* {{Sequelitis}} The sequel is nowhere near as good as the first one.
** The second sequel got mixed review but is mostly seen as better than "A New Beginning".
* SpecialEffectsFailure: While Draco is a well-animated/rendered CG Character, [[ConspicuousCG the lighting on him looks off in the scenes he's in]], but it's not that big a problem.
** The sequel, however, falls under this trope. Especially when you realize that the company hired on for it (not ILM) was also responsible for the X-Ray scene in the original ''Film/TotalRecall1990'', one of the more groundbreaking moments in Visual effects history.
* TearJerker: Very few people who have watched this movie have not burst into tears. Many cry simply at the thought of it. [[spoiler:Not only does Draco - the world's very last surviving dragon - die, but he is killed by his best friend. ''At his own request.'' Only a few scenes earlier, he specifically mentions how he finally has everything he's ever needed]].
** You know a scene is sad when WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick finds it in her cold, black heart to admit to being misty-eyed at it.

* CompleteMonster: At the film's start, Einon seems a youth in need of guidance by his wise mentor, but it is revealed that any honor Einon has is just a front to learn swordsmanship from Sir Bowen. After Einon finds his dying father, he just tries to wrench the crown out of the man's hands, showing what he will become. When mortally wounded, Einon is saved only when a dragon shares his heart with him, linking their lives. As King, Einon taxes and works the people without mercy and orders a man's eyes put out with hot pokers and then casually kills him. Einon tries to rape that man's daughter later and when his mother tries to kill the dragon to stop Einon, Einon kills her with no remorse. While Bowen initially blames the dragon for Einon's change, it turns out Einon was always a monster and the dragon shared his heart to try to change his nature.

* CompleteMonster: Einon. Proving that he is no better than his father, Einon wastes no time becoming TheCaligula following his father's death, and enjoys torturing and abusing his own peasants, also treating them like slaves. He kills Kara's father, and then tries to force himself on her (in the book he [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil straight up rapes her]] and eventually becomes so evil that his own mother acknowledges him as "a creature not worthy of life". This is also right before [[spoiler: he murders her]]
