feel sorry for her. Exacerbated in the chapter named after her when she attempts to free an imprisoned Basilio, [[spoiler: knowing that her only recourse is to talk to Father Camorra. However, she's so desperate to find another way because she fears for what the friar would do to her. She has a panic attack even entering the building, and ends up jumping off to her death.]] Rizal wanted to paint a picture of how peasant women were treated at the time.
