* ''WhamEpisode/{{Danganronpa}}''

* ''Franchise/{{Danganronpa}}'' is filled with these every chapter, most of which usually come at the end of the games.
** In the first game, finding out that [[spoiler:Junko Enoshima, the SHSL/Ultimate Fashionista who gets killed off early in the game... not only faked her death, but is really the Mastermind and is the leader of SHSL/Ultimate Despair.]]
** The final chapter of ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair'' reveals not only were the students in the game part of Hope's Peak Academy... [[spoiler:they're also members of SHSL/Ultimate Despair who committed many atrocities. The island that you've spent the entire game on is really an artificial simulation like the Matrix, and Hajime Hinata is Izuru Kamukura, the man who started the Tragedy. He is also the one who not only brought Monokuma onto the island, but an AI version of Junko Enoshima]]!
** ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaV3KillingHarmony'''s final chapter contains quite possibly the most drastic twist in the whole series. After the reveal that [[spoiler: the mastermind is none other than Tsumugi Shirogane, who has made an effort to shape herself into a perfect copy of former SHSL/Ultimate Despair Junko Enoshima, her cosplaying skills lead her to dress as... Students from the first two games? Previously, it was elucidated to us by her that she can't cosplay as real people due to a medical condition, but this is flipped on its head by a horrifying realization. If she can't cosplay real people, but can cosplay the supposedly real students of Hope's Peak from the previous two games, what does that make them, and Danganronpa as a whole? The bombshell is eventually dropped by her that the first two Danganronpa games are works of fiction, and the entire killing game is a globally broadcast event done to sate the appetite of a peaceful, yet violence-starved world. On top of that, the identities of the killing game's victims are actually regular, non-talented students who willingly had their memories erased to make way for artificial identities that better suit Danganronpa.]]

* This is taken to a whole new level in ''VideoGame/{{Contra}}: Shattered Soldier'', where the worst ending has you and Lance Bean killed in cataclysmic fashion, and the men who sent you on your mission revealed to be tyrants who now have no one left to stop them. It is revealed in the best endings that they are responsible for the alien invasion of the first several games. Neo Contra ramps it up even further; in the worst ending, the BigBad ''blows up the planet''. Of course, this was simply Konami's friendly way of telling you to do a little better next time, rookie.

** It gets expanded even further with the release of DLC character Cassandra, whose Soul Chronicle interestingly involves her becoming active [[AdaptationalEarlyAppearance earlier in the plot]], this time starting her adventures in swordfighting right before her sister Sophitia's wedding rather than after Sophitia has children like in her first appearance in ''Soulcalibur II''. Sophitia ends up getting married at the end of it, with plans of having a child and granting Cassandra the blessing of naming thrm, so it seems not much has actually changed...until you continue and play the Prologue to the chapter, and find out just why Cassandra started so early: she was transported to [[EldritchLocation Astral Chaos]] after inspecting Sophitia's old weapons that she left behind, and there she met [[AlternateSelf herself from the original timeline]], who has become Malfested and become [[SanitySlippage completely insane]] from being stuck in Astral Chaos for so long to the point that she doesn't even remember her own name. Current Cassandra doesn't know if she can fully believe it, but it's clear that her setting off to find Sophitia is meant to [[ForWantOfANail alter the timeline]] in order to save her family and SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong. If there was any doubt that Zasalamel's story was proof of a timeline reset, Cassandra's story completely shattered it.

* In the normal ending of ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaIISimonsQuest'', Simon dies from his wounds. The "special" ending (take more than 8 days to finish) isn't much better; Dracula is dead, but so is Simon, and in fact the entire series.
** The bad ending to ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaDawnOfSorrow''. [[spoiler:Soma becomes Dracula after Celia kills a doppleganger of Mina. Getting this ending first will still unlock Julius Mode, where you use him, Yoko and Arikado (aka Alucard) to kill Soma.]] The good ending? After Celia failed to turn Soma into Dracula, Dmitri takes over the doppleganger's body and leaves with Celia to the Abyss. There, Dmitri kills Celia and, because he couldn't handle Dominance, turns into a giant abomination.]]
** ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaOrderOfEcclesia'' hits the player over the head with quite a doozy. If they rescue all of the villagers, then [[spoiler:after the fight with Albus, you find out his soul got absorbed into Dominus because he's been trying to figure out how to use Dominus for Shanoa because using the Dominus Glyph Union would kill it's user. He also apologizes for not being the one to do the ritual to take in the Dominus Glyphs because Barlowe sent him on a pointless errand. When you confront Barlowe about all this, Shanoa will refuse to use Dominus to kill Dracula. Barlowe gets upset because he's so close to ''releasing'' Dracula, which was what Dominus was ''supposed'' to do. Then after defending yourself from Barlowe, he ''sacrifices himself'' to release Dracula. Cue the summoning of Casltevania and the final act of the game.]]

