* OnceOriginalNowOverdone:
** When Death started off, they were among the heaviest and most lyrically vile bands going. Their two early {{Gorn}}-oriented albums, ''Scream Bloody Gore'' and ''Leprosy'', are, nowadays, (lyrically) quite tame compared to other, later death metal bands, especially [[Music/CannibalCorpse a certain one.]] Musically, death metal has gotten so extreme since their inception that a fan of bands like Music/{{Cryptopsy}} or Music/DyingFetus can find Death to sound like elevator music in comparison (not helped by Death ''lacking'' a lot of the now-defining, most brutal features of death metal, such as excessively guttural vocals or blast beats).
** It's not just in terms of heaviness, either. Quite a few metal fans have listened to Death wondering just what was so special about them, aside from the fact that they kickstarted death metal.

Added DiffLines:

* GrowingTheBeard: Though Death are generally regarded by most metalheads as a remarkably consistent band, most fans agree on two definitive "growth" moments:
** Though ''Scream Bloody Gore'' is still loved by most fans, for many ''Leprosy'' is an EvenBetterSequel, discarding the vast majority of thrash metal elements the band still had in favor of being even more vicious while retaining many of the strong points of the former album.
** After a slight dip with ''Spiritual Healing'' (though that had the important lyrical shift away from gore and into more complex, society-based topics), the shift to technical death metal on ''Human'' resulted in the songs just getting more and more interesting and unpredictable in direction and a string of four near-universally acclaimed albums.

"Creator dies" with no further connection is misuse of Harsher In Hindsight; everyone dies eventually.

* HarsherInHindsight: The band's name is hard to look at the same way since Chuck died tragically.

* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Gene Hoglan is very popular with the fans, possibly due to the fact that he's been in many [[Music/{{Testament}} other]] [[Music/FearFactory bands]]. Steve [=DiGiorgio=] is also quite popular for similar reasons as Hoglan.
** James Murphy has become more appreciated in hindsight as one of the reasons to love ''Spiritual Healing'', which is wildly considered to be Death's weakest effort.
** Bobby Koelble has also become appreciated as one of the most unique and underutilized guitarists that Chuck had, with his gypsy and hard bop-inflected style standing out as one of the more unique applications of jazz guitar in metal (which usually tends to skew either towards fusion or free jazz).
** Richard Christy's drumming is often considered ''The Sound of Perseverance''[='=]s secret weapon. Just listen to the fills he plays throughout the album - hell, just the first few seconds of "Scavenger of Human Sorrow" or "To Forgive Is to Suffer" are likely to convince sceptics.

* TheScrappy:
** Rick Rozz is disliked by a number of modern fans for his very divisive guitar style involving lots of whammy bar use.
** Kam Lee is disliked as well, not for his musicianship (he only played on the poor quality early demos, plus his own music is actually pretty well-regarded), but for his extremely unpleasant personality, becoming just as known over the years for his needlessly abrasive nature and "my way or the highway" attitude as he is for his music.
** Bill Andrews also receives some derision from fans, who consider his drumming to be simplistic and limited, particularly by comparison to the band's later drummers.

* TooCoolToLive: Chuck Schuldnier, one of the most talented and proficient guitarists in the death metal scene, and an ''extremely'' humble and all around nice guy.

* CriticalDissonance: While ''The Sound of Perseverance'' is loved by both critics and fans of the band, opinions on the album among the metal community as a whole are slightly more varied. For the most part, it's hailed as a fantastic album by the community. But there is a VocalMinority who argue that that even more progressive song structures and, particularly, [[VocalEvolution Chuck's move from a gutteral growl to a high-pitched shriek]] veer too far from his band's roots for their liking.
