* Literature/GoblinSlayer: Sword Maiden is utterly terrified of goblins after being captured, tortured, and used as a gobling BreedingSlave when she was still a rookie adventurer. This is why she calls for Goblin Slayer instead of just dealing with the Water Town nest herself.

* In Literature/TheVazulaChronicles, Merletta the mermaid has been afraid of jellyfish ever since being stung by one when she was a child. She makes the mistake of mentioning her fear in front of the other trainees. One of them "pranks" Merletta by putting a highly venomous box jellyfish in her sleeping hammock.

* Literature/JourneyToTheWest: Monkey.

to:

* Literature/JourneyToTheWest: Monkey.Monkey aka Sun Wukong feared the fire of Red Boy enough to flee from it and even plead with Bodhisattva Guanyin for help. Particularly impressive given how little else made the Monkey King so much as sweat, even the wrath of the heavens themselves.

Added DiffLines:

* Christine Daaé from Literature/ThePhantomOfTheOpera though brave enough to run across the high ropes walkways of the upper flies and gently mock her sailor boyfriend Raoul when he’s nervous to follow. The dark, nigh-total blackness terrifies Christine and scatters her wits. Unfortunately for Christine, darkness is exactly where her stalker the eponymous phantom Erik operates and flourishes, at one point easily kidnapping Christine when she enters the room behind the mirror and finds herself in total darkness and panics. It’s shown and later explicitly stated (by a jealous Erik) that the only times Christine can brave the dark is when she’s with Raoul, her childhood sweetheart.

* Literature/GoblinsInTheCastle: Herky at least isn't fond of water, as he scrambles up William's leg to avoid getting wet in a river, panics when it starts raining, and really freaks out when they have to cross under a waterfall. However, Nilbog is full of rivers and waterfalls, so it's not a species-wide trait.

to:

* Literature/GoblinsInTheCastle: Goblins, who prefer the cool underground, fear fire and its heat. IshmaelDon't call him that! and the old Baron used this to their advantage, lighting a ring of fire to trap the goblins so they couldn't get away while the sorcerer worked the spell that drew their spirits out of their bodies and imprisoned them.

Baleful Polymorph is no longer a trope

* The Nome King who first appeared in Ozma of Oz is afraid of eggs, but he has a very good reason - they are poison to his species. (What they can do to them varies depending on what book you read, and is inconsistent, anything from make them sick to reduce them to dust.) This makes him incredibly terrified in one book, when a barrage of Baleful Polymorphs gone out of control turns the whole cast into animals, turning him into a goose; he's afraid of birds too, because birds lay eggs, and he has no idea what might happen if he laid an egg while turned into a bird!