When Aleph learns that the player intends to find a way to leave New Wirral, he teleports the player to a dead world to get rid of them. *** One for the entire ''VideoGame/LittleTailBronx'' mythos-- [[spoiler:it's revealed that through using the data found within the mysterious Juno relics, humanity of the Old World was able to harness Crystals as a new form of energy and greatly advance their civilization, but this also resulted in fossil fuels plummeting in value, causing economies that couldn't keep up with these advancements to collapse. As a result of tensions between nations worsening, human civilization ended up collapsing into a brutal world war, with them creating Titano-Machina like Lares and Lemures from their Juno to use as superweapons. With massive death, destruction and the biosphere of the planet at risk of complete destruction thanks to the Titano-Machina rampages, the Juno personality AI known as Yurlungur proposed the "Reset" command to a set group of human researchers, which they activated. * ''WhamEpisode/XenobladeChronicles''

* ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles1'': ...Where do we ''start?''
** The beginning of the game, [[spoiler:when Fiora is brutally murdered]].
** [[spoiler:Discovering the Faced Mechon are Homs cyborgs, and one of the them is Fiora, who is still alive.]]
** [[spoiler:Meeting [[BigBad Egil]] for the first time.]]
** [[spoiler:Dickson shooting Shulk, revealing himself to be evil all along.]]
** [[spoiler:The High Entia being transformed into Telethia for Zanza's army.]]
** [[spoiler:And the ending, where Alvis reveals that he is a computer that, along with Zanza and Meyneth, destroyed our universe and created the ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles1'' one in its place.]]
* ''VideoGame/XenobladeChroniclesX'':
** Chapter 5, in which [[spoiler:Cross gets their arm blown off, revealing [[AlienBlood blue blood]] and [[RoboticReveal metal servos]].]]
** Chapter 8, in which [[spoiler:the Ganglion attack NLA and successfully steal The Vita.]]
** Chapter 11, in which [[spoiler:Lao is revealed to be a traitor and steals an experimental Skell, The Prog Ares, and the revelation that the selection process for who made it aboard the [[TheArk White Whale]] wasn't as fair as previously thought.]]
** Chapter 12. Nearly everything, but especially the realization that the internal structure of the Lifehold Core was destroyed upon crash-landing, and yet the mimeosomes that sustain the physical life of humans still work just fine.
* ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles2'' gives the first one a run for its money with the twists.
** Chapter 2 starts with the death of Rex's guardian Azurda. [[spoiler:Then promptly ''un''-does it for maximum MoodWhiplash.]]
** In Chapter 3, Rex's newfound mentor figure and the newest party member, Vandham, is killed by Torna and Pyra transforms into Mythra for the first time.
** Chapter 6 acts as an even larger turning point. Torna attacks once again, but wins thanks to Jin, leading to Pyra being kidnapped and later tortured to achieve Torna's goals, sending Rex into a HeroicBSOD.
** Chapter 7: Nia ends up having her backstory revealed, and is actually a Flesh Eater, in addition, she admits her feelings towards Rex. Pyra and Mythra also want to meet the Architect so they can kill them. Following that, Rex gets another power boost via Pyra and Mythra's new form.
** Chapter 8: The world under the Cloud Sea and Alrest is a destroyed dystopian city called the Land of Morytha[[note]] which looks eerily similar to our world[[/note]], and the World tree is actually a giant mechanical building.
** Chapter 10. All of it. For one, upon finally reaching Elysium, you learn that it has become a barren wasteland with not a single creature, living or mechanical, in sight. Furthermore, the Architect is actually Klaus, the human version of Zanza prior to the experiment that created the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 1. However, he was split in two because of the experiment, and ''this'' Klaus chose to make a new world out of the remains of the old one, leading to the creation of Alrest, Blades, Titans, and the Cloud Sea. Not only that, but due to the imminent destruction of Zanza, Klaus's time is running out, and he sends the heroes to take care of Malos and Artifice Aion.
* Unsurprisingly, ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles3'' has quite a few twists and turns that match up with its predecessors:
** The first has to be, no doubt, with the end of the first chapter, where Noah and friends first meet Mio and friends. In it, [[PosthumousCharacter Guernica Vandham]] shows them the true conflict that they are up against, and what they need to stop. They gain the [[FusionDance Ouroboros]] powers, and they come into conflict with the first Moebius that they meet [[spoiler: who is Interlinked D and J]].
** The end of Chapter 4 is another major one. It is when the gang finally reaches Keves castle, and stop N from firing the DoomsdayDevice. They encounter D and J for first time together, and learn about the concept of what Moebius interlinking is truly capable of. Once they reach the Queen of Keves, they learn that [[spoiler: the Queen is a fake, and that the Moebius has been ruling the castle for this entire time. The heroes get their first glance at [[TheDragon N]], and see just what he’s capable of and that he and M are indeed alternate versions of Noah and Mio.]]
** The middle of Chapter 5 doesn’t have conflict, but it still gives the gang a proper introduction to the people of the city, one of their most reliable allies for the rest of the game. They learn about the proper way that humans should live their lives, and helps motivate them to continue the rest of their quest.
** The ending of Chapter 5 and the beginning of Chapter 6. Where the hell do we even begin? It is easily the most iconic part of the entire game, and is incredibly impactful in its entirety. It’s basically the “[[WesternAnimation/{{Amphibia}} True Colors]]” of this game. To start off, This is what gives us a true introduction to N and M, and shows us just how powerful they are. [[spoiler: The heroes put more effort into fighting than they ever have before, yet despite their best efforts, they actually lose in the end. They spend a month in prison as N gleefully awaits for [[YourDaysAreNumbered Mio’s time to end]]. This is the only time where Noah is at a true loss of hope and anger, and puts him in a truly helpless position. When the month is up, N publicly executes Mio, as he eagerly awaits her death, all while Noah and friends helplessly watch the whole thing. Right before the big moment, though Noah learns about N’s backstory, and why an alternate version of himself [[FaceHeelTurn would turn evil]]. It really looks like Mio is actually dead, but in a sudden turn of events, the Mio that died was actually M, and that she [[FreakyFridayFlip switched bodies with Mio]] [[HeroicSuicide so that the latter could live]]. Once N finds out. ''He'' is the one who is helpless, as Noah unlocks the true power of the Lucky 7]].
