* CompleteMonster: [[PsychopathicManchild Azrael]] is a former muse turned demon, who was banished to Hell eons ago for refusing to participate in the war between Lucifer and God. He is [[TheManBehindTheMan the mastermind]] behind Bartleby and Loki's plan to get back into Heaven. He gave them the idea by sending them a newspaper article of the church's absolution ceremony; he also had his cronies beat God--who was taking a mortal form as an old man--into a coma so God couldn't interfere. When his plans don't work, Azrael traps the heroes in a bar on their way to the ceremony and reveals [[OmnicidalManiac his plan]]: he's counting on the angels getting absolution and re-entering Heaven, which would overrule God's word and negate all of existence. His [[SuicidalCosmicTemperTantrum motivation]] is he he would rather not exist than live in Hell, and if all of existence has to go down with him, then so be it.

* NightmareFuel: Azrael's deleted monologue of how human-kind's shame transformed hell, once merely the absence of God, into the fire-and-brimstone pit of suffering it now is, accompanied by the occasional hellish wail and his own voice becoming [[VoiceOfTheLegion distorted into a demonic-bellow]] as he gets angrier. He then proceeds to put a hand over Bethany's eyes and show her ten seconds worth of what the script describes as "[[TakeOurWordForIt some of the most fucked up and disturbing imagery that can be crammed into 240 frames of film]]." Whatever it is causes Bethany to collapse and start ''convulsing''!

* HarsherInHindsight: In the scene where Azrael holds the gang hostage at the bar, Jay can occasionally be seen sleeping in the background. This was not a gag, as Jason Mewes had lied to Kevin Smith about having kicked his heroin addiction, a side effect of which was frequent bouts of drowsiness (this despite Smith congratulating Mewes by writing "See? Sober living paid off" in the credits). This resulted in the two briefly falling out and Mewes having to go to rehab twice between 2002 and 2011 before he actually became sober for good.

* {{Anvilicious}}: Many of the ideas proposed in the film about organized religion and the nature of spirituality are worth serious consideration, but since they're filtered through typical '90s [[DeadpanSnarker snark-talk]], a lot of it comes off as SophisticatedAsHell. More often than not, the film feels like a long, [[ContemplateOurNavel navel-gazing]] conversation with someone than a story.

* TearJerker: As mentioned below, Bartleby meeting God once again since thousands of years ago and breaking down in tears. It only makes the punishment he deserves tragic... a little bit at least.
** Silent Bob crying as he carries [[spoiler:Bethany's dead body. Thankfully, she's brought back to life.]]
** Bethany realizes the AwfulTruth: She must kill the angels Bartleby and Loki. She runs into the woods and falls into a creek, flailing at the water as she cuts loose a RageAgainstTheHeavens. The Metatron arrives in response to calm her down, which leads to Bethany collapsing weakly into the water, weakly protesting against her quest. Followed by the Metatron telling the story of how he had to inform Jesus about his destiny.
-->'''Bethany:''' I don't want this, it's too big.\\
'''Metatron''': That's what Jesus said. Yes, I had to tell him. And you can imagine how that hurt the Father -- not to be able to tell the Son Himself because one word from His lips would destroy the boy's frail human form? So I was forced to deliver the news to a scared child who wanted nothing more than to play with other children. I had to tell this little boy that He was God's only Son, and that it meant a life of persecution and eventual crucifixion at the hands of the very people He came to enlighten and redeem. He begged me to take it back, as if I could. He begged me to make it all not true. And I'll let you in on something, Bethany, this is something I've never told anyone before... If I had the power, ''I would have.''
** The end credits song, "Still," sung by [[Music/AlanisMorissette God Herself]], about how, in spite of [[HumansAreFlawed all of the terrible things that human beings have done and continue to do]], She loves them unconditionally.
