* DrowningPit: In episode 19, the eliminated contestants attempt to escape from the [=TLC=]. This fails, and the [=TLC=] falls into the lake, with water slowly pouring in. Fortunately, the rising sun lifts the TLC out of the lake just in time.

* {{Nice G|uy}}irl: Leafy. [[spoiler: Subverted in the last episode when she selfishly buys Dream Island for herself, alienating the other contestants (sans Firey).]]

** A few of the recommended characters in 'Vomitaco' are [[Anime/{{Pokemon}} Ash and Brock]]. [[Franchise/SuperMario Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and a poorly-drawn clone of Luigi]] appear in [[ExcitedShowTitle Bowling, Now with Explosions!]]

In August 29, 2019, American book company Scholastic published an official character guide for the show, which describes all the 64 contestants.

And then a fourth, more silly, random, surreal, looser, and oddly dark season, named ''WebAnimation/BattleForBFDI'', came into existence on November 3rd, 2017. It has all the BFDI and BFDIA characters in it, including the ones flung to the LOL, along with some new characters, for a total of '''64''' contestants--the hosts, Four and X, came from a previous animation called "X Finds Out His Value."

** The following case is UpToEleven: The first and last words spoken in the first season was "yeah", said by Match to Pencil. Pencil even lampshades this just before it happens.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Pretty much every contestant qualifies as one, but most notably Puffball, Rocky, and Yellow Face. X is this in BFB, but it's UpToEleven with 4, who are almost an EldritchAbomination in their own right.

** "Gardening Hero", which is "Lofty" taken UpToEleven.

* MultipartEpisode: Every competitive season has one - the premiere in Season 1, episode 5 of Season 2 ([[UpToEleven four parts and a video game]]), and episodes 13-14 of Season 4.

* AllTheWorldsAreAStage: The Final 4 Challenge. It is repeated again for BFB's final 3 challenge.

** The very first episode of Season 3. [[spoiler: Firey is trapped in a cage, Woody is revived somehow, Golf Ball is implied to have a DarkAndTroubledPast tied to the Science Museum, and possibly Evil Leafy (by the way, she is alive again), [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and Rocky regained his barfing powers.]] [[CutShort All this will probably be never explained.]]]]

** Subverted in BFB 20, "A Taste of Space". The Have Cots immediately [[RealityEnsues begin to suffocate]] after Gelatin breaks the plastic wrap windows. Luckily, Four gives them air for the Cake and Stake and this trope is PlayedStraight due to the fact that the Have Cots were able to stand on the surface of the sun itself! Although Lollipop does begin to melt.

** Leafy's voice has arguably changed the most, in BFDI 1, It was very high and feminine, then came BFDI 2, and her voice deepened a lot, sounding more masculine and boyish, then in BFDI 20, her voice got more nasal, like bubble, almost sounding like she has a cold, this voice has remained the same when she appeared in BFDIA, but then in BFB, her voice suddenly got really high again, sounding nothing like how she used to, her voice gotten even higher in BFB 10, almost sounding a lot like her BFDI 1 voice, and then suddenly in BFB 15, her voice got deep again, but this time sounding more masculine than in BFDI, only to get higher again in BFB 17, this time more childish and funny sounding.

* NiceMeanAndInbetween: Of [=FreeSmart=], Bubble and Ruby are nice, Match and Pencil are mean, and Book and Ice Cube are in-between.
** Also applies to the Blocky/Eraser/Pen trio from Season 1 and pre-split 4. Pen is the nice, Blocky is the mean, and Eraser is the in between.
** For the Newbie Alliance Gelatin is nice Lollipop is mean and Teardrop is in between.

* DeusExMachina: In ''BFDIA'' episode 5e, W.O.A.H. Bunch has only walked three miles and is about to lose. [[spoiler:However, Coiny manages to throw a stick 2,760 miles and hits a button on the [=FreeSmart=] [=SuperVan=], which picks up Needle. The rest of the team clings onto her, and they make it to Yoyleland, climb the mountain, and get second place.]] In BFB 8 Saw is the one answering questions for BLEH and she won't stop saying 8 but then one of the questions is what is the past tense of eat so BLEH is safe. In BFB 17 the Have Cots are about to win when they realize they forgot Teardrop so X goes flying into the Have Nots giving them the win. In BFB 23 Teardrop kills Gelatin and 4 happens to hear Gelatin screaming to death and recovers him and the bars happen to be made of cardboard so the Have Cots win.