** The Ending, the end of Chapter 7. It’s when [[spoiler: the gang finally reached Z, and where they strive to stop the terrible status quo that he has set on this world. He tries to weaken their morale by showing their their deepest regrets, but they each resist, and show just how far each of them has come on their journey. Z ends up merging with Origin, and threatens to destroy the entire world. This encourages all of Aionios to join in on fighting, where they unleash all of their men on Z’s army. The heroes that the gang has recruited throughout the adventure all come together to aid them all one last time, and in the end, Melia and Nia join in to finally end Z once and for all. Once he’s in a vulnerable state N and M, then [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice themselves for real]] to destroy him once and for all. With Z gone, the two worlds must now separate for good, and the main gang must part ways. Even though they cannot join the new world together, it is much preferable to the world that they once had, and it’s clear that they will always remember each other]].

* ''WhamEpisode/KingdomHearts''

* ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'':
** The Hollow Bastion chapter of ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsI''. Maleficent dies (or so we think), it's revealed that Ansem (Xehanort's Heartless) is the real BigBad and Kairi's heart was inside Sora all along, Riku loses his body, Sora turns himself into a heartless to bring Kairi back[[note]](this one event resulted in both Roxas' and Naminé's birth, setting the stage for the next several games)[[/note]], Kairi [[CooldownHug hugs Sora to save him]], and they leave Hollow Bastion but leave the keyhole open, allowing a lot more powerful Heartless to flood through.
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsChainOfMemories'':
*** Twilight Town in Sora's storyline is basically a long string of foreshadowing for the existence of Roxas and the point we start to realize Marluxia's plan.
*** Floor 12 of Castle Oblivion in ''Chain of Memories''. It's revealed that Naminé is manipulating Sora's memories and the Riku Sora's been fighting is a replica, while he's been playing into the Organization's hands all along.
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII'':
*** During the third visit to Hollow Bastion, we learn Ansem from the first game was an imposter. That imposter is the Heartless of the real Ansem's apprentice, Xehanort, and the leader of [[BigBadEnsemble Organisation XIII]] is his Nobody.
*** It is casually revealed early in the game that Mickey trains in the arts of Keyblade from [[WesternAnimation/{{Fantasia}} Yen Sid]], though since he is never shown wielding it, it is easy to dismiss this. Near the end of the game, ''[[DamselInDistress Kairi]]'' is shown wielding the Keyblade. Keyblade wielders are [[UniquenessDecay so commonplace in later games]], but by this point, the only people who can wield the weapon are Sora (and by extension, his Nobody, Roxas), Riku, and Mickey, all facts that have been established since the series beginning. In the first game, being able to wield the Keyblade is a big deal (Sora and Riku got into a messy fight for this). Suddenly, you have to wonder whether there are more people who could wield the thing...
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts358DaysOver2'': The final two days of the game are a doozy. On Day 357, Roxas finally gets the full story about Xion, only to be forced to kill her in self-defense ([[SuicideByCop which Xion wanted]], as it would let him take her memories back to Sora). And 358... well, that was when ''Deep Dive'' happened.
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep'':
*** Xehanort is an old man in this game, but why is he younger in the previous games? [[GrandTheftMe He hijacked Terra's body]] at the end of the latter's campaign. The man who became Ansem the Wise's apprentice is Xehanort inside Terra's body.
*** Castle Oblivion was once a refuge of Keyblade wielders called the Land of Departure. It became what it is now because Aqua cast a spell that transformed it in order to hide Ventus' body. The room where he is, the Chamber of Waking, is what the Organization XIII is really after in ''Chain of Memories'' and ''358/2 Days''.
*** Ventus' heart took up residence inside Sora's heart when the latter was four and has not left him since. Right, for the majority of the first game's events, Sora hosts ''three'' hearts[[note]]His own, Ventus', and Kairi's[[/note]] inside him. On another note, this is also the reason why Roxas looks similar to Ventus and is possibly why he can [[DualWielding dual wield]] Keyblades.
*** "Reconnect. Kingdom Hearts" [[SequelHook Secret Ending]]. After watching it for the first time, and with the general knowledge of what happened in the game, as well as the rest of the series, you'd understand the feeling of watching [[TheHero the kid who was looking for his friends]] become [[MessianicArchetype someone who has to save]] ''any'' good person who has received a FateWorseThanDeath.
*** The Secret Ending shows the that worlds consumed by darkness aren't destroyed...
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsCoded'''s secret ending reveals that Xehanort is ''alive''.
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts3DDreamDropDistance'''s endgame is the biggest wham episode yet. There are so many plot twists and reveals that it turns the series' KudzuPlot up a notch.
