* Rinthy from Literature/OuterDark. She's a poor girl who only has her cold older brother, Culla, whom she had a baby with and went through a rough birth that left her bedridden for weeks. Then, when she realizes that Culla abandoned the baby, she goes on a long journey alone to go find him that takes her beyond her home for the first time in her life and leaves her entirely beholden to the kindness of strangers. While Rinthy is treated compassionately by most people she comes by, you can't help but feel that when she tells people she intends on raising the baby that she would have an extremely difficult time doing so even if she managed to find him. [[spoiler:And at the end, she finds out that it was AllForNothing when she sees the bones of her baby that had been killed by the three strangers. The last we see of Rinthy is her laying down at the site of the slaughter, and it's left ambiguous if she completely gave up on life or if she would ever be able to move on after this.]]

* Karyn Beatty from Literature/1977 is easy to feel sorry for, considering the entire book is basically one long TraumaCongaLine for her. Her seemingly perfect life is ruined when she gets physically assaulted and raped in her own home, resulting in a miscarriage. Although her attacker is caught and put away, Karyn is understandably still traumatised. She's convinced to move to a remote town where she doesn't know anyone except her husband, Roy, in the hopes of recuperating faster, which proves to be a big mistake. She realises there's something sinister going on in Drago, but Roy just dismisses it as paranoia and isn't very supportive at all, expecting her to quickly 'get over' what happened . Karyn's beloved dog is killed by a werewolf and then a nice young couple Karyn had helped go 'missing' and no one in town seems to take her seriously save for her new friend Inez, . To top it off, [[spoiler:every other friend she thought she'd made in Drago turns out to be a werewolf and tries to kill her, while Roy eventually becomes a werewolf too and turns on Karyn completely (save for a brief moment near the end), with Karyn being devastated to permanently lose the husband she loved]].

* Literature/DontCallMeIshmael: Ishmael's neuroses, FriendlessBackground (and worries that his first real friend may be terminally ill), constant victimization by bullies, and moments of public humiliation can make him a very sad character, although this lessens throughout the series as he ends each book in a better place than where he was before.

* Literature/TheRunningGrave: A large percentage of the people associated with the [=UHC=] ScamReligion (even the Jerkass Woobies) are horribly victimized and it says something that they are actually getting off comparatively lightly if they are just being subjected to regular Gaslighting, menial labor punishments for showing independence or attachment to loved ones, public shaming, and forced sexual intercourse regardless of their ages and sexual orientations. Some have suffered slow deaths due to being denied medical attention, suffered brain damage from torture after failing important tasks, been subjected to extremely harsh and public MaliciousSlander, driven to try to kill themselves, or forced to participate in crimes which have left them with severe trauma decades later. Paul Draper, Flora Brewster, Emily Pirbright, the Doherty Family, and Brian and Sheila Kinison are among the bigger sufferers, but Louise Pirbright might surpass them all. She ends the book on suicide watch with both of her sons dead, both of her daughters estranged from her (for drastically different reasons), and the knowledge that her family spent decades going through all of that based on the lies of a con man. The cult also forces her to shave her head for a year and desecrate the grave of her CultDefector older son (whom she previously tried to honor by planting flowers on his grave) as part of their power trips. Near the end of the book, Strike reflects on how even the exposure of the dark truth about the cult has left its now-enlightened surviving members “broken in an unfamiliar landscape[.]”

* Haywood from Literature/TalesOfTheFrogPrincess. Let us count the ways. Mother died, horrible father, siblings afraid of him because he's a wizard, can't do the type of magic he wants, his girlfriend's (the one good thing about his adolescence) mother turned him into an otter, he finally turns back but has trouble re-adapting, making him even more awkward and shy than before, and his girlfriend is cursed, turning her into an ugly nasty hag who hates him, and it's almost a year before the curse is broken and he finally gets to marry her. On top of all of that, he's probably in his forties when he finally has a son, and seeing as how this is the middle ages, he'll probably die when his son is in his twenties, or even still a teenager! In short, Haywood's life sucks.

** Prince Ahren Elessedil of the Elves, in Literature/TheVoyageOfTheJerleShannara. He's sent on the Voyage because his brother wants to get him away from the line of succession.
