* CompleteMonster: Akihiro Kurata is the single most despicable human being to appear in the franchise. Planning on committing genocide on Digimon due to nothing more than a petty grudge while conquering the world, Kurata created the Gizumon that would kill Digimon and stop their natural reincarnation cycle, which he first unleashed upon a noble Digimon who had been a surrogate father to the boy Ikuto. Kurata's reaction to Ikuto sobbing over his father's loss was cruel, hysterical laughter. Kurata then created a weapon to kill thousands of Digimon in a single blast and blackmailed one of the humans into working for him by threatening to murder his [[IllGirl sick sister]], before even experimenting on said sister. Kurata's hatred extended to awakening a monstrous demon and attempting to merge with it to obliterate everything he saw as an enemy.

** ''Many'' MonsterOfTheWeek Digimon were good guys in previous series. A lot of people were [[WhatTheHellHero rather unhappy]] with seeing so many of their old favorites shoot at the good guys for a few minutes and then die. Examples include Digmon, Garurumon, Togemon, Garudamon and Zudomon. This goes into FanDumb territory when one realizes that Digimon were always portrayed as both individuals and members of a ''species'', and that ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'' once used a second Greymon - the evolved form ''of the main character's digimon'' - as a MonsterOfTheWeek.

* HilariousInHindsight: The main characters' Digimons who can evolve to Mega-level are color-coded in orange, blue, pink, purple, and red; the same color as those of the main characters of Anime/DokiDokiPrettyCure. Only with the color for TheHeroine and TheChick switched. It doesn't help that both series are written by the same person, Ryota Yamaguchi. And it doesn't help that both series have a TagAlongKid character who is voiced by Creator/RieKugimiya.

* JerkassWoobie: Nanami and Ivan of the Bio-Hybrids; Nanami when solemnly monologuing about how she's been lonely all her life due to being socially isolated because of her intellect, and Ivan when it's revealed that he only works for Kurata because he needs the money to support his many little brothers and sisters, and is too dim-witted to truly realize what he's doing is wrong.

* MisBlamed: No, Ikuto's Tarzan-speak was not added to the english dub; he spoke broken Japanese in the original version too.

* TheScrappy: Yggdrasil is also reviled for his KillAllHumans plan that responded to Kurata's actions, the fact that most of what he tries to do [[ItsBeenDone has been done before]] by [[Anime/DigimonTamers Zhuqiaomon]], [[Anime/DigimonFrontier Lucemon]], and even Merukimon and Saberleomon in this very series, and just being a rather forced FinalBoss.

** Also Citrumon, a fruit-based knockoff of Nanimon, who was a BomberNanimon in Japan. Doubles as being {{Bowdlerize}}d, since a gruff and hairy male chucking bombs to destroy large structures for no reason reads "terrorist" to a lot of people.

* CompleteMonster: Kurata, who's essentially the Digimon franchise's answer to [[VideoGame/MegaManZero Dr. Weil]]. Let's put this into perspective - Myotismon from Anime/DigimonAdventure ''used'' to hold the title of the most evil Digimon villain by far. Kurata, metaphorically speaking, blasted him off his throne. Kurata is an evil, ''evil'', '''[[RuleOfThree evil]]''', and utterly pathetic excuse of a human being. And unlike Myotismon, Kurata isn't even a CardCarryingVillain. He's just a genocidal asshole who honestly believes that his views are right.

* HoYay: At least in the original, Lalamon gets a little too touchy when Ivan says he will become Yoshino's boyfriend. Then again, it's [[HandWave hand waved]] as Lalamon playing along Ivan as an excuse to distract him from commanding the Gizumon, but she does get some suggestive lines like "Don't worry, I won't hand you over that easily".
** Then there's Touma's battle with Nanami. Touma seems to really ignore the half-naked Nanamis in favour of the powers even he cannot calculate (read: Masaru). As much as he doesn't get over being ignored because [[MessianicArchetype Masaru is today's designated saviour]], that particular scene fired up the [[SlapSlapKiss bipolar sensors]].