*** The cutscenes before and after Sora fights Xemnas, which basically topple the series' plot head over heel. Not only do we find out that Nobodies, as well as other being who could think and feel, could grow hearts all along, but the Nobodies' whole purpose was to be used as Xehanort's clones. Not only this, but Xehanort allowed the Heartless into the Realm of Light (and by extension, created the Nobodies) in order to gather more possible vessels. Also, time travel exists and has been used by Xehanort to bring his new vessels to the present, including his Heartless (Ansem), his Nobody (Xemnas), and his younger self (erstwhile unseen, unless you count ''Birth by Sleep: Final Mix'', albeit voiceless and under a hood), all of whom are part of the new Organization XIII. And ''Sora'' is their next target as a vessel, although the heroes manage to prevent it at the last minute.
*** The revelation about intelligent beings having hearts mean that Roxas and Naminé have hearts. And possibly Xion as well. Kairi is holding two hearts[[note]]Her own and Naminé's[[/note]] inside her, while Sora is holding '''''four'''''[[note]]His own, Ventus', Roxas', and Xion's[[/note]] hearts inside him!
*** The epilogue reveals that Xehanort wants to recreate the χ-Blade. Having learned [[VideoGame/KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep twelve years ago]] that simply involving one person was not enough, he plans the thirteen-membered True Organization XIII to clash with the seven Guardians of Light in a second Keyblade War to recreate the weapon.
*** The last seconds of the epilogue also shows that Axel/Lea is a Keyblade wielder.
*** The secret ending shows Yen Sid recruiting Kairi to help stop Xehanort.
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsIII'':
*** Xehanort's Heartless Guardian is actually Terra's Heartless; he has been forced to serve Xehanort since his body hijacking.
*** Xehanort shatters Kairi in the climax of the Keyblade War, forcing Sora to save her using the Power of Waking. He had used the power previously to wake Ventus and save the Guardians of Light from certain death and came out fine. But three turns out to be a bad number; Sora disappears from the present world and wakes up in [[UpTheRealRabbitHole Shibuya]].
*** By the end of the game, the forces of light manage to save Aqua, wake Ventus, recreate Roxas and Naminé, and restore Terra. Xion is also brought back, albeit by the villains, through [[UnexplainedRecovery unexplained reasons]].
*** During the final battle against Xehanort in Scala ad Caelum (his and Eraqus's childhood home), the player may notice that the remnants of another world lay upside down and crumbling under the ocean surrounding the town. That other world is Daybreak Town, an ancient world from "the age of fairytales," and the "nexus from which all other worlds spring."

* ''WhamEpisode/FinalFantasy''

* The majority of ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' games throw one in just when it feels like a major plot is being resolved.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyII'': Your party has just slain the Emperor and celebrations are underway. But then a soldier rushes in and reveals that [[TheDragon the Dark Knight]] is Leon, Maria's brother, and that he has taken up the mantle of Emperor. Upon confronting Leon at Palamecia Castle, the Emperor rises from Hell in demonic form. Ricard, your current GuestStarPartyMember and the [[LastOfHisKind last of the Dragoons]], performs a HeroicSacrifice so the others can escape.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyV'', where Exdeath squashes two worlds together and combines this with the death of Galuf and a rare lack of ForgotAboutHisPowers.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI'', where Kefka destroys the world.
** Before ItWasHisSled, [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Aeris/Aerith]] getting KilledOffForReal in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII''. It didn't stop. [[spoiler:Add in the first scene at North Crater where Cloud [[HeroicBSOD loses his sanity]], gives Sephiroth the Black Materia which lets him cast Meteor, causes the [=WEAPONs=] to be unleashed, and wrapped in the candy coating that is Sephiroth has actually been dead this whole time and the one who you've been chasing around the world was actually ''Jenova'' (Who, admittedly, was under the control of puppetmaster Sephiroth).]]
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII'', when we learn that the Sorceress Edea raised everyone in the party at an orphanage.
** Half of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX'' consists of this. In addition to discovering the sinister origins of Zidane, [[spoiler:one city's population slaughtered in a surprise assault, another one nuked, summoned EldritchAbomination crushes one more city]]...and the situation goes even more downhill from there. Every time you think "This can't be going on any more!" you get the next wham.
** There's also the scene in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'' in Zanarkand, where [[spoiler:Yunalesca tells the party that Sin is eternal, and that every Final Aeon that defeats Sin will become Sin in its place. Tidus is simply part of a dream of the fayth, who will wake up if you complete the game. You then move forward realizing that finishing the game will essentially mean the "death" of Tidus]].
*** The events in Home offer another good one. Tidus has a major FreakOut when he learns of the only way to defeat Sin: [[spoiler:[[HeroicSacrifice for Yuna to die]]]]--and everyone knew this without telling him. For the rest of the game, he is determined to come up with some other way to beat Sin.
*** But before all of those, you get Operation Mi'ihen. It's an attempt to beat Sin using what we would consider conventional weaponry (as opposed to the Final Aeon). It is an out-and-out massacre, including one of ThoseTwoGuys dying. [[spoiler:Which one of them dies depends on some choices you made earlier, which seemed pretty irrelevant at the time. Operation Mi'ihen is also the first clue that Yevon [[CorruptChurch isn't as nice as it seems]].]]
** Everything after Leblanc's hideout and before Chapter 3 in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2''. Also, the Den of Woe. Still freaky, even if you know it's coming. And it makes so much of the game (and Paine's backstory) make much more sense.
