* Vegeta and Frieza both desire immortality. While Vegeta is allied with them and is the only being for most of the arc capable of plausibly threatening Vegeta, Goku eventually arrives, but is badly damaged. The gang is desperate and Freeza is minutes away. Vegeta is also onto them and is immediately threatening them, and the last wish needs to be made. They have ruled out Gohan because of his lack of fighting experience, and Krillin cannot threaten Freeza even in his first form.\\

!!Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler
* After barely defeating the first Meta-Cooler, Goku & Vegeta realize that there's a whole army of Meta-Coolers at a distance, which would eventually overwhelm the two Saiyans.\\
You'd expect: For Cooler to just kill Goku and Vegeta using the Meta-Cooler army, now that he has the chance.\\
Or: If Cooler wants so badly to torture Goku and Vegeta, he could, again, use the Meta-Cooler army to do that, instead of taking them to his way more vulnerable body, giving them a chance to destroy him.\\
Instead: Cooler brings them both to his real and way more vulnerable body.\\
The result: Goku destroys Cooler and the whole Big Gete Star.

\n* After all of this, Gohan's arrogance and inexperiences has resulted in his father dead, Trunks dead but ultimately revived, and taught Gohan an important lesson about his responsibility to Earth as it's defender.\\
You'd Expect: Even if Gohan hates fighting, that Gohan would understand he has a responsbility to be prepared if another threat shows up. Thus, Gohan would train at least somewhat to maintain his power if not increase it.\\
Instead: Gohan throws himself entirely into his studies and as a result barely trains if at all for 7 years. As a direct result of his slacking Gohan is greatly inadequate in the Buu Saga, both in strength and his experience as a fighter. Gohan makes significant mistakes which an experienced warrior would not throughout the Buu Saga that result in the villain reviving and then obtaining great power.\\
Even Worse: Despite how his refusal to train even somewhat led to a great many problems in the Buu Saga, Gohan refuses to learn his lesson and in both GT and Super slacks off again and as a result is completely outmatched when the threats start showing up again. Meaning Gohan has AesopAmnesia about this in two timelines!

On the other hand, Gohan loses the Potara Earring thrown to him by Goku and is unable to fuse until he finds the earring.\\
You'd Expect: Goku and Gohan work together and defeat Super Buu so that he is restrained and no longer a danger. Even with the power advantage, there is still the issue of getting Piccolo, Goten and Trunks out of Buu's body.\\

You'd Expect: For someone to realize that while they can't kill him, there is no rule about keeping him under surveillance. You'd Expect: Someone present to shut him down, preferably Goku, who is much stronger than him. The only reason Vegeta is allowed to stick around is that he hasn't done anything too evil recently, and now he's just made a death threat. Instead: Nobody minds the fact that Vegeta has openly declared that he considers their own lives less important than him getting in a good punching session. He goes on to cause significantly more problems in the arc that entirely owe to him acting on the intent which he openly declared three years ago.

** Krillin arrives on the battlefield near 16 and 18's hiding place with an emergency suspension controller created by Bulma to shut off the cyborg twins so that they can be destroyed easily. By this point, he's most likely sensed Cell's increasing power and figured out that Cell got 17. Despite his growing crush on Android 18 and his having discerned that the twins aren't evil incarnate, he knows that he probably has to do this in order to make sure Cell can't absorb 18 and become a full-on intergalactic menace. You'd expect: Him to immediately strike and kill 18 when he has the chance, not only because of his own deep-seated issues with the twins but as a pragmatic measure to ensure that Cell can't absorb her and is thus destined to become Super Saiyan chow. Hell, 18 herself could be the one to suggest it if we're worried about making Trunks look too heelish. By this point, she's already threatened to blow herself up, so it wouldn't be unreasonable. Barring that, you'd expect him to just kill Cell while he's punching the shit out of him.\\

it turns out that holding back too much power for Vegeta's pride's sake was entirely pointless. Much of the extra power he thinks he's concealing is really just energy that he's already using as speed, endurance, etc., but can convert into pure strength by bulking up. Furthermore, Cell, Vegeta, and Goku already all know how to do this but choose not to for its obvious strategic disadvantage against a competitive opponent. In a desperate burst against someone, he holds clear superiority over, throwing all his power into a Super Buster Cannon would've both done away with Cell as well as actually impressed and angered Vegeta rather than breaking him, which could've paved the way for a father-son fight in which Trunks earned Vegeta's respect.\\
as far as killing 18? Sure, Vegeta and Krillin would both be upset with Trunks if he did this for their own aforementioned reasons, but Goku and Gohan's return from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber can easily solve both problems. As partly covered above, Vegeta's thirst for a challenge can easily be sated by any of the other three Super Saiyans, and Krillin's heartbreak can be solved via Goku's idea to get a new Namekian to act as Kami and recreate the Earth's Dragon Balls to bring back Cell's victims, which would include 17, with the second wish from Dende's balls being used to bring back 18. In fact, both solutions go together, as 18 would know full well that any of the four Super Saiyans (three once Trunks goes back to his time) can destroy her with ease if she tries to attack innocent people with or without 17, so the twins wouldn't try to replicate the apocalyptic threat of their BadFuture counterparts even if they wanted to.

