** The bogeymen.

to:

** The Many people who saw the film as children were particularly frightened by the bogeymen.

** Mostly averted in the Laurel and Hardy version -- despite being made in the 1930s much of what was seen was well-crafted and even the stop-motion soldier sequence is high quality. The only possible failure is the cameo by "Mickey Mouse" which is obviously a monkey in a costume, and some of the damaged soldiers in the final battle have their shoulders sit too high or other oddities as the actors had to wear prop elements to pull of headless or armless effects.

While his speaking definitely comes across as Narmy, I find it hard to believe that at least some kids who watched the 1997 film growing up WEREN'T scared of the Goblin king just for out of place he is.

** While the Goblin King in the 1997 version may be terrifying to most viewers, he has a childish diction and speaking pattern.

** In the 1997 version, the imagery of the Goblin Forest growing progressively scarier and darker the closer the group gets to the Goblin’s home. One shot has a horde of goblins running around on a distant cliff, and then we see a child's skull from one of their last meals.
** The Goblin King isn't that frightening due to having a very childish diction and speaking pattern, but whenever he roars he gains a very unsettling reverb to his voice.

* UnfortunateImplications: "I Can't Do The Sum." In the original operetta, Jane spends the whole song lamenting that she can't solve mathematical word problems... whilst this was most likely just meant to be an individual character flaw, meant to make Jane relatable to the audience, it becomes jarring when one realizes the stereotype of girls being less than capable at math. Disney re-contextualized it to Mary bemoaning the difficulty of balancing her budget, an issue viewers of both genders could relate with, but it still seems to enforce the stereotype through such lines as, "Numbers always rack our brains/Why are we so dumb?", although, again, this was most likely not the creators intent.
