** Roy Mustang has Ed beat in terms of dickery. He's so much this that he has to be ''taught'' how to be compassionate by Riza...and even ''then'' he screws it up.

* EvilCannotComprehendGood: In episode six, Alphonse establishes that Tucker could've simply not made a chimera at all if [[spoiler:Edward]] was no longer an option to use. Tucker's response is to say "I don't follow" and then "See, that's the part where you're losing me". This ultimately confirms to Al that Tucker is BeyondRedemption and he gives Ed permission to kill him.

!!Tropes
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Alphonse is this for Rose in the first episode.
* AdaptationalJerkass:
** Edward Elric is depicted as a selfish prick who doesn't seem particularly sympathetic to his brother's plight, instead obsessing over getting his leg back due to it having been complimented by his DisappearedDad.
** Maes Hughes is depicted as an annoying prankster who is outright despised by his wife Gracia, contrasting the pair's HappilyMarried (borderline SickeninglySweethearts) dynamic in canon.
* DaddyIssues: Ed and Al have this, but especially Ed, who desperately tries to use the ever-apathetic Roy as a substitute for his DisappearedDad and is obsessed with getting his leg back because his father praised its ball kicking skills once.
* TheFundamentalist: The people of Liore, but especially Rose. Ed, being a HollywoodAtheist, is quick to trample all over this. Subverted with [[SinisterMinister Father Cornello]], the guy making them fundamentalists, who is faking his piety.
* KnightOfCerebus: Shou Tucker, oddly enough. While he still has comedic moments, Tucker's MoralEventHorizon of [[spoiler:turning his own daughter into a body horror abomination]] is played one hundred percent straight, with little to no comedy to it whatsoever, and Al even ends up deciding to let Ed kill Tucker for it after the latter makes it clear he's beyond all remorse.
* PetTheDog: Edward immediately loves Nina and [[ToThePain gives a very detailed and specific description]] of what he'd do to anyone who hurts her. [[spoiler:He ends up doing this to her father]].
* RunningGag: Everyone mistakes Edward for a girl, mainly because of Roy Mustang. Ed also tends to react violently (except towards [[MoralityPet Nina]]).
* VillainSong: At the end of episode six, [[spoiler:Shou Tucker]] does a cover of [[VideoGame/{{Portal}} "Still Alive"]].