Gohan's father is actually speaking from firsthand experience.\\
Instead: Gohan smugly feels that Cell's suffering needs to go on on, and he flat-out ignores Goku's warnings, allowing him to restore his body. Eventually during the battle Cell is reduced to his Semi-Perfect Form, and Gohan still doesn't pounce on the chance to finish him off—which off... which is what causes and allows Cell to decide to self-destruct, taking the whole planet with him as one last act of spite.\\
Also: Seeing that Cell was knocked back into his Semi-Perfect form, Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks could've just jumped into the fight and killed Cell themselves. Goku could even have grabbed Cell once he powered down, teleported him to King Kai's planet, killed the monster in Other World, and teleport teleported back to Earth. Oh, and speaking of King Kai's planet...

You'd Expect: Goku immediately grabs Cell and brings him to King Kai's Planet, where there are only two/three people without wasting any time, grabbing King Kai and Bubbles (and Gregory) right after that, and takes everyone but Cell to Earth, having a very angry King Kai but saving the day.\\

Despite Buu's quirky nature, he's vastly more powerful than anyone else in the situation (with the exception of Goku with Super Saiyan 3, though Babidi is unaware of this). Aside from Majin Buu, he still has Dabura, who is roughly even with Super Saiyan 2 Gohan and probably not far from Goku and Vegeta in the same form. Although he's the weakest of Babidi's minions (perhaps even including Vegeta himself from Babidi's viewpoint), Dabura has shown to be much more controllable and loyal than Majin Buu (and to a lesser extent, Vegeta), who is infantile and quite volatile, attacking Dabura for insulting him and doing serious damage immediately (though Dabura survives initially). In addition, Dabura, unlike the other two, has shown UndyingLoyalty to Babidi. He is also warning Babidi that Buu is uncontrollable and will turn on him.\\

Only after a massive beating and Cooler literally flying through his Kaioken Kamehameha completely unharmed does he finally use Super Saiyan to put Cooler down. This is likely down to the writers of the film assuming that entering Super Saiyan wasn't something Goku could do at will, which was only implied in the manga two months before the film's release; the film came out just a matter of days after Goku returned from Yardrat. This one is so odd that it's common to FanWank the entire film as an AlternateUniverse where Goku hasn't unlocked the form yet.\\
Worse: In the next movie, Return of Cooler, Goku does the exact same mistake again during the first part of his fight with Meta-Cooler. Thankfully, he wises up after Cooler hurls him into a mountain and immediately goes Super Saiyan before too long... not that it does him any good.

* After barely defeating the first Meta-Cooler, Goku and Vegeta realize that there's a whole army of Meta-Coolers at the distance, which would eventually overwhelm the two saiyans.\\
You'd expect: That Cooler just kill Goku and Vegeta using the Meta-Coolers army, now that he has the chance.\\
Or: If Cooler wants so bad to torture Goku and Vegeta, he could, again, use the Meta-Cooler army to do that, instead of taking them to his way more vulnerable body, giving them a chance of destroy him.\\

Or: Even if one wish was used with the original wishes as per canon being done, Goku asks King Kai exactly when the Saiyans will arrive. This is so that he can arrange a time for his friends to gather the Dragon Balls and make the wish, Kami to meet him at the check-in station so that there is plenty of time to meet the Z-Fighters, bring some senzu beans from Korin on the way down the Lookout (which he does in canon) and create a strategy on how to beat the Saiyans. With how long Snake Way is, Goku would definitely need an ample amount of time to travel from King Kai's planet to Earth. \\

* The Z-Fighters all know that the Saiyans are arriving and all met up on the day they arrived.\\
You'd Expect: They would formulate a strategy on how to take down the Saiyans with what information they have. Piccolo knows that they likely cannot sense power levels given that Raditz used a Scouter device where fighting from a distance would be the better option. Krillin has an attack that can pierce through anything (Destructo Disk) while possibly Piccolo and a healthy Tien could too (fully charged Special Beam Cannon and Tri-Beam), giving them at least one attack to hurt the Saiyans regardless of how big the power gap is. Chiaotzu's telekinesis on debris in the area and Yamcha's Spirit Ball could be a good way to distract the Saiyans from focusing their attacks. Gohan might not be able to do much, given his initial canon performance, but he can still come up with ways to distract the Saiyans while Krillin, Piccolo and Tien charge and aim their attacks.\\
Instead: No strategy was even considered to fight as a group to take the Saiyans down.\\
The result: All of them except Krillin and Gohan die. Yamcha dies from a Saibaman self-destructing (more explained below). Chiaotzu and Tien die trying to fight individually and barely made a dent into Nappa. Piccolo dies defending Gohan. Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan do try to fight as a team but both attempts failed: the first because of Gohan getting scared and the second plan failing because of Nappa training his tail unlike Raditz. The Z-Fighters were lucky that both Saiyans did not fight and only the much weaker Nappa did.