** In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII'' when the party reaches Giruvegan and Ashe has a meeting with the Occuria.
** Chapter 8 of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII'' starts out as a BreatherEpisode. [[TheReveal It doesn't]] [[TearJerker stay that way]].
*** Chapter 9, [[spoiler:The Primarch is a fal'Cie, one of you must become Ragnarok]].
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'':
*** The Main Scenario quest "All Good Things"; you return triumphant from your battle with Titan, only to find [[spoiler:Garlean forces invaded the headquarters of the Scions and [[EverybodysDeadDave killed nearly everyone]], forcing you to seek sanctuary at the church near Drybone Camp.]]
*** "Lady of the Vortex": Following your battle with Garuda, the Primal of Wind, [[spoiler:she not only proves to be too powerful to be beaten by normal means, but she ''re-summons'' Ifrit and Titan so she can steal their powers. Just when [[FromBadToWorse it looks like you can't get any more screwed]], the Garleans show up and reveal Ultima Weapon, a living superweapon that ''literally'' eats the other three Primals and absorbs their powers]].
*** "The Parting Glass", the penultimate quest of the 2.5 patch, is very much this. At what is supposed to be a celebratory banquet, the Sultana is assassinated and the player and Scions framed for it, the Crystal Braves company that the player had spent the previous few patches helping to build up is revealed to be corrupt and responsible for the assassination, and the other Scions sacrifice themselves to allow the player to escape. The player and few remaining Scions are now wanted criminals in Ul'dah and hunted by the Crystal Braves, and forced to find refuge in the isolationist state of Ishgard. [[DisneyDeath It gets better pretty quickly]] in ''Heavensward''.
*** The end of Patch 4.4 of ''Stormblood'' quickly turns the ''entire story'' on its head: [[spoiler:It's revealed that Solus zos Galvus, the beloved late first Emperor of the Garlean Empire, is actually alive and well... and an Ascian. Always has and always will be. The Empire's desire to eradicate the Primals and unite the world under its leadership? ''A big fat lie'' -- all done to sow chaos so the Ascians' one true God, Zodiark, can be revived. This suddenly turns virtually every event and quite a few characters' involvements on its head.]]
*** EVERY LAST BIT of Shadowbringers/5.0 winds up being this to the entire story to this point! [[spoiler:The ''Ascians'' were the original form of humanity from the unfragmented world, and THEY created the first and most powerful of all primals...'''ZODIARK AND HYDAELYN.''' Created to save the world from an apocalyptic calamity by rewriting the laws of the universe, humanity sacrificed half of itself to create Zodiark (whom promptly branded the sitting thirteen leaders of Ascian civilization, who we know as the Overlords), then half of what remained to have the God of Darkness restore all the damage done. However, another half of the remnants (essentially one eighth of what the original population had been) felt that too much was being given to the dark god and created Hydaelyn, His counterpart of Light. Their battle ended with Hydaelyn's victory, as she struck a final blow so incredible it blasted thirteen dimensional shards from the universe to create lesser parallel dimensions, all in 'orbit' around the now-incomplete Source. Solus zos Galvus is revealed to be one of the three 'whole' Overlords who escaped the fragmentation and is known as Emet-Selch, who not only created Garlemald but ancient Allag as well. G'raha Tia is also here as the Crystal Exarch, but from a BadFuture wherein the collapse and Rejoining of the First results in the Eighth Umbral Calamity, a global release of Black Rose across the entire Source that kills nearly everyone, including you and every Scion. The Ironworks of this future toil to augment the Syrcus Tower to be able to travel through space and time, and the Exarch goes back in time to the First to SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong, defeating Sin Eaters across the planet to drive back a malaise of light that was PLANNED by the Ascians all along to cause another Rejoining. Over the course of the adventure, you discover that you are a fragmented Ascian yourself, the Warrior of Darkness Ardbert is likewise, both being splintered from Emet-Selch's best friend in the Ascian capital of Amaurot. This all ends with you FINALLY fighting the founder of Garlemald and Allag to the death deep within the illusory recreation of the city, in order to save the kidnapped Exarch and prevent knowledge of the augmented Tower - that not even the Tower's creator understands completely - from being used to cause more Rejoinings. It also bears mentioning that Emet-Selch, true name '''HADES''', is by and far the strongest Ascian ever fought, revealing that the Overlords were taken a lil too for granted against the Warrior of Light. And as the cherry on top of this cake of twists and turns, TheStinger shows that Zenos yae Galvus, the Garlean prince who the Warrior saw ''die'' after the final battle of ''Stormblood'', managed to [[BackFromTheDead cheat death]] by using his artificial Echo to hijack another body until he drove the Ascian Elidibus from his body, took his body back, ''[[TheKingslayer killed his father, the current Emperor]]'', and now vows to take the power of Hydaelyn and Zodiark for himself just so he can get another crack at the Warrior!]]
*** On a more lighthearted note is the trial Kugane Ohashi from the [[DenserAndWackier Hildebrand questline]] in ''Stormblood'', which starts with the players fighting Yojimbo, the mercenary swordsman and a boss previously encountered in a post-game dungeon. [[spoiler:''Then [[BackgroundMusicOverride "Battle on the Big Bridge" kicks in]] as Yojimbo reveals himself to be none other than Gilgamesh!'']]