* NoIndoorVoice: Yellow Face. Whenever he says something, he has to yell it, because sometimes no one can hear him when he speaks normal. -->"HMM... I SURE DO!"

** Spongy kills nearly everyone thanks to the lava apocalypse he created in BFB14, just because his team forgot about him.

* In BFB 18 Flower's merch is used as this for the Have Cots to disguise as Flower and it surprisingly works.

* Several team names are this in BFB and TPOT.

** ''BFDIA'' has the team "[[UnfortunateNames Wheel Ooze a Hole Bunch]]", which is abbreviated to "W.O.A.H. Bunch".

* UnfortunateName:
** Coiny names his team "Wheel Ooze a Hole Bunch", which sounds like "we'll lose a whole bunch." Thankfully their team name is abbreviated to WOAH Bunch, which sounds a lot more reliable.
** In BFB, Firey decides to name his team "The Losers", because it has Loser in it. [[spoiler: When Loser is eliminated, the name's validity significantly drops.]]
** The Have Nots name was given because they lost BFB 18's contest.

* WorldOfFunnyAnimals: Disputed. The stick figures like David and Dora are conflicted on whether they count as human(oid) beings or some kind of craft. And how are the viewers known in the BFDI world?

* DarkerAndEdgier: Several episodes:

** Also, as {{lampshade|Hanging}}d by the Speaker Box, [[spoiler:Flower]] was the first and last contestant to be eliminated.

* DisproportionateRetribution:
** It is considered perfectly normal to slap someone who got your name wrong, or committed some other minor offence.
** Flower kicks Ice Cube just because she didn't think Flower was beautiful.
** Leafy gives Ice Cube a red ball she found to help her in the contest. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a maroon ball, so Ice Cube incurs a penalty. The next episode, Ice Cube lets a ChainOfPeople fall when Leafy calls for help.
** In BFDIA 4, Golf Ball kicks Fries into an incinerator because he called her factory a waste of time. Pencil suffers the same fate moments later, just for calling Golf Ball bossy.
** Puffball takes away Pin's limbs (albeit reluctantly) because she (accidentally) stabbed her speaker box.
* DeadlyDodging: Pin throws a knife at Leafy. Leafy jumps to avoid it, causing it to fly towards the rest of the cast. Everyone else jumps out of the way, and it hits Puffball's speaker box.

** Flower kicks people due to them not liking them in BFB 23

* EasterEgg: In the finale of Season 1, Eraser points out that [[spoiler:the first word of Episode 1, the second word of Episode 2 and so on, put together will form a coherent but somewhat redundant sentence. Season 2 does the same thing, but only the first five words are known.]]

* TitleDrop: Pretty much every episode in season 2 has one with the title of the episode (except for "[[OddNameOut Insectophobe's Nightmare 3]]"). BFB 4 BFB 17 BFB 20 BFB 22 BFB 23 and TPOT 1 all fall under this

* ArmlessBiped: Being the one who started the trend in the first place, BFDI is the very first to have armless characters in an object show, best exemplified by the abundant number of them on the show.[[note]]Avocado, Basketball, Cake, Clapboard, Clock, Discy, Eggy, Fanny, Foldy, Gaty, Golf Ball, Ice Cube, Naily, Nickel, Rocky, Price Tag, Salt Lamp, Snare Drum, Spongy, Tape, Tennis BAll, TV and Winner[[/note]] And this doesn't include the variations such as legless[[note]]Lightning and Shopping Cart[[/note]] and limbless[[note]]8-Ball, Announcer, Bell, Black Hole, Camera, Cloudy, Firey Speaker Box, Pin (For the entirety of BFDIA 5), Puffball, Puffball Speaker Box, Purple Face, Roboty and Yellow Face[[/note]] characters.

* WouldHitAGirl: The characters will slap each other when offended, regardless of gender.
