Wataru's father is obviously a harem protagonist, given that he had thirteen children with beautiful, accomplished women, and he wants Wataru to follow in his footsteps. Wataru, however, is only interested in his studies and his male best friend, which doesn't bode well for a GenerationXerox, especially if Wataru's father suspected the male equivalent of a RomanticTwoGirlFriendship. The whole thing is an elaborate plot to separate Wataru from his small, all-male social circle and surround him with pretty girls in a setting tailor-made for slice-of-life harem-building. Whether or not it works depends on your point of view: Wataru does choose to remain on the island with all of its cute girls, but he doesn't seem to have romantic feelings for any of them (instead caring for them platonically, as his younger sisters) and Akio's now going to be around full-time.

* Given that Akio's plot involves mistreating his sister (''via'' neglect) and pursuing Wataru at everyone else's expense, it seems more likely that ''Wataru'' is some version of Utena-- An inverse reflection, perhaps, a timid/easily-led boy rather than a strong-willed, tomboyish girl. What shakes Akio so badly towards the end is Wataru finally displaying his Utena self, refusing to go along with others and 'be normal' by deciding to return to the island.

It's actually [[EverybodyIsJesusInPurgatory Purgatory]], [[AdventuresInComaLand Coma-Land]], TheMatrix...whatever. At first, Wataru realizes this, hence his CatchPhrase. But by the end, he's so worn down by the MindScrew that he no longer cares. (Plus he's grown to love them all regardless anyway.) Whether this is a good thing or not is, of course, up to the viewer.