* AmericansHateTingle[=/=]{{Germans Love David Hasselhoff}}: Touma is much less popular in the west because he's seen as arrogant and unlikeable, and the fact that his [[spoiler: false betrayal would have gotten Agumon killed were it not for ThePowerOfFriendship, as well as the fact that the entire cast just overlooked this detail]] was the last straw for many western viewers. Masuru is also surprisingly popular for being one of the most unique Digimon main characters in the history of the franchise.

* TheScrappy: Justified example: Ahikiro Kurata, since his evil acts are outnumbered only by his UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom tendencies, and usually go hand in hand. His very motive for killing the Digimon was based on at least one act of cowardice on his part, which he's even ''told'' by Marcus but he's too much of a self-centered JerkAss to accept this.
** Yggdrasil is also reviled for his KillAllHumans plan that responded to Kurata's actions, the fact that most of what he tries to do [[ItsBeenDone has been done before]] by [[Anime/DigimonTamers Zhuqiaomon]], [[Anime/DigimonFrontier Lucemon]], and even Merukimon and Saberleomon in this very series, and just being a rather forced FinalBoss.

** Much less notorious than Kurata, but still an example nonetheless, is the evil [=MetalPhantomon=] from episode 15, who [[MoralEventHorizon sadistically made Thomas suffer through the memory of his mother's death in order to suck out his lifeforce.]] ThisIsUnforgivable, indeed.

Those of the latter camp praise him for being a [[CompleteMonster morally deprived, genocidal maniac]] who lacks any [[EvenEvilHasStandards redeeming values]]. Then there are some who see him as both or just don't give a shit.

* BrokenBase: Fans are split on how good this series was.

** Kouki, the only member of the Bio-Hybrids who doesn't make a HeelFaceTurn and truthfully seems to ''like'' working for Kurata and killing Digimon (Ivan is doing it to help his family and Nanami to - unsuccessfully - fulfill an emotional void in her. Kouki has no such excuse.) [[spoiler:During his final battle with [=ShineGreymon=], he purposefully holds the city around them hostage, not caring for the hundreds of deaths he could cause. And while being stripped of his powers means he can no longer do anything too heinous, he ends up in the GrandFinale as a repeat-offended delinquent that officer Yoshino chases after, showing that no, he has no intentions of ever becoming a better person.]]

* FunnyAneurysmMoment: The Digimon you would usually root for in the previous series[[hottip:*:specifically, [[Anime/DigimonAdventure Omnimon]], [[Anime/DigimonAdventure02 Magnamon]] and [[Anime/DigimonTamers Gallantmon]]]], are ''bad guys'', as members of the Royal Knights. [[spoiler:Well, at least until the final battle.]]

* BaseBreaker: Kurata isn't someone who you would give a hug to. What is debated by fans is whether he is [[TheScrappy an unlikable villain]] or a case of LoveToHate. For those who see him as the former, he is disliked for his [[DirtyCoward cowardice]] and [[EvilIsPetty pettiness]] and for lacking [[EvilIsCool any coolness]]. * MindRape: What Metal Phantomon does to Marcus,Thomas,and Yoshi,not too different from what happened to [[Anime/DigimonTamers Jeri]]

* GoodIsDumb: Too often, the heroes just stand and watch Kurata's weaponry line up, and waste time openly wondering what he's up to instead of trying to prevent it. Given that his stated motive is Digimon extermination, it's hard to understand why they let his minions work away with little opposition. This is particularly prevalent during the Eldradimon siege.

* MotiveDecay: At first Kurata's goal is the elimination of all Digimon. Then he suddenly decides, screw that: he wants the cliched "world domination" too! This is debatable, however, as Kurata's motivation also derives from his jealousy and inferiority complex towards Masaru's father, so total control probably ''would'' be something he'd want to achieve through digimons' power.
** This also applies to Yggdrasil,whose main motive in destroying Earth is to save the Digimon,however when the Digimon and humans work together and stop the worlds from colliding,it instead calls to reboot both worlds.

* StupidSacrifice: Baronmon stands on a wall, yelling out to the ships not to hurt Eldradimon, and gets shot in the back by a Gizumon XT. Even assuming the ships could hear him over that range, what made him think they'd comply, and why did he feel the need to expose himself to attack?