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXV'' has the Leviathan trial, which ends very badly for all involved: [[spoiler:Ardyn shanks Luna, and Ignis gets blinded offscreen]].
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyTactics'' might challenge ''IX'' for the most Wham-tastic game in the series.
*** At the end of Chapter 1, Delita and Ramza's lives get changed in a major way.
*** About three storyline battles later, you learn that Gafgarion is not what he seems.
*** Then, in the last battle of Chapter 2, you learn what the Church is really hiding. Those are just selections. There's Wham candidates after every battle.

* ''WhamEpisode/DragonAge''

* ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins'' has the Battle of Ostagar. Beforehand, it seemed like a fairly normal high fantasy story where the armies of Ferelden were going to triumph over the evil Darkspawn. Then, Loghain betrays the king and plunges Ferelden into hopeless civil war, leaving it helpless against the Darkspawn.
** The Joining was a Wham too, for a few reasons - The nature of the Joining itself, the temporary player characters (who you've been with long enough to have developed a care for how they fare) develop a bad case of dead, one courtesy of the Joining and the other courtesy of Duncan [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomping him]].
*** Same thing in ''Awakening'', where one of the companions you start the initial quest with dies in the Joining.
** TheReveal that a Grey Warden must sacrifice his/her life and ''soul'' to permanently end a Blight, and the deal Morrigan offers as a loophole. This is when it becomes painfully clear that a truly happy ending isn't going to happen -- victory ''will'' have a price.
*** Unless you managed to turn Loghain - though in that case, you'd have gotten an early bit of Wham from Alistair leaving your group, [[SoLongAndThanksForAllTheGear taking his equipment with him]].
* ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' has a few of these, but really, what else can you say but: [[spoiler:Anders plants a bomb in the Chantry and murders not only everyone inside it but also at least a few people in nearby buildings too (WordOfGod says the death toll is around a hundred), all just to remove the only thing that kept the conflict between the mages and the Templars from turning violent. As the status quo is unacceptable, he thinks its better for the mages to die trying to destroy the Templars than to slowly be killed or made tranquil one by one. This really hits double hard if your Hawke is in a romance with him]].
** To a lesser degree, Isabela's quests at the end of Act 2. [[spoiler:The Qunari have been in the city for all these years because Isabela stole a sacred relic from them and they know the thief is still somewhere in the city. When they find out that the thief is a companion of the unofficial representative the city has sent to negotiate with them, relations turn sour quickly and the Arishok decides the time for a discrete search is over and he has to take control of the city himself.]]
** One of the worst is the quest "All That Remains," in which you discover that [[spoiler:Hawke's mother has been abducted by a serial killer because she looks like his dead wife, whom he's trying to recreate through stitching women together through necromancy. Leandra provides the face]]. The game's especially brutal about giving you hope that she's still alive, right until the climax of the quest in the killer's lair. This quest also leads to another WhamEpisode late in the game, when [[spoiler:First Enchanter Orsino uses the research of the serial killer--who, in the Templar ending, it's revealed that he'd been secretly colluding with--to become a Harvester monster to fight off Meredith's Templars]].
** While the ''Legacy'' DLC was somewhat unremarkable for most of it, the end drop a massive lore bomb, by introducing and awakening Corypheus, one of the ancient magisters who invaded the Golden City and became the first Darkspawn. [[spoiler:This also provided a first look at the main antagonist of ''Inquisition''.]]
** Merrill's final companion quest (ignoring the later conversation quest unlocked at 100% friendship/rivalry) arguably qualifies. After spending the greater part of a decade partnering with a demon to try to fix an ancient mirror to reclaim centuries of lost knowledge and culture taken away from her people, she learns that [[spoiler:Marethari, her mentor from her old clan, allowed the demon to possess her to protect Merrill, and you must now kill her to destroy it once and for all]]. On top of that, unless you pick the right dialogue choice, [[spoiler:the rest of her clan will attack your party out of outrage at their keeper's death, forcing you to kill them. [[DownerEnding The mirror doesn't even get fixed]]]].
* ''VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition'':
** "In Your Heart Shall Burn" drastically changes the scope of the story: [[spoiler:You finally manage to close the Breach for good, only for the Elder One's forces to attack Haven. The Mages or Templar (which ever faction you didn't side with), have joined the Elder One. The Elder One is revealed to be Corypheus from the previous game's ''Legacy'' DLC. Corypheus reveals that he created the Mark and therefore it is not divine. Corypheus destroys Haven, but Solas brings the Inquisition to the fortress of Skyhold. Lastly, the Herald is made the Inquisitor]].
** "Here Lies the Abyss", the conclusion of the Grey Warden arc, consists of a massive siege on Adamant Fortress before the Inquisitor, their companions, Hawke, and a Grey Warden ally [[spoiler:take a trip to the Fade. There it is revealed that Divine Justinia V saved the Inquisitor as opposed to Andraste, and in the end the player needs to choose either Hawke or Stroud/Alistair/Loghain to stay behind in the Fade in a HeroicSacrifice to let the others escape]].
** "Revelations" is a particular Wham Episode among the companion quests. [[spoiler:Your Grey Warden companion, Blackwall, is actually Thom Rainier, a man who ordered the slaughter of a Lord and his family, then abandoned his men to take the fall while he went into hiding, eventually taking up the identity of Blackwall after the ''real'' Blackwall died protecting Rainier.]]
