In many ways Eternatus is an EvilCounterpart to Zygarde. Zygarde and Eternatus are [[DraconicAbomination bizarre and otherworldly dragons]] who have "spread themselves" (Zygarde has its cells, while Eternatus has its energy leaking across the Galar region to cause Dynamax Evolution) and who's complete form is a lot stronger than their base form (100% Zygarde and Eternamax Eternatus). However while Zygarde is a protector of nature native to the world, Eternatus is an alien beast akin to radiation. One balances the world, while the other is a force of imbalance. And Zygarde's Ground typing is a contrast/deterrent against Eternatus' Ground typing. The reason why Eternatus fell into a slumber for so long wasn't because it was completely knocked out by its arrival, but because Zygarde fought an already injured Eternatus so it'd fall into a slumber, 20,000 years ago.
Why didn't Zygarde return 3000 years ago to stop Eternatus again? Because it's the same timeframe as the war AZ was part of. As such, Zygarde was distracted dealing with its native region of Kalos, which led to Zacian and Zamazenta having to step in. By the time Eternatus revives in the modern day it's such a brief event that by the time Zygarde could reach Galar the player and the mascot legendaries would've taken care of the problem. The two dragons being rivals would also be fitting given the countries their regions are based off are historically major rivals. Also, if Kalos and Galar are close enough to France and England, they'd be neighboring regions so Zygarde would be the closest dragon to confront Eternatus 20,000 years ago.
