* RunningGag: After Cuphead and Shovel Knight have befriended one another, Shovel Knight keeps referring to Mugman as "Mugsie", which repeatedly causes Cuphead to burst into laughter.
* SuddenlyVoiced: After having spent two episodes being a SilentProtagonist, Cuphead is fully voiced come "Cuphead VS Choo-Choo Charles".
* SuperMode: Nightmare Mode for Sans and Bendy, both become significantly more powerful than they were before but to be specific:
** Sans goes from a GlassCannon OneHitPointWonder to a LightningBruiser that can [[EyeBeams fire lasers from his eyes]], NoSell attacks strong enough to shake the ground and create a massive GuardianEntity out of a Gaster Blaster that can fight for him, though it does drain his energy significantly.
** Bendy on the other hand, turns from an already powerful demon to a veritable monster, capable of [[ThinkingUpPortals creating portals]] to either attack from a distance, block attacks or even swap places with opponents, sending foes into a pocket dimension filled with Nightmare versions of the Butcher Gang and even combine Nightmare Mode with his [[OneWingedAngel Beast form]].
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Nightmare Mode is portrayed as this for Cuphead. On one hand, Cuphead is [[PaintItBlack turned solid black]] with fuchsia GlowingEyesOfDoom and identically colored flames coming off of his straw and doesn't speak a word throughout his fight against the Devil. On the other hand, said fight doesn't go too well ''for the Devil'', seeing as Cuphead is now durable enough to tank his attacks head-on, [[FlashStep moves fast enough to appear like he's teleporting]], and his FingerGun projectile attacks have been enhanced to BulletHell levels of insanity. Come his encounter with Tricky, however, this form is destroyed, leaving Cuphead to take him and similar foes on with only his usual abilities.
* ThinkingUpPortals: A common trend between the three users of Nightmare Mode is some kind of portal generation ability. Bendy has ones he can use in combat to extend his attack range or defend himself, whereas Cuphead and Sans seem to be limited to the iconic ''Indie Cross'' dimensional rifts.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Of the five poster characters of the series, Frisk is the only one outwardly hostile, having attacked both the Knight and Madeline during the first episode.
* TheVoiceless: [[VideoGame/HollowKnight The Knight]] and [[VideoGame/{{Undertale}} Frisk]], as per canon. [[FunWithSubtitles The subtitles temporarily avert this for the Knight, though.]]
* YourSoulIsMine: The Devil tries to pull this on Nightmare Cuphead during their fight. [[NoSell It hurts the Devil far more than it does Cuphead.]]
