Misused tropes (also now defunct An Aesop wicks)

* DesignatedHero:
** Done on purpose with Hailey. She plans to use Aqua's wish to force her mother to stay in town. Then she eventually realises that it's her mother's dream to go to work in Australia - and learns AnAesop.
** Played straight with [[MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold Leonard]]. Though he seems to be a decent guy, it's implied he used ''his'' wish from Aqua to gain the attention of a woman he's been interested in, ''without'' considering her say in the matter. Unlike with Hailey, he's never called out on this.[[note]]Aqua says that the mermaid wishes can't violate the laws of nature, so it is possible he just asked for the courage to talk to the woman, but it's never elaborated on.[[/note]]

* OlderThanTheyThink: The Aesop that [[spoiler:true love isn't always confined to romantic relationships]] appears here, predating ''WesternAnimation/Frozen2013'' and ''Series/OnceUponATime'' by six years.

* MemeticMutation: Jojo whispering to Emily Roberts [[labelnote:Explanation]]The scene of Claire and Hailey whipering to each other became popular as a way of hyping someone up, often on the lines of I heard he can X.[[/labelnote]]

** Jake McDorman, who plays Raymond, would also become more well-known in later years due to major supporting roles in films like ''Film/AmericanSniper'' and ''Film/LadyBird'' and shows like ''Series/Watchmen2019''.

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: both the book and the movie were well received in Canada. It's Possibly even more popular there then in the United States.

Some Anvils Need To Be Dropped got cut and it was never about critics liking something.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: ''Variety'' praised the movie for its ending that had [[spoiler: Raymond not being in love with Aqua after three days, it being platonic love that saves the day, and a BittersweetEnding that has Claire and Hailey understanding they'll have to separate]].
--> "Without getting too heavy-handed with moralizing or message-mongering, filmmakers suggest that gaining maturity and self-awareness may be more important than fantasy-fulfilling happily-ever-aftering."

Added DiffLines:

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The film is dated to the mid-2000s by some of the technology used; Claire and Hailey call Raymond using a landline phone, the internet is barely used and there's a notable lack of cell phones among the teenage characters. Claire and Hailey's angst about being separated by one of them moving to Australia would be considered much more so in the days before social media (which of course is not mentioned). The crimped hair, Bermuda shorts and soundtrack featuring Music/MandyMoore and Music/TheJonasBrothers adds to the 2000s setting.
