** Just look at any video or photo of him once he began wearing the black singlet, it's clear just by looking at his waistline he's wearing a back brace trying desperatly to support his spine, judging by how his waistline is pushed in. It's a band-aid at most, back supports aren't designed for people of Andre's size, they just can't contain that kind of bulk, so Andre had to keep working and living with half-measures.

** In retrospect, watching many of André's later matches in the late '80s. His match against Wrestling/HulkHogan (in which he won his first and only WWF title) in 1988 was especially painful. At that point, he could barely move and could only manage a small handful of offensive moves, limited to punches and one or two bodyslams. At the time, audiences would have seen him as a typical slow and plodding big man, but with the knowledge of his medical condition now well known, it's easy (and heartbreaking) to see the pain that he goes through while performing.
