* Season 5 had major plots revolving around Gossip Girl's site developing major security flaws, as well as an explicit absence of the original Gossip Girl, complete with Georgina attempting to take on the mantle. And there is a new Gossip Girl by the end of the series. What's stopping Dan from claiming to have always been Gossip Girl, when instead he just managed to pick up the keys to the estate during one of the many shake-ups in the course of the history of Upper East Side? It at least explains why we have on-screen occasions of him reacting to Gossip Girl blasts while alone in the loft.

** Adding to the evidence, there is a different style to Gossip Girl's narrations in Season Six. Maybe it's just in Kristen Bell's deliveries, but she's got a far more sinister sound to the things that she's saying. Considering how control of Gossip Girl's site was in flux through the second half of the previous season, it's entirely possible that the original Gossip Girl lost control or gave it up and Dan ended up in possession of the security password of the site, merely claiming that was the original.

* Although the show didn't go this way in the end, I think there's a lot to be said for this. All the way back to the first season we can bits which in hindsight can be seen as signs of their conflicted feelings for each other.