** The ''Trespasser'' DLC is basically one giant WhamEpisode from start to finish. Taking place a few years after the game's ending, it includes some lovely lore and story revelations like the fact that the elven gods worshiped by the Dalish were [[spoiler:actually all warring tyrannical mages who took lowlier elves as slaves]]; that [[spoiler:Fen'Harel, the "Dread Wolf" remembered as an amoral TricksterGod who imprisoned the other gods in Dalish tradition]], was actually [[spoiler:a rebel who liberated these slaves]]; that [[spoiler:the Veil that separates the physical world from the Fade was actually created by Fen'Harel to imprison these false gods at great cost to the elven people]]; and that [[spoiler:Fen'Harel]] survives today as [[spoiler:no other than your vanished former companion Solas, who now wishes to undo what he did and destroy the Veil to restore the elves to their former glory, at the cost of the likely destruction of everybody else]]. Oh, and if you [[spoiler:let the Iron Bull's friends die in his companion quest, he'll reveal that he secretly re-joined the Ben-Hassrath since you last met and has been spying for them ever since, after which you'll have to kill him in battle. [[PlayerPunch Even if you romanced him]]]]. Also, if you didn't [[spoiler:convince Cullen to give up lyrium, his memory is shown to be addled, and an epilogue slide reveals that he ends up a crazed homeless beggar to whom Scout Harding ultimately gives a MercyKill.]]

* ''WhamEpisode/DragaliaLost''

* ''VideoGame/DragaliaLost'' is absolutely ''filled to the brim'' with this:
** The Main Campaign:
*** It’s saying something when the ''very first chapter'' sets things up in a big way. It starts out fairly basic, with Euden, Zethia, and Notte going to the forest for Euden to form a pact with Midgardsormer, but things escalate very quickly when they meet an alternate version of Zethia, who warns them that there’s dangers ahead. After that, they meet, Elisanne and Ranzal, who would be some of their most trusted allies for the entire game. Euden forms a pact with Midgardsormer, and his servant, Cleo, also joins Euden and the gang. Zethia ends up getting kidnapped by The Other, and now it’s up to the gang to save her.
*** Chapter 5 is another major one. The gang go to the Binding Ruins, and there, they learn all about the history of King Aurelius, as well as meeting his pactwyrm, Zordiark. The Other leaves Aurelius’s body, but ends up possessing ''Zethia'' instead. The real Aurelius dies, and Euden and friends barely make it out unscathed.
*** In Chapter 10, the gang confront The Other in Clave Loy’elune. And they learn a part of Alberia’s ancient history. It turns out that this was where [[PostHumousCharacter Alberius]] initially fought The Other, and in a last-ditch effort, he, along with Cthonius, would seal him up in their own bodies while pactbound. The seal didn’t completely work, which is why The Other is still around, and it turns out that [[AndIMustScream Alberius is still there, still affected by The Other’s Magic]]. Although he is defeated, The Other isn’t, and all of Euden’s siblings decide to side with The Other, leaving him to the be only royal who can stop The Other.
*** Chapter 12 is when Euden finally confronts Leonidas, and their battle will help decide the fate of this corner of Alberia.
*** Chapter 14 is when Euden and friends finally confront The Other once and for all in the climactic showdown. There’s just one problem: [[spoiler: it gets interrupted. When Euden is about to offer his own body to The Other so that Zethia is no longer possessed, the possession gets interrupted when Beren defeats The Other with ease. Instead, the gang fight Volk instead, who is just there as a distraction, since Zethia ends up getting kidnapped yet again at the hands of the Agito. After this, the other Zethia comes to help. She explains who she is and where she came from, and with the other Zethia, now going by “Zena,” she and Euden agree to work together to help get this timeline’s Zethia back]].
*** In Chapter 19, the gang reaches the Fairy Kingdom, where they l finally get to learn Euden’s origins. [[spoiler: Nedrick originally died, and Aurelius, not wanting to lose his son, went to the Fairy Kingdom, where Nedrick would be cloned, thus creating the Euden that we know today. It’s also revealed that Euden’s body was created using The Other’s flesh, which means that he’s not entirely human.]]
*** Chapter 21 is when the gang reaches The World Tree, and they learn about how the mere world was created. [[spoiler: It was created by Bahamut and a mysterious figure called “The Progenitor.” The Progenitor wanted people to not have free will, so Bahamut did everything in his power to prevent that, even if it meant destroying worlds. Nedrick is close to forging his full pact with Bahamut, but Zethia finally decides to stand up for herself and forms the pact with Bahamut instead. Together, they are then all confronted by Phares and Beren, and it turns out that Phares is actually The Progenitor, who is controlling Phares’s body. This introduces The Progenitor as being the game’s true BigBad]].
*** Chapter 23 is when [[spoiler: The Progenitor finally awakens once and for all. The Citt of Grams is still devastated from the events of “Faith Forsaken,” so The Progenitor is there to add insult to injury. Beren has an internal conflict about what he’s doing, but ultimately decides to go along with The Progenitor’s plans. With his help, The Progenitor is able to leave Phares’s body, and reveals his true form and name, which is Xenos. Despite their best efforts, Euden and friends ultimately lose to Xenos, but hanks to Emile of all people coming in to save the day, they’re able to retreat as Xenos engulfs Grams in his wake]].
