The show was produced by Calico Creations to teach children about the dangers of pollution. In each episode, Widget contended with a villain wishing to exploit Earth's environment or natural resources, like Dr. Dante, Mega Slank and Widget's evil twin, Ratchet the World Trasher. In this respect, ''Widget, the World Watcher'' is very similar to ''CaptainPlanetAndThePlaneteers'', both heroes attempting to save the Earth from ecological harm.

* BrokenAesop - One episode featured Widget and his friends releasing a domesticated whale that had never known the ocean from its tank in a marine park. As the lesson of [[DownerEnding real-life whale Keiko taught us]], this... wouldn't end well...
** More of a case of ScienceMarchesOn; nobody ''knew'' that would happen when this show was made.

Added DiffLines:

* JekyllAndHyde - Human villain Dr. Dante's a subversion. His normal "Jekyll" side is still a villain, but his "Hyde" persona takes things UpToEleven and is AlwaysChaoticEvil.

Added DiffLines:

* HowDoIShotWeb - In the first couple episodes Widget seems to still be figuring out his shapeshifting powers, or at least what Earth animals are like so he can change into accurate ones.

*** [[GlamourFailure They do when notice his hair ("topnotch") and tail don't transform]], though, and it was even a PlotPoint in a few episodes.

* AccidentalMisnaming - In almost every episode, Widget gets a message from two of his planet's elders that give him his mission. The male elder almost never gets Widget's name right, and the one time he DOES, Widget can't believe it.
-->Male Elder: World Watcher Widget...
-->Widget: At your servi...Jumping Jupiter! You got my name right!!
-->Male Elder: Huh? Oh...

** MisappliedPhlebotinum - You know all those ShapeShifting aliens who hang out in human form for no reason (outside of [[CoconutSuperpowers saving a bunch of money on special effects]])? Yeah. Well, instead of hanging out in human form, Widget would disguise himself as a human by [[RummageFail wearing a goofy disguise]]. The fact that Widget doesn't change color when he changes shape was probably [[AFormYouAreComfortableWith for the very young viewer's benefit]]. There is an episode where he changes himself into one of Ratchet's goons. He's [[UnusuallyUninterestingSight still bright purple]], but it fools Ratchet.

There is an episode where Nobody on Widget's side of the screen seems to notice his coloration, no matter what form he changes himself into one of Ratchet's goons. He's [[UnusuallyUninterestingSight still bright purple]], but takes. Even when he uses it fools Ratchet.to impersonate a bad guy's henchman now and then.
