** Even the lore itself has caused a divide between those who view the game as a direct continuation of Doomguy's exploits from the classic games since his IChooseToStay self-imposed exile in Hell at the end of Doom 64, and those who maintain that the 2016 title is either a SoftReboot or self-contained story. The matter of where Doom 3 fits into the timeline in either camp also tends to bring up some contention among die-hard fans.

* ScrappyWeapon: The pistol, like always in the franchise. Though it was given a secondary function through charged shots, said charged shots take a while to reach their maximum damage potential, and it's only effective on the weakest enemies. By the time the player has invested enough points into it and completed its mastery challenge, the player will already have acquired far better weapons right out of the box. It may have an infinite ammo pool, but there's plenty of ammunition scattered throughout the maps, and that's not even factoring the "Rich Get Richer" rune.

It's no surprise that VideoGame/DoomEternal gets rid of the pistol and makes the shotgun the first gun you get.

Doesn't apply, because there are no clean energy resources left in the DOOM universe at this point.

* EightPointEight: IGN caught flack for giving the game a score of 7.1 in their review, with quite a few readers taking exception to the reviewer's complaint that it feels too close to the original Doom, and the reviewer saying it "resembles the 1993 game it should be. But with all due respect, those are desperately low expectations". It was also one of the few reviews that altered the score based on what they perceived as weak multiplayer; other reviewers who didn't like the multiplayer waved it off as irrelevant in a primarily single-player game. IGN would later give the Switch version an 8.5, perhaps knowing how angry it made the fans
* AccidentalAesop: If you think about it, the game can be read as an unintentionally brilliant satire of the American fuel industry, with the plot being centered around a massively powerful billion-dollar MegaCorp that, in response to a severe energy crisis, would rather build a portal to the Christian Hell to harvest its energy than resort to safe and sustainable clean energy resources like solar and wind power.
** This point is, however, up to interpretation, as the codex entries are vague on the utilization of renewable energy. It's entirely possible that solar, wind, geothermal, etc. are being utilized to their fullest extent; they just don't generate the truly staggering amount of energy required by a human civilization that has extended across the entire solar system.

* BrokenBase: [=SnapMap=] has also been the cause of division among the fans. While it has powerful and fairly easy to use scripting, some have found it a poor replacement for actual mapping or modding tools as it suffers from strict memory and object limits and a poor variety of modules to use, inheriting the maligned two-weapon limit from multiplayer, and lacking different tilesets. There's also a number of omitted weapons, enemies and power-ups from both single-player and multiplayer. This has begun to ease with the "Unto The Evil" update, which added several weapons to the selection, a Hell-themed tileset, and allowed mappers to remove the weapon limit.

Authors Saving Throw is for changes made to a work's plot, not mechanics.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: Although still considered to be a good game in its own right, VideoGame/Doom3 is controversial among the fans for the GenreShift to SurvivalHorror as opposed to the series' traditional form of brutally violent action-horror. This one gets right back to basics by amping up the speed and intensity of the action and plot progression to a ridiculous degree. Doom 3 used a prolonged opening before the portal to hell finally opened - this one has you kill your first zombie within the first twenty seconds of footage.

This is a common technique in first person games in order to conserve resources and avoid the model clipping through the camera, and isn't a problem since the model is usually never seen in full...except during certain death animations where it is and the Doomguys missing features are obvious.

** The information about the game at Quakecon 2014 was intended to be convention exclusive, and id Software turned off their live streams during the presentation. As you can imagine, the 50,000 people who were watching the streams were pissed. It later came out that the demo shown to the public at E3 2015 was the same one shown at Quakecon 2014, but by then the anger had largely subsided.
** The open beta test of the multiplayer on Steam was bombed with negative reviews that led to the game's rating bottoming out at 36%, leading to fears that the released game would receive a similar reaction from the fans. Thankfully, it didn't.
*** Even worse was the reception of the season pass, which had most of the forum pages on Steam filled with complaints about the season pass and its terrible timing.
** Bethesda's decision not to provide review codes for the game resulted in a significant amount of skepticism from the gaming press. The fact the game managed to get glowing reviews despite the resulting ill-will speaks a lot as to its quality. Penny Arcade of all people defended Bethesda's decision not to give out review codes, citing a trend of game journalists using game reviews as a springboard for Author Tracts about completely unrelated issues, rather than primarily focusing on reviewing the game.
** Shortly before the game's release, Polygon uploaded a video of one of their reviewers playing the first 30 minutes of Doom. The reviewer playing the game showed such an embarrassing lack of skill that Polygon ended up disabling ratings and comments for the video because of the sheer amount of vitriol it received. Many people wondered how a person who gets paid to play video games could suck so bad at doing just that. A lot of the people criticizing the reviewer's ability also brought up that in the past, Polygon has penalized games for being too difficult (like VideoGame/StarFoxZero and VideoGame/TheLastOfUs).
*** The negative reception to the video was so bad that Rock Paper Shotgun published an editorial titled "An End To “GIT GUD” – You Don’t Need To Be “Good” At Games To Enjoy Them", which defended Polygon's video... and was also lambasted for completely missing the point. The point being that a games journalism site like Polygon, formed solely for the purpose of providing their consumers with information about games, should've had someone who was at least competent at the game playing it, in order to show their consumers how the game would perform, and give them an idea of the overall quality of the product.
** As mentioned under AuthorsSavingThrow, id, noting the negative reaction to the multiplayer, made all of the DLC free; however, they did so by making the DLC included as part of a mandatory update to the base game. As many players still had little to no interest in the MisbegottenMultiplayerMode, even after id's fixes to it, they became frustrated at having to waste both hours waiting for the update to download as well as dozens of gigabytes of bandwidth and storage on their systems.

A lot of the people criticizing the reviewer's ability also brought up that in the past, Polygon has penalized games for being too difficult (like VideoGame/StarFoxZero and VideoGame/TheLastOfUs).
*** The negative reception to the video was so bad that Rock Paper Shotgun published an editorial titled ‘’An "An End To “GIT GUD” – You Don’t Need To Be “Good” At Games To Enjoy Them’’ Them", which defended Polygon's video... and was also lambasted for completely missing the point. The point being that a games journalism site like Polygon, formed solely for the purpose of providing their consumers with information about games, should've had someone who was at least competent at the game playing it, in order to show their consumers how the game would perform, and give them an idea of the overall quality of the product.

** It's not uncommon to hear people arguing that Doom 2016 is a SurvivalHorror game like its immediate predecessor...but only from the demons' perspective.