*** Chapter 25 is when [[spoiler: Xenos’s plan to destroy the multiverse is finally starting to come into fruition. Even with the Auspexes all powered up, it still isn’t enough. During their battle, Euden and Zena end up in the dystopian future that Zena is from. They confront this timeline’s version of Euden, who is still under The Other’s control. While they free him, it turns out that this Euden was EvilAllAlong, and was a pawn being used by Xenos. ''He'' is the true liege of Chronos. Zena finally confronts her past and kills her world’s Euden, and she agrees to help the main Euden defeat Xenos once and for all]].
*** Chapter 26 is the very last chapter, and hoo boy, does it live up to that. Now, the stakes are higher than ever, as [[spoiler: Xenos [[TheBadGuyWins actually succeeds]] in destroying the multiverse, and now, he just needs to create a new world where people don’t have free will. The gang confronts familiar enemy after familiar enemy, and some familiar enemies even help them out. They confront Beren, who unleashes the power of The Other, but in the end, he gets killed. The gang finally reach Xenos, and with the Auspexes power, they actually put up a fight. However, in order to stand a chance, they need a part of Xenos to host all of the magic. It turns out that The Other is Xenos’s heart, and Euden is made up of the part of the the heart that gives to others. He hosts the power of the Auspexes, and by everyone working together, they finally kill Xenos. The Auspexes then create a new world for everyone to live in, one where they can live their lives freely. However, it turns out that Xenos is still alive and is still trying to stop them. In a last ditch effort, Euden decides to confront Xenos all by himself. Using all of the bonds that he has gained throughout his journey, only then is when Xenos is finally killed for good. Sadly, since Euden is a part of Xenos, him dying means that Euden will die as well. He disappears, and everyone is living peacefully in the new world. Zethia begins to think that something is missing, but she is then greeted by a familiar face]].
** Events:
*** “Fractured Futures” is the first anniversary event, and it shows. It starts out innocent enough, with Euden in bed, as he encounters a small, kitten-like dragon named Chronos. Things escalate very quickly when Chronos takes Euden to the past, and he’s forced to watch Zethia get kidnapped by The Other yet again. Euden and Chronos end up in a dystopian future, where it’s revealed just what would happen if Euden fails to stop The Other. This really ups the stakes, as Euden now knows what he must stop in defeating The Other.
*** “Forgotten Truths” focuses on Ilia, the Goddess from 1,000 years ago. The event reveals what Zethia has been doing while she was possessed by The Other, and we even learn where The Other came from. [[spoiler: Ilia was once a fairly typical girl who knew alchemy. After being forced to use Alchemy for malicious purposes, she accidentally brings home a light. This light would turn out to be The Other, though presented as a friendly man named Mordecai. As the legend goes, Ilia forms a pact with Elysium as the legend goes, but it involves presumably killing Ilia. Ilia’s presumed death enrages Mordecai, turning him into Morsayati, The Other’s true form. While Mordecai gets freed, Morsayati still stands, leaving a climactic battle with the ancient past at stake]].
*** “Dawn of Dragalia” tells the story of of Alberius, and how he came to be known as Grastea’s greatest hero. He was once an ordinary man, but he wanted to do great things, so he went and befriended Midgardsormer. From there, he would go on many adventures, including recruiting Myriam and Cleo to his cause. He would then go on to shape Alberia into the kingdom that it is today.
*** Easily the climatic event to top them all of is none other than “Faith Forsaken.” It marks the climatic tic conclusion to the Apostles’ arc, and they all must work together to save the world. [[spoiler: The Church’s plan to revive Satan is almost complete, and the Apostles are running out of time and options to stop it. They try everything that they can, yet all of it remains futile. 665 innocent souls are sacrificed, and eventually, Satan reawakens. He brings destruction to all of Grams, as he comes close to destroying all of Grastea. The Apostles do all that they can, but even after the Angels sacrifice themselves, it still isn’t enough. It takes everyone, from all over the continent, to band together, and slay him and his fellow demons. With Euden’s help, the Apostles work together to finally seal Satan away once and for all, although, sadly, Origa is unable to be saved]].
*** Unlike the other events listed here, “Celestial Showdown” does tie into the main campaign, but that doesn’t make it any less impactful, as Hinomoto must defeat the leader of the Mukuroshu, and save Hinomoto once and for all. After spending a few New Years events antagonizing the Wyrmclan leader, all of them must work together to defeat Tsukuyomi.
*** “The Blood That Binds” is the only non-raid event listed here, but it marks the great reunion of the eight scions (barring Beren), as they must finally set aside their differences and defeat [[spoiler: a replica of Alberius himself]].
*** “Advent of the Origin” marks one of the game’s very last conflicts before the final battle. [[spoiler: True Bahamut has shown his face, and he is hell-bent on destroying The Progenitor by any means necessary, even if it means destroying every innocent life in existence. Euden and Zethia’s bonds are put to the test, as they must work together to defeat the most powerful foe that they have faced yet. Their bonds ultimately awaken as both Euden and Zethia unlock their [[EleventhHourSuperpower Bondforged Forms]], and prove to True Bahamut that the world doesn’t need to be destroyed in order to defeat The Progenitor]].
